Ceilidh, Cajun, Breton/French in my case.

Stopped playing badminton because it created hip problems after 20 years. Now - problem free and fit (ish).

Agree with the walking thread - fitness regime.

FWIW - two 15 minute brisk walks are better exercise than 30 minutes jogging I am told.

Exercising to music allows you to expend 16% more energy - according to a badminton coach.

Dancing is more fun than "exercise" per se.

So if dancing is so good for you, how come half the dancers I know have torn calf muscles, pulled ligaments and tennis elbow? (The last one you get when you rapper dance... apparently. Sure as hell wasn't through playing tennis!)

I always thought dance was the best exercise (not at all boring) and I danced well into my fifties, but..

first my knee went, then my hip. In fact, most of my joints are exhausted. My doctor calls it mechanical breakdown due to wear and tear.

All things in moderation - dancing included.

People have even been known to drop dead during a ceilidh or in a morris set. Not nice for those around them, but maybe a better way than long months of illness, hospitals etc.

Anyone know of any DVDs of gentle dancing for health? I'd like to do something here at home and would enjoy doing it with a DVD. I've searched google but only found one on googleClick Here, but they won't have a DVD available until later this year.

I have been told by various sources that using a trampoline is easy on the joints when used for gentle bouncing rather than acrobatics.

I should be setting up my new purchase in the garden quite soon, so will be able to report back on the truth of this.

I wore some really good shock absorbing trainers for many years - I am light on shoes and having bought two pairs they lasted a very long time. When I paid lots of money to get a pair resoled it was like walking barefoot on concrete, so paying attention to the quality of your shoes and particularly the resilience of the soles might be something to think of in youth to middle age when one is rather more likely to be doing high impact things.

I bought those trainers just by chance, knowing that I was going to live for ever and never suffer from ill health or old age - just like everyone else in their early 20s.
