I'm looking for the words to a Czech song called "Rybák" (The fisherman). It's a lively song in 6/8 time (seems to switch between 3+3 and 2+2+2) which starts "Já jsem ten rybák" (I am the fisherman), or it might be Slovak: "Já som...". The recording I have is not good, so it's difficult for me to pick out much more than that, except I seem to hear "lodičku" (little boat) and "lovit" (to catch). None of the various search variants I've tried have turned up a ghost of this song.

I know it's a long shot, but can someone help?

I'd also like to find a Moravian song which begins "Horela, horela, hora javorová". I managed to find one mention of this in Google Books, in an index of Czech literature from about 1908, but nothing more of the song.

Maybe the problem is fisherman is rybáø, not rybák :-). Will this help?

"Rybák" must be a regional variation, because they clearly sing it that way, and that is how the title is listed on the (Czech) recording. But I thank you for the lyrics.

The sound "ø" is not known in English nor most of other languages, so there's a possibility you couldn't recognize it. I don't know the "rybák" variation, but there's a possibility I don't know everything too :-).

Having studied Czech, I hope I know all the sounds. ;-}

Here's my attempt at a translation:

THE FISHERMAN

1. I am the fisherman that roams the water.
I am the fisherman, I know the water.
I sit in my boat, I go after a girl;
on the other side I'll get her.

[Chorus]
Brum-ty brum-ty brum-ty, tra lala la, (3x)
tra la la lala la la la la.

2. When they go fishing our lake,
when they go fishing our pond,
I'll go there, too, I'll angle for fish,
I'll catch a pike: slap! right in the bag.

I believe the word "ten" in the first two lines conveys a boastful cast, like "I'm a fisherman, you bet" or "I'm a real fisherman".

The second ending of the chorus (resolving the melody to the tonic) is not how I heard the song sung; many Czech songs, typically sung in two-part harmony, end the melody on mi rather than do, as in the first ending. The entire chorus section may have been an artistic addition, but without it, the song is all too short.
