As usual, the management are extremely tardy with their publicity.

It's almost as if they don't want people to go.

Sadly, Ron has had to pull out of the Seafest gig, for family reasons, so it will not be 2BS&S as such, Martin and I will be there along with two mates Damian and Frank who perform as "Diad", odly they tend to be drafted in when I am missing! However we have put a couple of rousing sets together ( last tuesday!) but as Frank, Martin and Damian are excellent musicians it will not be all a capella there will be combinations of fiddle, banjo, concertina and guitar in there as well. Frank and Damian are back in York wednesday and have left armed with all the words they have to learn! Having said that we will be rolling out some old standards that we expect to get a good chorus to and let everyone hear our take on Charleys "Ratcliffe Highway" along with Barry's version of "Priest and Nuns" BTW, Barry, we are not so pious over here, or maybe less nieve, and don't find it either unerverving nor surprising to have religeon on both ends of the pump handles! (another thread!).

Subject: MAYDAY TUGS OF WAR at Scarborough seafest
From: GUEST,Jim Radford
Date: 19 Jul 08 - 02:39 PM

MAYDAY - TUGS OF WAR showing at 2pm Sunday 20 July in Sea Cadets' Hall

This award-winning documentary film not only has a couple of great songs (including one about my first trip to sea in 1944 which won the SeaFest Song for the Sea competition last year) but tells the story of the wartime Rescue Tugs and the ships and men who saved thousands of lives and millions of tons of shipping during WWII, as well as building the Mulberry Harbours in Normandy. Anyone with an interest in maritime history should come along at 2.00pm on Sunday to see it.

From: GUEST,Jolie Rouge

Jim is right. The film is well worth seeing for anyone who likes maritime history or sea songs. It meanders a bit over a big topic but some of the archive film footage of sinking ships, rescues in heavy seas and Mulberry Harbour Caissons under tow to Normandy is truly spectacular, Best of all though are the interviews with Rescue Tug Veterans (including many Yorkshiremen) who tell their own dramatic stories in plain and unvarnished language. Jim's two songs (including the one that won last year's Song for the Sea competition at Scarborough) are also worth hearing. They turned the soundtrack off and Jim sang the SHORES OF NORMANDY live at the film screening I saw in Hull last month.

To hear a few verses of Jim's song and to get a flavour of the film you can go to http://www.maydaytugsofwar.com/trailers/

Martin, Damian Frank and I had to returned early from the Seafest as the driver, Frank, had a plane to Washington DC to catch at 11pm Saturday night ( the rest of us, being married, had our vehicles sequestrated by our wives!) First set on "The Grand Turk" was ok in spite of a drizzle , we were kept dry by a nifty taurpaulin. The second set started in glorious sunshine, but, well, Barry, I am not a God botherer but as I launched into Priest & Nuns we were swept by horizontal rain like a continuous broadside of grapeshot. we were beckoned to the fo'castle by the crew but the hell I was going to finish the song, without pause or interuption I donned my waterproofs whilst singing and finished! We carried on below decks to an audience of crew, dummies and a couple of kids, but we did it. Big regret was because of Frank's tight schedule we couldn't catch up with anyone else but having said that it was good that he and Damian stepped in at such short notice to cover for Ron who had to miss the trip
For info our sets were as follows.
song

Set 1

Trumpet Hornpipe
Sailor Lad
South Australia
Leave her Johnny/One More Day
Blow Boys Blow
Grey Funnel Line
New York Girls
Ratcliffe Highway
Drunken Sailor
Dogger Bank

Set 2

Sailors Hornpipe
Jolly Grog
Priest and Nuns
Banks of Newfoundland
Spanish ladies
Home boys home (Who wouldn't be a sailor.......)
Stormy Weather
Mingaulay Boat Song
Paddy West
The Crawl

plus my "impressions" of Barry and Charley which are now a feature of our intro's and my compatriots asure me are quite accurate!

And so this was the debut of "The Hamster Wheel Shanty Band"!

Peter, I didn't know you spoke Bostonian with such a thick accent, wish I could've heard it but we were catching some of the thunder here too, & to top it off the wind was drowning you out. Hopefully we'll hear you soon, sorry to have missed another soggy outing.

All my best

Sorry we missed you Pete.....but we worked hard and had a great time.

7 sets in 2 days + the song contest and various impromptus certainly tests the voices and fingers but it went really well. Generally had time to catch up with the previous and next artists at the various venues so saw a bit of most people......it was good to meet Mudcat's own Dick Miles amongst others. Mainly dodged the rain though.....

Well done to Richard Grainger for pulling together another great event.

I was taught by my sister in-law who lived and worked in cambridge, worcester and around for twenty years or more, plus a narldy old woman from Boston who was living in hastings UK she tought me to say B-arse-ton! Still Barry I think it is more your comment " Nice song but can't think of what work you could do to it" with a Boston/ Yorkshire accent that actually gets the laugh. Forgive me if it is a miss quote but it was along those lines as I recall! As for P & W you certainly did your stint, perhaps next year we can get in a bit sooner, with the three of us and get to do a bit more. Also it might be better if a "Fringe" were to develop, having said that it seems to be always raining so camping wouldn't be fun. As for the drowning out noise wise we had more trouble from the posers reving motor bikes but hey ho it's a free world.
And I endorse Pauls comment, well done Richard and thanks

Pete

.....I forgot to say, the Scarborough Seafest "Song For The Sea" competion was won by the Mrs (Wendy Arrowsmith) with Sleep Well 'til Morning" , a wee traditional style unaccompanied lullaby thing.

Have a look if you like and let her know what you think.

Paul

yes,Wendys song is very good.
I thought the festival was a success, the weather was ok,only a couple of showers, and all the performances that I saw on the main stage were good.Well done Richard and Jeanette and all the production crew.
the two folk clubs[Whitby and Stockton] that I did were very good,so all in all I had a great time[apart from car problems getting to and from Cork airport]Dick Miles.

Had a great time, too, although it would have been better had I had a voice after Friday night! Still hasn't returned, so I'm ordered to be completely silent for the moment - it's not easy, but Tom's still enjoying it!

Wish we'd had a chance to hear more people, but thoroughly enjoyed those we did hear - there really are some great singers at Seafest, aren't there? I have to echo others reactions to wendy's song - beautiful, and beautifully sung, too.

Really looking forward to next year, as are certainly the staff at the Leeds Arms and Hotel. Isn't it great to walk into a pub after a year's absence, and they know what drink you're going to have before you ask for it?

Barbara
