My mate plays fiddle in a local duo. They were delighted to be asked by the organiser of a concert to be the support for Spiers and Boden. Their joy was short-lived - apparently S&B would not appear with another duo which had a fiddle player. So much for the spirit of folk music, lads......

I had Tom Kitching and Gren Bartley opening the first concert of Loughborough Folk Festival 2006. Also on the bill were Spiers and Boden. There were no complaints.

Just saying.

Perhaps they though there was too much similarity? As much as I love S&B I'd probably avoid a support act that were too similar.

Please note that this is GUEST,bfc's only post to Mudcat. I would suggest a little caution before leaping to any judgements.

Not knowing any of the particulars, if it even happened at all, but my guess would be similar to Dazbo's.

What IS the Snail implying? Does it matter if it's the first or fifty-first post?

Possibly the implication was to be wary of a pseudonymous vistor whose first post is a leeeeetle bit tendentious?

"I had Tom Kitching and Gren Bartley opening the first concert of Loughborough Folk Festival 2006. Also on the bill were Spiers and Boden. There were no complaints."

Tom's an excellent player too, so I can't see some sort of professional jealousy as the problem.

Thoughtful of Mr TheSnail to warn us about pseudonymous posters. I hadn't realised they were persona non grata at Mudcat.

As someone who has booked acts, on and off for over ten yrs I wouldnt book a similar support act to the main act- not fair on either artist IMHO or the audiance for that matter.

That, I, think is pretty straight forward.

PS possible exeption themed night ie fiddles on fire or melodeons in meltdown, bodhrons on a bonfire or banjos on a barbecue

NB the last two are not a themed musical evening suggestion just a suggestion

Just because there are two duos which include fiddle, that's not to say they acts are similar. My earlier example is a good case in point: Tom on fiddle, Gren on guitar, very mellow vocals, a lot of American material. Very different from what Spiers and Boden do. Which is why I was happy to include them on a concert bill which also included Coope Boyes and Simpson and Seth Lakeman.

Seth plays the fiddle too. Still no one complained. :)

Troll nonsense.

These threads would stink less of bullshit if the originators had the bollocks to be explicit about the point they were trying (and failing) to make, rather than talking in riddles.

Yes, Guest bfc. That's a challenge.

Just a chav swiping pointlessly at tall poppies.
And with Spiers & Boden, I do mean TALL.
And as if they would ever refuse to play with anybody (except the BNP obviously).
They'll play with anybody, anywhere, just for the joy of it.

Hi bfc,

I can confirm what other people here have guessed which is that we have no such policy - and have not been asked in the past 6 months about the support we have at any particular gig. We don't book our own supports as we can't afford to pay enough for someone to come out on the road with us apart from our sound man - if we have a support then it is nearly always the decision of the venues or promoters that book us.

If you would be kind enough to let me know the venue and date that you reckon this occurred then I'll look in to it and if it turns out that the venue has said this on our behalf then I'll speak to the promoter personally about this.

Maybe you'd have the decency to post the reply here once you've got all the facts straight - then this thread might not look like the mudslinging that it looks like to me at the moment. Next time you only have to email me - my address is easily findable on the web.

Cheers

John Spiers

I knew this was apocryphal when I read it.

John - sadly this forum seems to have more than its' fair share of wind-up merchants and mud slingers.
