Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: Ferrara Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:16 PM When the Shellbacks came to the Getaway in '05 I wanted to include some of them in the program, so I PM'd the Shellbacks who were Mudcatters by that time, and asked for suggestions. Needless to say, a frequent comment was, "... and you want Theresa Tooley for Chorus Songs." Theresa, what I remember most is your big smile in the late night singing and the joy of looking straight at each other as we sang and just grinning with pleasure at the richness of the sound. Your voice was the underlying support for such wonderful choruses there in the Ramblewood dining hall. We've missed you since then. This is very difficult news, Theresa. We will be thinking of you and hoping for the best outcomes possible. If hugs could heal it, you'd be in prime shape in no time. Rita F |
Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: folk1e Date: 05 Sep 08 - 04:43 PM Pete Ryder tells a story about Theresa ........ " I had been persuaded by Geof Pickles to do Cleckheaton and was really "cacking it * " as I had not been performing for some time. I was sat on stage in the Town Hall, not a seat to be had and I looked up and saw Theresa dancing in the isle. She was singing all the words (even the ones I made up before going on stage) and I just knew it was going to be all right ...... and it was!" I think Theresa is a bit like Koll Kemp ...... they both would be pleasantly surprised by the esteem they are held in, by so many. * Cacking it ....... a northern term equating to being "a bit worried about" something |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: GUEST,Rattler Date: 05 Sep 08 - 06:17 PM Apart from many fond memories of late night sings in the Moor & Coast tent, the Bansley YMCA, the Redcar Rugby Club changing rooms and dozens more, I heard Bella Hardy, one of the best of the new generation of singers, say in a radio interview that one of her influences was "the late sing at Stainsby Festival with Theresa Tooley". There's no greater compliment in the folk world than having carried the tradition to the next generation. Richard. |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Sep 08 - 12:03 AM Hi Kat Teresa's the short one on the left pointing at Sussex Carole on the right. Mary's that's not me, I don't even know that man & I don't know what he's doing either (& I'm not venturing a guess) but I do know that's my wife in the foreground smiling up at Theresa. Theresa could make a bronze bell rattle & shake & have a lamb go to slaughter laughing. Speaking of being with her on stage. At the Getaway someone (Jeri??) asked me to do "Won't You Help Me To Raise Them" a Manhaden net hauling shanty, so I did it with Ken Schatz (cause Ken & I weren't sure who Jeri was asking), Theresa came right in as back up, what back up, it went so well that the 3 of us did it later that night in concert. She must've thought that I need a little lifting cause in front of the world she gave me the biggest pinch on the arse I'd ever received, enough to cause me to leap in the air & hit harmony notes that I never been able to reach since. She sure can bring up/out the best in people. I sure miss you Theresa, come back over when you've rested up! Barry |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: KT Date: 06 Sep 08 - 04:22 AM My time with Theresa was also at Getaway 05, and I too, was wowed by her voice and her spirit, both of which were huge and wonderful. Theresa, may all of the joy you have shared with others, through your gift of song, come back to you tenfold, now, and lift your spirits and your health. Sending loving and healing thoughts out there for you. KT |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: Bigh Date: 06 Sep 08 - 10:53 AM Having only just found and registered on mudcat today, I'm shattered to read of Teresa's cruel illness. She occupies a very special place in my heart since I first met her at Gill Turner's farmhouse folksong weekend in remote Middleton,Suffolk. Her perfect delivery of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den' - and many more are fortunately on a tape somewhere in my possession. At Saddleworth festival two years ago I was honoured to have her beside this mere floorsinger, harmonising as a duo,as I made my best efforts delivering Dave webber's 'Lady of Autumnn'. There's no justice in this world when a great lady as Theresa is handed out medical punishment as damning Progressive Bulbar Palsey. Wishing you strength, energy and everything you wish for yourself,in the months and years ahead. Love to you. Harold Nield |
Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: GUEST,Surreysinger Date: 06 Sep 08 - 10:57 AM Oh this is so NOT the news that I wanted to hear. Marian Button and I were only talking about Theresa a couple of weeks ago in Whitby, and had been hoping we might see her there. It was a joy to meet up with her every year at the National Festival and elsewhere... we'd formed a nice friendly little group of ex-winners of the Singing Competition ... Theresa, Moe Keast, me, and Marian ... and I always look forward to seeing her each year. Theresa, if you read this, I'll be letting Marian know, and will be sending you an email as soon as my laptop is back up and running. Thinking about you... and sending you all the best of course. Love Irene xxx |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: karen k Date: 06 Sep 08 - 03:10 PM This news brings tears to my eyes. Have been away from Mudcat for a few days so I'm just seeing this. I've never heard of Progressive Bulbar Palsy. I'm devastated that she will lose her ability to sing. My god, what a loss. Such an amazing voice. I first met Theresa in 2003 when she came with the Shellbacks to the Getaway. I was lucky to be at the gathering at Jerry and Ruth Rasmussen's and before that at a party at Judy Cook's in Maryland. In 2004 I was in England at the invitation of several Shellbacks and got to spend more time with her. The last time I saw her was the 2005 Getaway which has already been much mentioned here. I did not even know that Theresa had been ill. Theresa, if you read this please know that I am thinking of you. I hope with all my heart that you will get the better of this. I would hate to see such a great voice silenced. I have been in awe of you and your voice and this news saddens me. Be well my friend. Much love, karen kobela, connecticut |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: muppitz Date: 07 Sep 08 - 07:23 AM The worst things seem to happen to the best people, it's just not fitting. I have been bumping into Theresa in various singarounds at various festivals for as long as I've been coherant, for me she is folk's national institution. I echo the comment from above, I hope that if she's eventually going to lose the ability to sing that eventually is a long long time away. muppitz x |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: Tinker Date: 08 Sep 08 - 08:07 AM Just finding this today. I was looking at some 2005 Getaway tape not long ago and this is one lady who does not hide her light. If the voice goes it'll just have to find another way to shine on the rest of us.... I was privledged to have several Shellbacks stay with us on their rambles and she deliberately left a sleeping bag behind for future rambles and (and on going use) The teens in and out of my house have gotten much use ..... Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: SINSULL Date: 09 Sep 08 - 06:47 PM A plan: Carole and I spoke. She is sure Theresa does not want a singing, dancing 4' Maine lobster but thought she might enjoy a card from a friend. I have a pretty Guest Book with lined pages. I plan to have it out the John Robert's Concert on Saturday for all to sign and leave good wishes, a song, a complaint, whatever. It will attend the Portsmouth Festival and the Getaway and then go back to the UK to be delivered to Theresa. Sort of a mini-Mudcat Guitar. So if you would like to participate, look me or Carole up. If you would like to include a card or photo, drawing, whatever might please her, make plans now.If you can not meet up with book and would like to send a note, card, photo, etc contact one of us for a snail mail address. And spread the word. Mary |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: George Papavgeris Date: 10 Sep 08 - 10:38 AM The toughest tasks seem to fall on the broadest shoulders. Teresa is an indomitable lady indeed, and her spirit gave courage to many of us over the years. We owe it to her to lend some of that courage back, should she need it. She laughed in the face of adversity before, I hope she can do it again. But in between the tough talk, a cuddle from me and Nessie. |

Subject: RE: Theresa Tooley aka treaties1 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 11 Sep 08 - 02:55 PM Great good wishes from North Carolina, Theresa. I can still hear your voice from the Shellbacks' visit to the Getaway! I so enjoyed singing in any group you were a part of. You're one of those people with little sparks flying off them, so full of life that people are drawn to you so they can get some. Harder than for most to accept help, I imagine : ) but I hope that you are able to bask in some of the love surrounding you. Joy prevails.... Dani |
