Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 16 Mar 09 - 10:40 AM I'll be filling out a bracket today. I don't believe I'll be picking VCU to win in the first round. "Why?" you ask. 1) In Los Angeles no team named the Rams is looked upon favorably since the professional ones deserted for St. Louis. 2) UCLA is my Alma Mommy, albeit they didn't win their first championship until the season immediately following my graduation. Go BRUINS!!!!!! While these may not be my final picks, I lean toward UCLA beating VCU, Villanova, Duke, Florida State, Oklahoma and Connecticut, thereby hanging a 12th banner in Pauley Pavilion. Of course, no money goes with this dream scenario. |

Atlanta Hawks, Carlotte Bobcats, New Orleans Loosers, Memephis Minnies, etc..." Hey now! Better take that back about the resurgent New Orleans Hornets! (Those guys in Atlanta are another young up-and-coming NBA squad, too, for that matter ~ much as I hate to say anything nice about any Atlanta team!) I've followed college hoops less this season than I have in many years. The Hornets have claimed most of my sports-TV attention, plus which my alma mater has had a pretty disappointing season... I'll still be filling out a bracket. I'm as likely to get lucky during a year when I have very little actual knowledge of the teams as in any other year ~ after the usual bunch of 1st-and-2d-round upsets, it all comes down to dumb luck anyway! |

Their basketball program is coming right along, and they were quite competitive in the Big East this year. From the ACC, Clemson is out. I'm not much of a fan, but they have done well this year and I'm sorry for them that they were edged by Michigan. Ty Lawson's big toe worries me. Roy Williams is going to hold him out as long as possible, but if he has to play to insure UNC wins before the Elite 8, there is no way he can be at 100% down the home stretch. UNC is very, very good, without him. But they are going to have to be much better than very, very good. This southerner loves college basketball and college lacrosse, but has never, ever had any interest in any pro sports, basketball included. Just when I thought (several times) that UCLA was putting the game away, back came your Rams. The game ended as all good games should, the last possession was for all the marbles. Sanders, when he gets his body under control, is going to be a great big-man...he reminds me of Venus Williams in her first year on the tennis tour with her uncontrolled talent. The same one that beat Duke in the NCAA's 2 years ago and the one that just before the end of the 1st half or end of the game he'll sink 75% of the time... Watch for Maynor in the pros... BTW, there was a very sad story in the Washington Post todat written by Michael Wilbon and he says that that VCU's coach, Anthony Grant, is so hot a property that VCU will not be able to keep him another year... Tough being a minor-major... Hard to recruit the big time players and hard to keep coaches or players that shine... That really sucks... Imean, how does a school ever move up when they get raided by the big boys and can't recruit on a level playing field... VCU is a state college and ain't no way that a state college is gonna be able to dangle the big bucks to finance a big bucks program... I hope, fir yer sake, that UCLA stays an elite program 'casue it ain't easy in the NCAA's if you ain't from one of the elites... Maryland's coach, BTW, refuses to pay the dough to the summer leagues that is required to get the top talent... He recruits the old fashion way... Probably dumb but he's got his principles... Some of their players have probably been on the dool since the 9th grade... Can I offer proof... No, not yet... Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 21 Mar 09 - 11:09 PM Bobertz, luv, them's fightin' words! UNC is real, real good. But so are a bunch of teams - some of whom have gotten beat already. The level of college play across the board is phenomenal - as is the money generated by college football and basketball. These UNC kids are as talented as anyone, and sure, they all be dreamin' of the NBA, but UNC also has a heck of a record for their players graduating, even if they come back after going to the NBA to finish. their degrees. Both Duke and UNC have significant retention rates -probably close to the best, if not the best - for these guys finishing college before heading to pro ball. I don't know about the rest of the ACC, but at Duke, Carolina, and Wake, these young men (and women on the women's teams), the academic requirements are still in place, and they are not given a free pass. I know money talks and BS walks. The tradition and the level of play on Tobacco Road has certainly led to a bunch of money. Money definitely buys talent. But at the good schools that also have good basketball teams, those players also have bonafide academic expectations. I am assuming the same is true for other colleges with rigorous academic standards that also field good sports teams. - No matter how good you are at athletics at these schools, you also need the brains and motivation to pass your classes. The profs, protective of the academic reputation of the school, are not simply going to give these guys a decent grade if they haven't earned it. What is exciting to me is that schools like WV and VCU, where they don't have big budgets and huge basketball traditions - still field teams that on any given night, is capable of beating the demonstratebly best teams in the nation. That is why I like college basketball. Go Heels! Go Duke! |

Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Bobert Date: 22 Mar 09 - 08:58 PM No, Janie... There's a reason why NC is good... There's a reason why UCon is so good... There's a dirty little secret about how kids get recruited and where they end up going to college that has alot to do with money... And lots of it... But nevermind that story... Hey, other than the CAA, the ACC is my conference... Okay, I tend to be a Maryland fan but when it comes down to final 4, if UNC is the only ACC team left (which I think is allready the scenerio) then, yeah, I'll root for UNC... Heck, the P-Vine is a Carolina gal, right??? And so are you, right??? Go Tar Heels!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 22 Mar 09 - 09:32 PM Well sure, Beaubear. Big Time college sports is about big time money. It's still fun. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: PoppaGator Date: 23 Mar 09 - 03:45 PM Haven't checked into this thread for a while. I had picked VCU on my bracket in Bobert's recommendation; I don't feel too bad about it, since they put up such a good showing. My own school didn't make the tournament this year (and even got an early boot out of the NIT), so I'm free to root for all the underdogs in the NCAA. I was glad to see Cleveland State make it to the second round, for instance. The superstar recruiting by the big rich schools has become a sort of double-edged sword since so many of the best players leave early for the NBA ~ even moreso now that the pros no longer will take kids straight from high school. The big-budget colleges compete for those gigantic kids with well-honed skills only to see them wave goodbye after a single season. I think this leads to "parity," since a smaller ("mid-major") college program can sign some of the almost-that-good players, coach them well while they're still under the pro scouts' radar, and keep them in the program for a full four years, developing all the while. A team like that, with a full complement of junior and senior starters, can do very well against a big-name school with big-name freshman and sophomore players who will bolt for the NBA early, based upon their "upsides." As for my NBA Hornets ~ all I can say is wait and see how they do in the playoffs. They're probably an even better team than they were last year, if all the guys can get and stay healthy for the postseason. Their current record is only 4 games worse than at the same time last year, but they have lost FAR more player-games to injury this year than last. They can beat and have beaten the Celtics and Lakers, although they lost both meetings with Cleveland this year. With luck (on the injury front), and with continued improvement on the part of the "role-players" (especially the phenomenally athletic Julian Wright), the sky's the limit. Chris Paul, by the way, is not getting as much MVP "buzz" now as he did last year, but ALL of his individual stats are improved, and he is still at least as criticallly valuable to his team as he was last season, and as anyone is to any team. The guy is an absolute magician with the ball; I've never seen anything like it since Bob Cousy. Of course, Cooz didn't have to play above the rim back in the 50s-to-early-60s, and he could still get away with a set shot in lieu of a jumper. Chris, supposedly 6 feet tall but probably no taller than 5'10/11" in real life, is right at home among all those huge opponents, outrunning, out-quicking, and even outjumping them (6 rebounds/game). Those of you who haven't had many chances to see him on TV in the regular season are in for a treat if you keep an eye on the Hornets in the playoffs. |

Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 24 Mar 09 - 01:05 AM *sob* Purdue just knocked off the Carolina Women's team. You know, I have never been able to attend one of the Men's games, but have been to a few of the Women's college games for Carolina or Duke. (Tickets are cheaper and much easier to come by.) Every bit as exciting and explosive as the men's games. College sports at it's best. Top notch athletes, and if the money game bothers you, it is not nearly as much of a factor in Women's sports. (Women's lacrosse is especially exciting-no pads, no "cups". Not only are they superb athletes, the way women's lacrosse is played, the athletic finesse is incredible.) |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 24 Mar 09 - 08:32 PM Janie Could you manage to wear this? That's one mean looking Cardinal. Back in the late 60s when I was there, we had a more sophisticated bird with a white tux and tails and he didn't look nearly as pissed off. In fact, he had a girlfriend who had a very attractive smock she wore to the games. Maybe that's why he was more well adjusted in those days. Now he's single, naked, and looks like he's been on human growth hormone. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 24 Mar 09 - 09:04 PM I remember those days - back when there was such a thing as good sportsmanship expected from spectators? |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Ref Date: 25 Mar 09 - 06:22 PM OT, Janie, but I gotta point out that women's lacrosse is quite a dangerous game for the players these days. Girls coming up are learning the game playing with boys, in pads and face-masked helmets. While I see the point of keeping some of the physical play limited, they need to go, at least, to the helmets and full face guards. I agree that lacrosse, generally, is a great game for players and spectators! |

The rec. leagues allowed girls to play, but they were learning men's lacrosse, not women's lacrosse. |

Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 28 Mar 09 - 02:36 AM Yep, John, you picked the winner right on the OU game. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: maire-aine Date: 29 Mar 09 - 07:07 PM Great news for Spartan fans-- MSU beat Louisville to make it into the Final Four. Since Detroit is the host city for the Final Four, we're all very excited here. Go Spartans!!! Maryanne |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 29 Mar 09 - 07:21 PM WoooHooo! Go 'Heels! Hope they get past Villinova. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 29 Mar 09 - 07:23 PM &%$#@! the Spartans! Well, the Cardinals are out. Pitt is out. I just hope somebody beats the *%@?% Tarheels so I don't have to wear a ?>*$% baby blue hat to the Getaway. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 29 Mar 09 - 10:04 PM Oh well (sigh), I've still got UConn. Glad no $$$ were involed in my picks. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Rapparee Date: 29 Mar 09 - 10:25 PM Do you have any IDEA how hard it is to stay asleep when the person you're sleeping with reads in the paper that her grad school (rhymes with Villanova) is in the semifinals? And it's all Bobert's fault. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 29 Mar 09 - 11:12 PM I was in Durham waiting for my son who was in an Arnis class for the 1st half of the Carolina/Oklahoma game, so went to a sports bar to watch it. Being in Durham, the bar was mostly inhabited by Duke fans cheering mightily for Oklahoma. |

Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 04 Apr 09 - 03:53 PM Showoff -- hahahaha UConn is the wonn! |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 04 Apr 09 - 04:19 PM Figuring out how to do that was a great excuse to not open up Turbotax this morning;^) |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Bobert Date: 04 Apr 09 - 08:38 PM Well, well, well... Looks as if one of the dark colored jerseys has won... Go Michigan State!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 04 Apr 09 - 08:56 PM That was a good ball game! I didn't expect Michigan State to dominate it to the extent they did. Carolina game about to start. Time to go start chewing on my nails. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 04 Apr 09 - 08:58 PM Stick a fork in me...you'll find I'm donn. If basketball continues on its current path, I expect roundballers to be wearing pads in a few years. There was more contact in that game--in fact many games--than the sport was meant to have. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 04 Apr 09 - 09:32 PM I have to agree with you, John. Read an article recently that there is a lot more contact and roughness in college ball than pro-ball. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: GUEST,Dani Date: 04 Apr 09 - 11:38 PM Well, there goes THOSE plans for Monday night. Can't wait for this game! Dani |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: maire-aine Date: 04 Apr 09 - 11:44 PM Well, MSU is going to play UNC. Go Green! Go White! Maryanne |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 04 Apr 09 - 11:46 PM On to the Final! If you watched the game, you know that Villanova made Carolina work hard. LEJ, you notice that Big Mick didn't have enough courage to come back once I entered the fray with the Tarheels. Not sure if it was the fear factor, or shame at not backing his home boys from the outset :O) Hope to see you in that lovely baby blue in October. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Bobert Date: 05 Apr 09 - 08:20 AM Well, well, well... Rootin' against NC is one of my most beloved hobbies with rooting for the underdog a close second so bring Monday night on!!! Go dark jersies!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: GUEST,Dani Date: 05 Apr 09 - 09:35 AM Yeah, where IS Mick? There is wagering in the air... Want to raise the stakes: coffee and breakfast served 'en cabine' @ Getaway? Do you think your boys are ready for some North Carolina basketball?! Even I have to have some grudging respect for them for putting down our beloved Duke boys. Dani |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 06 Apr 09 - 07:13 PM Tonight's the night.... |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 06 Apr 09 - 07:13 PM Oh! 100! |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 06 Apr 09 - 07:42 PM I'm not sure if Mick feels like he was committed to the bet beyond Pitt and Louisville. I was the one who goaded Janie into jumping in, thinking she AND Mick would end up with a red hat. Looks like I could easily end up with a blue one, though, and I'm committed. so....GO SPARTANS! |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: GUEST,Dani Date: 06 Apr 09 - 07:46 PM Here I go, making assumptions again. Sorry, Mick! But someone's got to root for those poor boys! Dani |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 06 Apr 09 - 08:44 PM Naw - Mick's just chicken! |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Janie Date: 06 Apr 09 - 08:57 PM And Dani - whaddaya mean, those poor boys! MSU is flat out playing great basketball, and they are going to have a huge crowd cheering them on tonight. I hope both teams play well, and that the finish has us all on the edge of our seats. Go Heels! |

Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Tinker Date: 07 Apr 09 - 02:18 PM Hey Janie, maybe I'll throw in some Carolina Blue Cryin' Towels for the boys... or hmmmmmm tink |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: PoppaGator Date: 07 Apr 09 - 02:38 PM I'm amused that, after the tournament is all over, the title of this htread remains uncorrected! (It's NCAA! Nat'l Collegiate Athletic Assn) |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Big Mick Date: 07 Apr 09 - 02:46 PM Ya think? |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: John on the Sunset Coast Date: 07 Apr 09 - 05:02 PM Actually I think the initials quite apt. Nazi-like Control of College Athletics. |
Subject: RE: BS: NCCAs... From: Bobert Date: 07 Apr 09 - 06:28 PM I'm with John on this one... The entire college athletics is corrupt as it can be... I say, just quit the wink, wink stuff that goes on and pay the kids to play over the table rather than under the table... Face it, most of these kids ain't exactly college amterial and are there for one reason... 'Cause they can play ball... Pick a ball. Don't much matter... Just pay 'um and quit all the BS lies about how things really work... I mean, you got these kids drivin' around in $50K cars... Where'd they get them??? Working at the college bookstore for 7 bucks an hour??? The worst part about the current corrupt system is that some schools are better off financially and can buy the best players... NC has always been able to buy the very best high school kids... I think that colleges should have salary caps for their players... That way my alma matta, VCU, would have the same amount of money allowed to pay its players as NC or UCon... Then kids would go where they wanted to go... I mean, the playin' field has been tilted toward about 20 Division 1 schools going back decades... Time to clean it up... Go Bullets!!! B~ |
