I am headed to bed now at 11:25 PM, only to rise at 4:00 AM, to be in the TV studio at 4:45 AM, and then we will stop at about 1:30 some 21 hours later.

I called my daughter this evening to remind her to put green on The Grandson, Morgan, as he has preschool tomorrow. She told me they got him a new t-shirt, green, which says, (I got it wrong, will correct it in the morning when I can call her to ask!) "I'm not lucky, I'm good!" When I reminded her her granddad (my dad) would also want him to wear a bit of orange, her husband, a "Kilgore" told me his red hair would suffice!

It will be a fun day, even though there's not much going on here.

Happy St. Patrick's Day. (This is the one day of the year my dad and I always knew we would speak on the phone, no matter what had been going on in our lives. Still seems weird not to call him.)

I'm going to Wareham for a meal with friends, hosting a Saint Patrick's party there. To me Saint Patrick's Day is Miss Mayne's Ceilidh, such happy memories!

Any of you that ever came to Wimborne may remember them.

May the good man turn the stone over today.

Now just resting up in preparation for what will be my thirty third consecutive St. Patrick's Day show at the Press Room. I'll be joined by old friend and banjo player Bob Frost, who's been with me for 32 of these, and Bat Goddess, Linn who started being part of the show a few years back. We're also looking forward to special guests Jeff Warner, and maybe Barbara Benn.

I cannot imagine the quantity of beer that has been poured and consumed over these years; gigagallons? In the early years, there was a manager who would open at 7:00AM to awaiting throngs. One year the taps went dry and the owner had to go around the corner and buy up all the bottled beer at the market. And I think that the Press Room still holds the state record for the quantity of Guinness served.

We'll be starting tonight around eight, or maybe seven; we'll do three sets or maybe more. And we'll stop when the owner decides that enough drink has been poured.

In any case we're looking forward to a pleasant evening of good music and good cheer with very moderate tippling (in NH, musicians can't drink on stage) and a good time will be had by all - Tom

I,d like to wish the Irish a good St Patricks day. It seems from the pubs I.ve visited that it is a sin to celebrate it. No evidence that it exists. I have always tried to celebtrate any of the days given. I do not mind Scot Irish Welsh or English. They are a tradition that should be remembered. Allow political interference or thinking, they will be lost. Its not the people that commit the wrongs it is the politicians and criminals of this world. Do not allow them to segregate you. Celebrate your Saints.

Darn it, Mick!:-) I was doing really well, today. Put on the Conklin Ceilidh Band CD and watched as Morgan sang along and danced. Then he went off to school. His parents were so good about remembering a bit of orange in memory of my dad. Now, I am alone for the afternoon, have your CD on, again, and just got hit by a huge longing for my dad and the special phone call we always had on this day. You are singing a sad song, so I guess that's partly why tears are rolling down my cheeks, missing "me da."

Me too kat. I can still hear the old guitar, fiddle, whistle, spoons.... the wood stove laden with pots of stew... beans and fresh bread baking... Gramma watching Gramps like a hawk to TRY to keep him away from a sip... realtives and neighbours coming and going.

But, I have an odd feeling just now. I cannot remember a single St. Pat's in those days when it wasn't cold and windy with snow or rain or both. Today, at nearly 5PM, we have glorious warm sunshine, no wind, about 5C. As I sit here, remembering those kitchen parties, I almost hate the nice weather.

It is sort of sad here..I don't have a single thing to do to celebrate..but the good news is I would rather be alone than try to explain it to non-Irish Americans and that includes For Real Irish Persons. I have given up doing anything with Non-IAs. Any other day of the year, fine. And at least I was spared hearing the lovely St. Patrick's Day songs put down and ridiculed. mg

mg, same here. Stayed home to avoid people asking me when St. Patrick's day is. No celebration today, just hung the tricolor, and a bit of Bailey's this evening. There will be a great ceili and pseudo-parade on the weekend, so we'll just celebrate then.

However, the day was its own reward. Brilliant sun, everything suddenly has gone green with spring. And a few shamrocks survived. Silent toasts and remembrances of laughing pink-cheeked storytelling relatives now gone, and Dad's always having green carnations for us girls. With all the recent gloom and worry, we are given another year, another spring, another flower, another song.

I miss the days with friends. We used to always start by going to Mass. Now it starts for me in a TV studio at 4:30 AM. Used to be we would then enjoy a fine breakfast among friends..... now I end up eating catered eggs, hash,.. blah blah .... at a corporate event. Then another. Later in the daywe used to find a corner of a pub and play and sing for whoever wanted to listen. Now the we head off for the loony time, when we play the pubs full of drunk folks wearing wierd clothes and drinking green beer, until we collapse in our own beds at half 2 the next morning, our pockets full of money, but our hearts emptied of the joy of a day to just reflect and celebrate.

The one thing we have refused to give up in the pursuit of the dollar is when we play for the kids at St. Patrick's School, Parnell, MI, USA. We go there, the kids, ranging from 5 years old to 15 years old, and we play them the happy music of our people, they all get up and dance merrily around the gym, some dancing the proper steps, others just with the joy of being young, allowed to move, and listening to the reels and jigs and letting the joyful noise infect their precious souls. We tell of the history of the place they are in, and how a people came there. This year a neighbor brought over their Wolfhound whose name is Tiernan. I told the kids about Bran, and Aibe, and Gelert, and how young Setanta became Cuchullain. We have many paid gigs during the leadup to St. Pat's and the celebration of the day. But I and my bandmates refuse to give up this one. It may not pay in coin of the realm, but it certainly pays much better than anything we do.

So the exercise in Hibernian self flagellation is over for another year.

I miss the old days........

Mick

happy St. Pats day to all my friend. I only wish my kids were little again and still here so I could have helped them make their Leprechaun traps like we did when they were small. I use to put a little green sock or a hat and a tiny note that read "better luck next time" next to their candy ..

They would get pretty clever, a trap door in a shoe box or some duct tape to stick him when he tried to get the penny as bait ... what fun ...

miss that a lot

So Everybody IS Irish on St Pat's day?

Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day, we say as we ditch work to catch a parade or sneak down to the pub for a pint of cheer in honor of the Emerald Isle and its patron saint. For more than a few of us, it turns out, there's truth to the tongue-in-cheek claim.

Geneticists from Trinity College Dublin have found that a whopping 3 million men worldwide carry a distinctive Y chromosome that links them to Niall of the Nine Hostages, a fifth century Irish king who clearly wasn't shy about spreading his genes. Only the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan is thought to have more descendents.

I wish my St Patrick's Day could be happy as others people's. I'm live near the jammed-packed Westport bar district, and I'm not going anywhere.

The only year I went to the parade, I saw more drunks and more men pissing in public than I ever had in my life. After that I avoided the parade. A few years ago, some people were shooting guns at each other at the parade, and that finally led our civic leaders to do something. They moved the time from 2 pm to 11 am in the hopes that the general public would be more sober. It has seemed to help.

However, the rowdy drunkenness, the accidents and the fights continue. There's a hospital, St Luke's, a couple blocks from the bars, and St Luke's girds its loins every year for a stream of broken noses, head injuries, etc.

The year before last, a young guy, drunk, managed to go off an upper storey of a parking garage. He landed on his back, paralyzing himself forever. Last year, a high school (high school!) football player got drunk and smashed the family SUV at high speed, killing a buddy (or was it two buddies?) and seriously injuring himself.

This is considered normal in my home town.

As for my family and friends, we'll mark the feast on the 19th, with food and music. There will be twelve of us. A six pack might get drunk, just to show we can do it, but that will be all.

And it will be a very happy occasion.

Walkie, I must confess I never thought of you as a golfer. Do you have a niblick or a mashie? (I love those old names for clubs.)

There was a Chicago socialite in the 1920's who named her son Niblick.

Looking ahead...Gonna smoke my Peterson St Patrick's Day pipe, and drink some NON-green beer. (Green beer is so cliche!) Maybe some whiskey. Listen to some great Irish music at a local pub. Toast the dead--"The Parting Glass"--and celebrate life! "The Spree"

Sláinte mhaith.

Picked up a box of Irish Oatmeal today at Sobeys grocery. Read the box. Had one of those "May you..." sayings on it. $5. We got oats up to our *** here in Canada. I bought Canuck oats for $3.29. No saying on the package tho.

Of course, if there was a saying on the Canuck package, it would have to be in English and French.

All the best to you Irish wherever on this Earth you may be! I'm off to a concert where I'll be sure to do a couple of Irish songs. I havn't decided what yet but I'm thinking The Rising Of The Moon and perhaps Galway Bay. I did Kevin Barry, Isle Of Innisfree, The Irish wake last night. Another one tomorrow afternoon so I have to save something for that. Slainte Mor!

I'm sitting outside on my Irish lawn chairs (Paddy O'Furniture) gazing up at my favorite constellation (the mighty hunter O'Ryan) and listening to the Corrigan Brothers sing about my favorite Irish American President.

No Guinness for me this year, as I gave up drinking at home for Lent and I didn't go out this evening, but I did do two St. Patrick's music programs earlier in the day, at a geropsychiatric unit and an assisted living community. So 'twas a very nice, uneventful St. Pat's. Even the snow in Seattle today didn't stick on the roads, and the sun came out in the afternoon and early evening.

I doubted she was Irish until she said to trow the beef into the Dutch oven.

Thanks for the link, Ed. I've taken notes and plan to make the stew.

Today we celebrated by playing Irish music - Cill Chaise, Beauty in Tears and Red-haired Boy. We also did Maiden Lane, but that's probably English.

I must say that I am a wee bit disappointed that there was not a lot of St.Patricks Day content on the 'Cat this year. In any case this cranky old displaced Scotchman's descendant sang Irish songs at three different venues this weekend. I had a Hell of a good time doing it as well! I just wonder where other catters were hiding?

I was at a pub with my favoritemost band...one of the band members is ailing and it was both beautiful and sad to be there...

We did discuss if it was possible to overbedeck oneself for St. Patrick's Day. I made do with green fingernail polish and a kiss me I'm Irish T shirt...was quite underdressed..but I do not know if the green tutu and the shamrock tights and the vest with thousands of sequins and the shamrock necklace and the tiara together would have been too much...I am inclined to think one can gild the lily..and especially since some..not all..Irish jewelry can be had for mere pennies..it is easy to go overboard...I personally would not wear the headgear that has the bobbling shamrocks on it.. but to each her own. mg

"Musta been the Scots" Know you're joing but just wanted to add that in truth outside of football games the Scots are just about the least likely people to riot. Even when the riots were sweeping certain British cities last year Scotland was pretty much immune. Just as it was during the steet riots in the 1980s etc.
