Subject: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Mar 09 - 01:11 PM Our Tunes Sessions are generally held on the last Tuesday of the month. So that makes next Tuesday 31 March, our next Beginners Tune Session. This may be confusing for those of you who knew that we had one last Tuesday - because I cannot be relied on to work out which Tuesday is the last one of the month. Our Song Session will be on Wednesday 1 April (Honest) which is the next day. We are also providing songs and tunes at Chorlton's Big Green Festival at St Clements Church, Saturday 4 April off and on from 12 until 4ish. The Big Green Ceilidh will happen in the Church between 8 and 11 with Midgebites, bar and fun for all. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Will Fly Date: 27 Mar 09 - 03:06 PM Les - out of curiosity, are the two sessions mutually exclusive, i.e. no songs at the Tunes one, and no tunes at the Songs one - if you get my drift? I might be up that way towards the end of April and - having read so much about the Beech on Mudcat - fancy seeing and hearing it in person. |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Mar 09 - 03:58 PM You will be most welcome Will. We generally play tunes on the song night as people arrive then when enough have sat down with pints, usually around 8.30, we sing until 9.45 ish. We open the second half with one tune then sing until 11.00. Bob and John nearly always play some tunes on Northumbrian Smallpipes an others offer tunes, poems or stories. This has worked well since December 2007. We have had 3 tunes sessions with 12 to 20 people and ended the night the first 2 times with some songs. The tunes session is a bit less layed-back because we don't really know how to make it more relaxed. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: GUEST,Dave Bishop Date: 27 Mar 09 - 05:31 PM "The tunes session is a bit less layed-back because we don't really know how to make it more relaxed." As you said last time, Les, Sir: "The beatings will continue until morale improves". |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Mar 09 - 07:08 PM I have to say to all and sundry (whatever that means) the song sessions are ................. I dont' know what to say really .......... they are full of much joy because Dave, Sue, Bob, John, Phil, Kate, Ged, Ken, John, Alan, John, Anne, Martin, Olga, Norman .............. I know I cannot list everyone but it's because they all come and sing that we are layed-back an harmonious. we sing one at a time with choruses but tunes are lots of people trying to do the same thing at the same time - a bit like group sex - so I have been told - gets coat and leaves ...................... No, it's definately better than that Les. It tends to last quite a bit longer as well which is a bonus....... Please do try and pop in Will, it would be great to see you. Ged |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Will Fly Date: 28 Mar 09 - 09:09 AM Group sex, eh? Sounds good to me! |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Will Fly Date: 28 Mar 09 - 09:10 AM Mind you, I'm probably better at groping than grouping these days... :-) |

Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Will Fly Date: 31 Mar 09 - 08:59 AM Les - checking diaries and event lists, am I right in thinking there will be a session at the Beech on Wednesday 6th May? I'm planning my random jaunt around English sessions, singarounds and clubs in the first week of May - Sunday evening to Friday evening - and then back for a band gig on the Saturday. If there is a meeting on 6th May, perhaps you could PM me with a suitable pub/B&B in the area. Ta, Will |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: GUEST,Myrtle in Manchester Date: 31 Mar 09 - 11:04 AM Looking forward to being there and meeting you all. Am I reight in thinking the session kicks off at around 8.30? Regards, Myrtle |

Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Gedi Date: 01 Apr 09 - 08:28 AM Well the Tunes session went well last night - thanks to all who came, and especially to Myrtle who did manage to find us :) Just a reminder that tonight is the 1st Wed of the month so it will be the Singaround later on - get there early to be assured of a seat! Singing generally starts at 8:30 ish although we do play a few tunes beforehand from 8:00 onwards. cheers Ged |

Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: greg stephens Date: 01 Apr 09 - 09:57 AM Forget boring old Chorlton(I dont think Rosetta Tharpe is coming tonight). Come to the Greyhound in Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. Then you will see some fun. |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Apr 09 - 10:11 AM Clearly Chorlton wasn't too boring for Sister Rosetta, Muddy Waters, The Beegees, The Beech Boys, Quentin Crisp or The Boat Band as I recall. I would encourage anyone to visit The Greyhound, I guess S on T needs all the help it can get since Robbie left? Best wishes L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Will Fly Date: 01 Apr 09 - 10:21 AM "Quentin Crisp with the Boat Band" - now I'd pay to see that! |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Spleen Cringe Date: 01 Apr 09 - 07:10 PM A fab night as ever. Lots of good stuff, but a special mensh must be given to the people who did a sterling Willie O'Winesbury and to Dave's 'I Live Not Where I Love'... |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Apr 09 - 04:22 AM Thanks Nigel, yes Sandra and Phil - a brilliant Willie O'Winesbury and Dave was in excellent form. Thanks also to Ged, Kate, Leia, Lia's friend, John, Ingrid for another great story, Barbara, Mike and his friend, Dave, Gordon, Brian, Bob and his pipes, Sue, Anne, John, Alan, Martin, Phil and yourself. We clearly outnumbered everyone else in the pub but the others put up an interesting resistance banging, shouting and with the imaginative use of the fruit machine. Still, they buy beer, lots of it obviously, and help to keep the pub open. Hope to see you all on Saturday around 12 at St Clements, High Lane, Chorlton, for the Big Green and around 8 for the Ceilidh - same place -with John Js Midgebites |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: John J Date: 02 Apr 09 - 04:28 AM Les, Did you get my email regarding Bollin Morris being able to field a side on Saturday afternoon? John |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Apr 09 - 04:33 AM Thanks John, just responded, been swanning about in London, Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Phil Edwards Date: 02 Apr 09 - 06:06 PM Another vote for Dave's I live not where I love; wonderful stuff. The Beech is always good, but sometimes it's really special - and that was one of those moments. |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: GUEST,Dave Bishop Date: 03 Apr 09 - 04:46 AM Thanks, Pip - it's very good of you to say so! It's a song that I usually sing to myself while I'm cooking my tea - I hardly ever sing it in public. Actually I still reeling from Sandra and Phil's two songs. Isn't Sandra an amazing singer and isn't Phil a great accompanist? Anyway, must stop now in case I miss anyone out. Everyone seemed to be on fine form that night - must have been the spring air! |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Apr 09 - 05:17 AM Exlnt chance to create good music: Hope to see you all on Saturday around 12 at St Clements, High Lane, Chorlton, for the Big Green and around 8 for the Ceilidh - same place -with John Js Midgebites Cheers L in C |

Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Jack Blandiver Date: 15 Apr 09 - 06:49 AM He he! Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 16 Apr 09 - 05:19 AM An interesting night of songs and tunes from Helen, Alan, Brian, Dave, Dave, Ann, John, Martin, Leaha, Norman, and his priceless 'Dad's Medley', Claudine who sang in French, as she is so, but explained the songs to us in impeccable English. Also Hel and Jules who sang for the first but, we feel sure, not the last time. A special thanks to that bloke with the baseball cap and mobile phone who clearly received an important message as Dave started 'Liverpool Gals'. The possibility of 'sampling' mobile phone conversations into folk songs opens up many new avenues, and we at the Beech are ready to explore them all! See you all on Tuesday April 28 for Tunes and Wednesday 6 for Songs. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 17 Apr 09 - 05:09 AM Not forgetting 'Songs in the Snug' at the Saracen's Head, Warburton, near Lymn, Cheshire, Wednesday 22 April. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 Apr 09 - 01:14 PM I see the end of April (Come she will) approaching and signalling the last Tuesday of this month. Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Apr 09 - 08:10 AM Singing on 6 May as that will be the first Wednesday in May. This is why people built Stonehenge, I believe. When the sun passes over the Big Stone and shines through the Big Gap we all down the Beech for songs. L in C |

I can't find your eamil address!!! Les, if you see this could you please forward Dave my email address??? I don't want to post it on t'web. Thanks and sorry for the thread hijack. Maybe an elf can delete me in 24 hours? Thanks! Nigel |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: GUEST,brakn Date: 28 Apr 09 - 11:45 AM Won't be able to make it tonight. :-( Have a good night. |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Apr 09 - 11:53 AM This is a great shame Mr Brakn, but somehow we will struggle on. See you eventually Les |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 29 Apr 09 - 02:31 AM Well, what an amazing night? Thanks to Rob, Ged, Ken, Mytle, Lynne, Chris, Steve, Debbie, Jane, Pete, Jen, Mickey, Brian, Gordon and Phil. A great collective of people and instruments played with great skill and no mean discipline. See you all next Wednesday for songs (and a few tunes) and May 26 for lots of tunes, Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Myrtle Date: 29 Apr 09 - 03:25 PM Lynn and I really enjoyed the tunes session, thanks to everyone for making us so welcome, and being so patient as regards tempo! Kind regards, Myrtle |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Phil Edwards Date: 29 Apr 09 - 03:36 PM That tempo was good. I was itching to go faster on a couple of songs but tripping over my fingers on a couple of others - any faster and I would have been completely lost on the hard ones, & probably started tripping up on the easier ones. |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 30 Apr 09 - 03:40 AM I will stick with slow and steady for most of the night but we could have a quicker session in the last 20 minutes or so - would this put too many people off? I like the al together, then melodeons only for two then all then whistles for two and so on. What do others think? I really am open to suggestions of any sort about the night. Last Tuesday was the 5th and I feel we are beginning to settle in. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 May 09 - 07:15 AM How better to celebrate the May than a Singaround at the Beech this Wednesday? Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Gedi Date: 01 May 09 - 08:46 AM hi Les I like the splitting up of the instruments - it gives a different feel to the tune and when everyone kicks in again it's interesting to see (hear!) the whole again. Its almost like pulling the tune apart to see how it works. I think the last 20/30 mins could stand to be a little faster for those who can stand it - and for those who cant it will challenge them a little more. After all, one can't play a tune slowly forever. Myrtle, lovely to see you again, and to hear that wonderful sounding concertina of yours. I do hope you will come again when you can, Ged |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Myrtle Date: 02 May 09 - 04:44 AM Thanks for that Ged, I love coming to the tunes session and hope to come as much as I can....my long suffering friend Lynn is happy for me to keep coming to stay, but i think she's away next time unfortunately, (how selfish of her!!!!). Right, I'm off to practice!! Kind regards, Myrtle |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 05 May 09 - 01:15 PM Now, I always find Bank Holidays confusing but I feel secure in saying tomorrow, Wednesday 6 May, will be songs in the Beech? Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 07 May 09 - 04:37 AM Thanks to Ged, Frank, Olga, Ken, Phil, Sandra, Dave, Phil, 2/3 of The Bailey Sisters, Mike, Brian, Debbie, Jen, Helen, Claudine (songs in French!!) Bob, Norman, Alan, Nigel, Martin and Dave for a brilliant and varied evening of songs. I'd like to thank that couple in the corner who talked and giggled through lots of songs but it would clearly be inappropriate. Although the young woman mentioned Meatloaf she neither sang one of his songs nor offered to share that said delicacy with the rest of us. Timothy Taylor Best was good whilst it lasted, the TT Landlord was young but keen and the Pedigree was ........ Pedigridious, I think. More Songs on first and third Wednesdays and Tunes on the last Tuesday of the month. With a good chance of a small local tour, The Bowling Green, The Horse & Jockey and The Beech, by Bollin Morris on the last Tuesday in June, much fun will be had. Thanks again L in C |
Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 18 May 09 - 04:23 AM So, as the third Wednesday approaches I feel songs coming on, The Beech, Beech Road, Chorlton Cheers L in C |

Subject: RE: Songs and Tunes at The Beech, Chorlton, From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 May 09 - 11:39 AM Cheered up with a pint and a song or two in the Beech last Wednesday? Cheer up again with Tuesday Tunes tomorrow (26th) 8 ish in the Beech, dots and slow careful playing of familiar tunes can be guaranteed. Cheers L in C |
