Well I thought I'd start the official This Is Summer thread. The earlier thread was advance notification of summer and autumn knockholt dates. This one is solely for The "This Is Summer" event 17th - 21st June 2009 See KNOCKHOLT and folkmob.com for more info.

looking forward to a weekend around a campfire with the likes of Pete The Hat, Richard Bridge, John Barden, Folkmob and a host of other musical spirits.

Alas NoisySprog will at most visit during the day since canvas and portaloos are apparently not suitable...

Love to come. Looks like I might be able to blag a ride off the ever kindly indulgent VTam & SilentOne for weekend.

If so will have to blag tent off of other kind peeps - I think Dilligaf made offer? *If* still available I'd much appreciate!

VT&S1 have only ickle space enough for my bum (despite it's obviously teeny fairy-child proportions...) - & If I do need to train in, carrying tents/camp gear through multiple changes and London underground will be a right pain in the same.

Well have official invite to stay with Fisheye and Fair Maiden on Saturday night. So we will be arriving sometime on Sat with Crow Sister and whatever we can jam around her pixieish posterior in the back seat.

Although it's actually about the 'last day of Spring', I thought it might make a fitting chorus song for Knockholt.

I have been listening to a fair bit of Anne Briggs the last few days, and I have decided that she over-decorated. On this recording (where her own pitch is a bit suspect too) you can hear that the additional singers are a little behind her, possibly because they are having to wait for the decoration to develop before knowing hwere to go themselves (or possibly because of her notoriously personal sense of timing).   

You may well do it better than her.

The instrument is not a mandolin. She played an Irish bouzouki (but it may have been before there was such a thing as an Irish bouzouki) and acccording to some notes I have somewhere she used a drone tuning - it might have been EAEA - and was largely self-taught.

I'm not keen on such a high degree of ornament either. And I don't feel it 'suits' E. Trads all that much in particular - just a personal preference. Overall I can find Briggs a little too frilly for my listening tastes.

It is well known that a lot of Brigg's songs were learned by her in an Irish environment, and possibly that is where she got the habit.

I wonder if we will hear the Ghostly whistler this year. Woke me up last year? Very good though so I cant complain. Others heard it too. I wonder if that sinister looking house on thew over side of the hedge has anything to do with it. Have you die hard knockers ever noticed over the years The Sun never shines on that house. I have never seen anyone enter or leave and i was talking to the landlady of the Tally Ho who often has a ride up that lane told me that her horse does not like passing the place , I just told her to dig her heels in and

On a bit of a tangent again, but one singer I've only heard a couple of songs of is Frankie Armstrong, but I like her slightly husky and 'sing song' musical voice and style more than Briggs. Will have listen out for more. June Tabor I only discovered a shortish time ago likewise, but she's got a great tone and masterful vocal dexterity.

When we first camped at Knockholt about 22 years ago, there was a different house there it was empty for years, we used to go over and snoop about, the gardens back and front were very overgrown and we found an unlocked garage with an old vintage car inside. It did feel quite eerie over there, then one year we found they had pulled the house down and were building a new one in it's place. Maybe the ghostly whistler walks Stoneings Lane by night searching for his old home and car.

That's just reminded me of something I'd forgotton for years, when my brother Tony was about 18 months old and just learning to talk he used to point to the bottom of our stairs and say "man", it was only when I overheard my Mother telling my Aunt about it that I realized she was quite freaked out by it, until then I hadn't given it a second thought.

Re Mick singing The Derby Ram, I'm training him to snore it, it's coming along nicely as he gets in lots of practice. Pigs Ear is next Friday 29th, unfortunately we can't come as we'll be travelling back from Dorset with the grandchildren on the Saturday.

VT its a great weekend and if your staying Saturday night that can be the best night of the whole four days. Can be Friday nights are also very good. I think alot of folk may converge for the whole four days this year.

I will be getting there very early Wednesday morning pitch up me tent then down the Tally Ho
to catch up with the locals.

Im looking to be there for around 10 oclock maybe earlier I wanna be set up and down the Tally Ho before it closes at 3pm. Alternately

I will stay the Tuesday night to be there for this but I want permission to do it this time.

"The Toilet People" Sounds like a name for a band or a B movie - do they still have B movies? Most movies these days I would rate as Z movies. Anyway you can always go and ask the farmer to unlock the gate. He says he has to close it because of the eastern european campers who try to camp there permanantly and would eat all his sheep if the could - honest that's what happened last year.

Right the wood is all ordered and will be delivered on Weds... The guy said that he can cut the wood up a bit smaller this year as they have new equipment should make it easier to pick up and chuck on.

There is still alot of wood left over from last years September washout its stacked in Dead tree Copse(Flint Pit). There is a lot of it because we did not burn much due to the rain. Richard cut alot of it up with his chain saw but there are still quite large bigguns thrown in the Nettles. I know because Me & Mick forde between us lifted them and my Liver nearly came out me ears.

The links are both working for me the knockholt one is a bit slow to load. Anyway here is the message from the treasurer:

"The committee have decided that we are going to aim to make Knockholt self funding as the total outlay for the two weekends in June and September 2008 came to £1,000 last year the main drain being the toilets and wood which amounted to £759.26. The majority of committee members felt that we shouldn't be using the club funds to finance it. So it was decided that this June as well as the £4.00 per night for the farmer we will charge a further £2.00 per night which will go towards the cost of the toilets and wood etc. Only charging the £4 farmers fee for those who come on Wednesday and Thursday as that is really the working party who get everything set up before the main event on Friday and Saturday. Pauline will also run a raffle with the proceeds going into Knockholt expenses, Obviously the funds will still have to shoulder the bulk of the cost this time."

I did respond to the committee about my concerns and issues that I have with the above decision and as yet have not had a reply. two committee members that I did speak to informaly, told me that they were not present when this decision was made, and they too had concerns..

My son saw little balls of blue lightening rolling around in the bathtub in our basement during a thunderstorm. Poor kid (he was ten), scared the bejesus out of him.

The problem with viewing the knockholt site message was to do with internet explorer The message was cut & pasted from anemail and appeared perfect if viewed with firefox but in IE it was as a continuous line going off page, I have now adjusted it so it can be read on IE.
