Subject: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Rasener Date: 05 Jul 09 - 06:29 AM I find this hard to believe. How is it possible to make such a cock up. The RAF Waddington Air Show is a big event in Lincolnshire UK, and one of the big expectaions was to have the Vulcan Bomber flying at the event. The plane was there, the crew were there and all the team necessary to make it happen. Totally sold out event. The only problem was a cock up in the paperwork. LOL I wouldn't like to be the person(s) who didn't think to make sure the paperwork was in place well before the event. Good planning eh. Good job the wonderful Red Arrows were there. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/8134361.stm |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: My guru always said Date: 05 Jul 09 - 06:53 AM That's such a shame, makes me glad we saw it 2 days running in June while it was practising and then performing at a Brize Norton Family Day. We were luckily staying locally at the time & got some good video of it. What silly billies & such a waste of money too! |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Newport Boy Date: 05 Jul 09 - 12:55 PM We had good service from the Red Arrows at Thornbury Carnival yesterday. Due for a fly past at 17:00, we had an announcement that they would be 6 minutes late. Team Leader Jas Hawker is from Thornbury, and he texted his mum's mobile to say they'd be late. She passed it to the Carnival announcer. Good to see that the RAF are up with the latest technology. Phil |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Eric the Viking Date: 05 Jul 09 - 01:05 PM What a bollox !! There has been a huge input to get XH558 to the skies. Waddington is one of the best air shows ever. We used to go regularly. Always loved Vulcans. I get the Vulcan calender every year and several other fund raising items. Once passing Waddington I saw three taking off at once (About 1973 ish). I got some great pics at Church Fenton and some great video at Waddington and Cauldrose. The insurance cost is phenominal. what a shame. |

Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: bubblyrat Date: 05 Jul 09 - 03:32 PM I had enough Vulcan experiences to last a lifetime ! Whilst serving at RNAS Yeovilton ( HMS HERON), at that time a Master Diversion Airfield,1964--66,we would often get two Vulcans from RAF Scampton flying in and basing themselves there ,for a few days, whilst practising "scrambles" ; the aircraft would be on a small dispersal close to the threshold of Runway 09/27.The a/c would be manned up all the time, and it was impossible to get anywhere near them due to the numerous heavily-armed and dog-assisted RAF Regiment guys ( " Rock-Apes !!" ).At any given time, and without any prior warning,a signal would be given, via the "telebrief" and a pair of Verey lights fired from the roof of the VCP in the Tower, and within about TWO MINUTES the Vulcans were spooling up and rolling !! The noise was INCREDIBLE,and ,if it was daylight,we would watch in awe as they climbed, seemingly almost vertically,up into the clouds before levelling off and moving away very rapidly. You won't see that today !! ( if you get to see a Vulcan at all !!). We always knew that they were coming,of course----the RAF had their own self-contained camp on the far side of the airfield ; Usually ,a huge Blackburn "Beverley" transport-aircraft would come in to land, followed by some "Hastings " passenger-aircraft carrying "Rockapes", groundcrew,etc----after that,we all knew that "The Vulcans are Coming" !!! Happy ( and interesting !) days. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: gnu Date: 05 Jul 09 - 03:50 PM Used to go up the hill in Goose Bay, Labrador and watch the Vulcans touch-and-go... they would feather turn so close it seemed as if you could reach out and touch them. Graceful. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Georgiansilver Date: 05 Jul 09 - 03:50 PM The rest of the Show at Waddington was not the best I have seen but was OK.... Managed to get some nice sunburn in spite of the free usage of factor 20. My 7 yr old grandson came with me and wants to go again next year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Phot Date: 05 Jul 09 - 04:34 PM XH558, still Queen of the skies! I love the sound that a Vulcan makes. I went to the first RAF Boscome Down open day where there was a sound off between the B52 (Eight engines), the B1 (Four engines and afterburners), and the Vulcan (Four RR Olympus, no afterburners). Result? Game, set, and match to the Vulcan! The Vulcan howl has to be heard to be belived, it was the one airframe that I never had the chance to work on in the RAF, something I still want to do, but as all my aircraft engineering quals have now lapsed, it ain't going to happen! Wassail!! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Tangledwood Date: 05 Jul 09 - 07:00 PM As a long time aviation enthusiast I had yearned for many years to see a Vulcan in the air. That came true at Farnborough last year - what a magnificent sight (and sound!). How disappointing it would have been to travel half way round the world to Waddington only to find the aircraft grounded by something as petty as paperwork. It reminds me of an airshow I went to in Moscow a few years ago. An Ilyushin IL14 was available for joyflights which a group of us pre-booked to go on. The aircraft was there OK, but nobody thought to give the crew entry permits to the airport. |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Royston Date: 06 Jul 09 - 12:22 PM That is such a shame. If I recall, as some people have mentioned, it seemed like the last flying example would never be granted an airworthiness cert. and folks had to fight tooth and nail to get it in the air again. I have been helping a friend restore a boat at Rochford this year (my day job being in the marine sphere) and I regularly drive past the perimeter of Southend Airport where there is a Vulcan airframe sitting. It seems to be decaying. Such a pity. |

Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: Ross Campbell Date: 07 Jul 09 - 03:49 PM A Vulcan stood at the entrance to Blackpool's Sqires Gate Airport for many years, growing more and more delapidated until this:- http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/01/vulcan_for_sale/ It was eventually bought by the owner of a pub in East Lancashire who hoped to feature it in his beer-garden. I think he ran into planning permission problems and I presume the plane was eventually broken up. There are reports of "bits" appearing on eBay after that. Ross |
Subject: RE: BS: Vulcan bomber grounded at display From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 07 Jul 09 - 06:40 PM No, let's not worry about paperwork. We know better than the Civil Aviation Authority and the Vulcan To The Sky Trust after all. Why should our innocent enjoyment be marred by pettifogging restrictions? The fact is, the aircraft does NOT currently have a Permit To Fly. See http://www.vulcantothesky.org/ It should get said permit, hopefully within days. As someone who lives pretty close to the home of XH558 at Bruntingthorpe, also somebody who is a member of VTTS, I'm rather glad that the CAA is careful about this sort of thing. |
