Thanks, Debra |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 19 Jul 09 - 05:18 PM yes,go to Scarborough railway station, then turn right, walk straight on,in the direction of the sea front about half a mile, and you will come to the sea front, throgh a pedestrianised shopping precinct the road eventually curves to the right, youwill meet a road that runs along the sea front cross straight over, the festival office is there, near the fish loading bay, right next to the beach. |

Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 21 Jul 09 - 03:57 AM Bummer. We've got to leave Sunday afternoon to rescue Granny from the kids. I'm sure we might manage a beer with one or two of you on Friday/ Saturday nights. All of our slots are on Saturday, so Friday night we'll be taking in as much music from others as we can. We look forward to meeting those of you that we don't know and catching up with those that we do! Paul & Wendy |

Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ross Campbell Date: 21 Jul 09 - 08:29 PM Hi, Barry Hoping to get over early Saturday morning to catch your early spot, then can stay long enough into the evening to hear your other set. Hope we can get together in between to swap songs. I'll have to limit my carrying instruments to a couple of concertinas. See you soon. Ross |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 22 Jul 09 - 05:31 PM up! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: GeoffLawes Date: 22 Jul 09 - 06:21 PM From the Events Schedule I can't tell whether the events in the pubs are singarounds or just performance spots for the booked guests. Can anyone enlighten me? And if there are singarounds. where are the best ones? |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: MoorleyMan Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:25 PM Hi Barry, Am hoping to make it across for that early Sat slot of yours too, looking forward to meeting you. And hi GeoffLawes, I've noticed that same lack of precise information too, though the Events Schedule on the website itself is pretty detailed as far as it goes. I may be wrong, but it looks very much as though the festival is modelled on the old Lancaster Maritime Festival scenario, viz. all the pub/club sessions would appear to be just a succession of booked-guest spots - except that there is one planned two-hour singaround on the Sat teatime (and even that is hosted by a number of booked guests). Which is a bit of a bummer for those of us non-booked-guests who would like more than just one meagre chance to sing during the festival! Unless someone who's been to SeaFest before knows different...? |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:54 PM Dave - Moorley man get to our evening slot at the merchant and you can have a song or two |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:56 PM indeed anyone up for a song |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 03:14 AM Moorley man, Your assumptions about the festival are correct. The organiser has always claimed that the festival is aimed at "normal" people rather than "folkies" (if you get my drift!). I understand that this is what Scarborough Council (who fund Seafest) have asked him to do. There's always plenty of stuff to join in with though. Paul |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 04:12 AM on friday july 24 2009,he will be busking on the liverpoool to scarborough train, with his concertina. exact times and which stations as yet to be decided,he is sponsored by Trans Pennine Express,as part of Scarborough Sea Fest, watch out for hom in huddersfield or possibly Scarborough,or maybe Sowerby Bridge. moorley man,try the leeds arms on a saturday night after the booked guests have finished. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: MoorleyMan Date: 23 Jul 09 - 05:09 AM Thanks for all the hints, chaps. Sadly I won't be able to stay around for much of Sat evening as I only have a "day pass" (LOL), but it looks from the schedule like the Leeds Arms is a good afternoon sess to be at. Stallion - I could make your afternoon Merchant slot but prob not the evening one. Is there much distance between the venues, d'you know? Banjiman - ok, I now appreciate the organiser's remit - it was helpful of you to point that out. But hey ho, how d' you define "normal" people??? Pass me the straitjacket, nurse! (Wasn't it the Bonzos who said "We are normal and we want our freedom"? On second thoughts, there was "we are normal and we dig Bert Weedon" too! And he never sang a sea song or shanty in his life, tho' he might've recorded a twangy version of What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor...) Cheers m' dears! MM |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 06:13 AM "But hey ho, how d' you define "normal" people???" Moorley Man, your guess is as good as mine.... maybe lack of swirly trousers? There are some new venues this year, I'm not sure where they all are. In previous years the venues have all been close together and helpfully, maps have been available. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: GeoffLawes Date: 23 Jul 09 - 07:21 AM Thanks for the information. If I interprete it correctly this is a festival of booked performers together with audiences whose contribution is limited to joining in with the choruses. The Hull Sea festival, in September, by contrast offers a choice of passive and active audience modes. There are free dockside concerts for the non performing public along with singarounds in the pubs which incorporate a fifteen minute booked guest spot every hour. Much better. I can only come on the Sunday - there are no organised events on the Sunday evening but might there be a singaround in one of the pubs then? |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 07:29 AM I guess the informal stuff will take place where it takes place! i.e. in some of the pubs after the booked acts, Saturday 5.00–7.30pm 'Come All Ye' FESTIVAL SINGAROUND at The Lancaster Inn, Sunday evening in the pubs...... at the end of the day you pays your money(or not, it's all free) and takes your choice. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 07:31 AM the concerts are free,at Scarboro sea fest, there are plenty of chances to join in choruses, there is a song writing competition,[there is a festival singaround, check the programme]. if you want a singaround in a pub I would approach the Leeds arms, they are in my experience very helpful, why not organise a fringe event, with your friends. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 23 Jul 09 - 08:07 AM the logical time is when the last act finishes 4 30pm on the Sunday.Iam sure the pub landlord would be delighted. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 23 Jul 09 - 08:54 AM Find out where 2BS&S are on sunday and join in the singing! Barry & Ken have arrived and are currently rehearsing in my front room sounds great! The venues are no more than three to four hundred yards apart, about Black Swan to Marks and Spencers for the Yorkies! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: DebC Date: 23 Jul 09 - 12:41 PM Keep my fellow Americans out of trouble, peter! Debra |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ann N Date: 23 Jul 09 - 02:35 PM Saw the Grand Turk leave port to head down to Scarborough this afternoon when I nipped down to the shops :) |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Micca Date: 23 Jul 09 - 03:41 PM DebC I think the phrases " Herding cats" or "Nailing Jello to the ceiling " might be applicable to the chances of success at "Keep my fellow Americans out of trouble, peter!"!! Micca ( who is looking forward to seeing some old friends and assorted reprobates and renewing some friendships too) |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Raggytash Date: 24 Jul 09 - 04:36 AM Bloody hard work getting the Turk to Scarborough, Skipper had us doing safety drills ALL the way down as well as putting more sail on her than I have seen in a long time, no sooner got them up than we had to take the buggers down. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 24 Jul 09 - 07:15 AM Van packed....... does she really need 3 guitars and an accordion? We'll be there in a couple of hours. Yay! Finn & Haddie & 2 BS & a S in fine voice at The Black Swan, York last night. See you all later. Paul |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 24 Jul 09 - 08:22 AM Ken & I are just getting reaady to chow down with Chief Peter at the stove. We're headed to Robin Hood's Bay the to hit the fest. The Black Swan was just wonderful last night. My 1st intro to a Brittish folk club, we need to import the concept, was far more than all I expected. Wendy & Paul's group. Blind Summit, we're just fantastic & extremly entaining, aside from being very talented. The sun is now shining & the rain is clearing, hoping it stays that way. Looking foward to the weekend. Barry |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Jul 09 - 09:30 AM Nice to get these reports! Keep 'em coming. Barry and Ken- So you're really there! Take a moment to meditate on that. And do make some effort to pace yourselves so you don't totally blow your vocal chords in your next set, and then have to endure the "sympathy" of all your fine new friends, and supporters back here in the States. Cheerily, Charley Noble, who is enduring a soaking rain at our local family festival |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jul 09 - 07:36 PM So while we await a report from our friends overseas: Drunken Squid Verses When the Giant Squid's drained his final jar, You'll find him clinging to the bar, With wheel adrift, sheets to the wind, He'll need a tow back home again. (C. Noble) He hugs the lassies and the keep, The tables, housecat, beds and sheets, The bar, the bottles, and the door, And the air is filled with Drunk Squid Roar. (Amos) The poor ol' squid's had too much booze, The cheese and onions are a churning ooze; As he raises his mugs for a final drink, A giant belch fills the pub with ink! (C. Noble) The Colossal Squid was the last come by, He never drank but he said he'd try; He drank so much of the ale and stout, They had to close the pub and heave 'im out! (C. Noble) Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Murray MacLeod Date: 26 Jul 09 - 10:48 AM Barry, Deb, regrettably the contract I am working on didn't get finished as I had hoped, so unfortunately I was unable to make it down there. I have to work on it today as well, the deadline is tomorrow, so it looks like it will have to be a meet up in Boston again, hopefully this fall. Hope you both had a smashing time in Scarborough ! I did actually try to post this much earlier but there appeared to be a period suring which the forum wasn't accepting any posts ... |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Micca Date: 26 Jul 09 - 11:22 AM I am home from Scarborough Seafest!! having met up with an assortment of Mudcatters, including Barry Finn and Ken Schatz who seemed to be having a whale of a time and were in Great voice, Carol and Andrew, Moorley man and a couple of strays wearing "Schooner Adventure, Gloucester MA" T shirts!!! we had a good sing and a bright sunny day ( In Yorkshire!!!), Thanks to the organisers I wish Cobble and I could have stayed longer! Micca |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 26 Jul 09 - 04:30 PM Home again home again Jiggety Jig..........well wasn't that just brilliant! Barry and Ken went down a storm and we all had a ball. I will you all as I settle down to working again! Pete |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ross Campbell Date: 26 Jul 09 - 06:25 PM Sorry I missed you, Micca. Managed to reach Scarborough in time for most of Finn & Haddie's first set Saturday morning. Swapped CDs with Barry who promised to sing me the CW9 Convoy song posted on the Merchant Navy Songs thread a few weeks back. Down to the West Pier then to say hallo to Ken & Jan at the Chantey Cabin and check out the open-air concert platform (always seemed to have a good crowd throughout the day) and the beer-tent (tasty selection of real ales). Caught Barry and Ken a couple more times at different venues round the town. At the Merchant they were followed by Dick Miles, who himself seemed to have been followed in by a strolling hen party in full flight. As soon as he'd finished "Sailortown" (one of my favourite arrangements of Cicely Fox-Smith's poems) he was assailed by requests - "Can you sing Molly Malone? It was my mother's favourite song." and "Do you know any Irish songs?" Of course he could - and he did - and had them in the palm of his hand for the rest of the set - masterly! Monkey's Fist I haven't seen before - a good strong set from this four-man group, mostly unaccompanied shanties, occasional guitar and duet concertina. Debra Cowan had less luck in the Lancaster later on, where a loud crowd of visitors made singing or listening impossible. Even the landlady apologised, but was powerless to quiet them. Odd spells of relative peace allowed a few songs to suggest that this woman is worth a serious listen - confirmed later at the Sub-Aqua Club where she was joined by Helen Pitt, when they alternated and occasionally harmonised on ballads and songs. There they followed Hughie Jones, in great form, and great to see him again after last year's health problems. Surrounded by ships' bells, brass plates and binnacles, the trophies of the Sub-Aqua Clubs expeditions to wreck sites round the British Isles and beyond (some great photographs too), he was in his element, relaxed and humourous. At the end of the evening, a firework display brought everybody back to the beach by the pier for the grand finale, and after that (don't go, there's more!) the open-air concert continued. Managed to find Barry and Ken before we left, and as promised, he sang the CW9 song into my digital camera (just discovered, third year I've had it, that it has a video facility). Now on my to-do list, along with "Sailortown". Extremely tired on the way back, but really had a great day. Sorry I couldn't stay for Sunday, when Richard Grainger's musical play The Moorland Whalers, with music by Chris Parkinson, was to be premiered. Any reports? |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: MoorleyMan Date: 26 Jul 09 - 06:52 PM Yes, Saturday was great, and Barry & Ken especially so... And I so agree, Debra's one of those best-kept secrets, a real unsung talent. Didn't manage to see quite all the acts performing, but managed to renew acquaintance with abovementioned and fellow-catters Micca, shantyfreak, Stallion, cranedriver, sussexcarole, derbyram, sylviaN, p.t., banjiman and all too briefly captain birdseye. Along with non-catters (?) steve & helen and monkeys fist. Just couldn't catch everyone I wanted to! Ross - I think our paths must have crossed too! And like you I noticed problems with noisy punters at the Lancaster (esp during parts of the singaround - although ) and the Merchant (mid afternoon). Micca - will PM. I too was sad to have missed that new production on the Sunday. Where's it next being performed, does anyone know? Congrats to the Organiser, and roll on Force 11. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Charley Noble Date: 26 Jul 09 - 07:59 PM Thanks so much for the reports! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Leadfingers Date: 26 Jul 09 - 08:07 PM Having met assorted Schatz's at Getaway , I wish I could have made at least one of their gigs ! The Seafest sounds like good fun !! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 27 Jul 09 - 04:00 AM Superb weekend all round. Great to catch up with so many old friends (too many to mention) and meet some new one's. Especially good to catch up with our transatlantic friends; Deb C, Ken and Barry. (Thanks Ken & Barry for making the effort to get to out Black Swan gig on Thursday as well). Highlights? Playing the main stage with Blind Summat! to a really good reception, Wendy managing to get pretty much all of the patrons of the very tough Lancaster singing and listening (Deb C's Hen Party had left by then!), Ken & Barry's sets (they are really quite superb at what they do) and the impromptu mass sing on the West Pier after the offical events had finished (with Keith Kendrick & Sylvia Needham, Steve Dawes & Helen Pitt, Ken & Barry, Wendy Arrowsmith etc and a few drunken Scarborough residents!), I just shut up and listened, the harmonies were devastating. Can't wait for next year. Paul Arrowsmith |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: jacqui.c Date: 27 Jul 09 - 04:58 AM I got back to Newark last night at about 10.30, totally exhausted, but very happy. So much good music and friends to hang out with. Many thanks to Stallion for arranging for me to have a bed for the night making sure I didn't get into any mischief! Barry and Ken were brilliant and I'll second the compliments about Deb Cowan. I saw two of Carole and Andrew's sets - superb as usual. I was there to witness Dick Miles and the hen party - he handled it so well but it was a relief when they left - one of them got a bit irritated when I put my finger to my lips as she wanted to talk to me through Dick's singing. The real highlight, for me, was joining a group for dinner on Saturday night that included Hughie Jones, late of the Spinners and now a wonderful performer in his own right. The Spinners were responsible for my discovery of folk music so that was quite an event. I am so glad I got a weekend pass for this one. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 27 Jul 09 - 12:45 PM oh Jacqui, Stephanie says she has fallen in love with Kendal's music and she says don't hesitate to call and stay again. Pete |

Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: GUEST,Helen Pitt Date: 28 Jul 09 - 03:38 PM Thoroughly enjoyed Seafest. The weather held (mostly) fair. A rare treat! And as always, we met up with many friends and heard some wonderful songs. Too many of both to mention individually! Steve & I had some really good gigs in various pubs . . . and I'd like to say a very big thank you to Debra Cowan for so generously inviting me to share one of her spots, and for the excellent songs she brought to our workshop on 'songs of women and the sea.' I hope we might get the chance to repeat the experience sometime. She is one of my favourite performers, and a pleasure to sing with. It was great to meet Barry & Ken as well. I do hope you get back over next year. I'll be looking out for you. Seafest seems to gain strength with every year. Well done to Richard & Jeanette. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 28 Jul 09 - 07:34 PM hello all, have just returned home, wed 29 july 00 14. I had a lovely gig at Coatham Mundeville. Ross, the play went well,Old Scarth excelled himself despite his gout, and despite having his straw hat snatched off his head,by the b#### director, who claimed it wasnt period, surely victorian shipping agents had straw hats?. Seriously, the music was good, and the children did well, particularly the dancing, perhaps the director should have worked harder on their voice projection, but it was a good effort. it was a pleasure to meet all the other mudcatters, thanks to Barry Finn for his help with the hen party. the spot I enjoyed playing most was on the main stage, and my spots in the leeds arms, which also went well. sorry,I did not enjoy the Lancaster[awful acoustics, among other things] I really enjoyed Finn and Haddies spot in the Sea Cadets Hall[what wonderful acoustics],and everyone else I got time to see. overall a good festival.Dick Miles |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ross Campbell Date: 28 Jul 09 - 08:24 PM Dick I'm sure Victorian shipping agents had sufficient standing in the community to wear what the **** headgear they liked - probably with spats, white trousers, stripy blazer and coloured neckerchief - but maybe somebody with a name like Scarth would tend to something more severe? Bowler hat, definitely. Ross |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Barry Finn Date: 28 Jul 09 - 09:20 PM We (Ken & I) had a wonderfully fantastic time. Thanks Richard & Jeanette for inviting us & for making us so comfortable & the warm welcomes when it was only our first meeting. The festival was great, so friendly & inviting & we were made to feel as if we were regulars & not first time nervous virgins. SPECIAL THANKS TO Peter of 2 Black Sheep & a Stallion for bringing us in under with his wing & a prayer, (it was a close call at customs, they have no sense of humor) & his hosting us & his just all around general support, we wouldn't been there without you. And thanks to Paul & Wendy Arrowsmith for just being the friendly & talented people that you are, we love you, it was our delight to be at the Black Swan as your audience & to be chumming with you guys for the weekend. It was a treat to meet up & hear Dick Miles too. I just knew I love meeting him. Killing the hen party for Dick was a bloody pleasure but he had them by their tail feathers anyway & they loved it, good thing they couldn't stay longer. A big surprise was seeing a Schooner Adventure on Steve from Gloucester, USA as Finn & Haddie showed up for a Yankee Song's workshop, he & his wife were supposed to be in Ireland, thanks for dropping in. Meeting & hearing Helen Pitt & Steve Dawes was a great treat & delight, we hit it off right, right from the start, wonderful & talented folks. Another treat was meeting up with Ross Campbell after all that's been posted on the Merchant sailor's songs thread by him, sorry I was out of voice by the time you got CW-9. Seeing Deb C was like old home days, I had just seen her less than a week earlier, she's always a treat. Micc, where'd ya go? I got to see you at the song compitation which we couldn't stay for (submitted a song right fro m finishing a spot, only to rush out the door to another spot. We got to wink at each other & that was that, wish we had a bit more time together, next time! Oh, lost in that song compitation but it at least got enough praise from one judge to get the very strong singing Armstrongs Patent that she was traaveling with to ask for a recording of it. I know I'm missing out on some folks here but everyone was so wonderfull that I can no longer keep track. What a wonderfull & delightfull time, thanks to all Jacqui, I'm tickled that you got to have dinner with "Huey your Hero", wasn't it something? Barry |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ross Campbell Date: 28 Jul 09 - 09:57 PM CW-9 came out fine, Barry. Many thanks for that. It was great to see (and hear) you both. Ross |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: DebC Date: 29 Jul 09 - 04:34 AM It's just lovely to read all the wonderful comments about Seafest. I had a fantastic time and for me, it had been a solid four years since I had done a maritime event in the UK. It was at the Lancaster Maritime Festival that I got to know Keith, Sylvia, Steve, Helen, Dick, Hughie and others. Many of these fine musicians have become dear, dear friends and I always enjoy their company and their music when I am over. It was also great to meet and have a chat with Ross. I didn't get to meet Micca, but I was so happy to see my birthday sister, jacqui.c come into the Anchorage Club on Sunday afternoon. Mudcat was well represented! Barry lives about an hour north of me in the States and I find it funny that I came 3000 miles to see him. He and Ken were a huge success and it looks like they'll be putting on their traveling shoes again over here. It was also great to finally meet Paul and Wendy and to hear Wendy and the the band, Blind Summat. Great stuff!! Many thanks to Richard and Jeanette Grainger (and all the hardworking volunteers) for all the work that goes into a festival such as Seafest. A highlight for me was getting to hear Hughie Jones again. I also enjoyed the impromptu singaround with Bob Fortune, John Lawson and a couple of other Endeavour Shanteymen on Sunday afternoon in the Sub-Aqua Club. I am finding that music sure does help to build bridges. And with the Seafest, I am finding that I've got a few more in my pocket :-) I love my job. Now to get over this #$^%#@ cold and get ready for Broadstairs. Debra Cowan |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 29 Jul 09 - 10:38 AM well ,yes ,Ross,it would have been nice if she could have provided a Bowler hat,and been more polite, but the play was good, the children did really well. on the subject of the hen party, one of them insisted on slipping me a tip,so it clearly meant something for them anyway, thanks to Richard and Jeanettefor a great festival. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 29 Jul 09 - 06:13 PM the songwriting competition, winner was Jim Radford, second was Penni Mclaren Walker third was Adrian O, Congratulations to all. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Ken Schatz Date: 29 Jul 09 - 11:02 PM Home again, jiggety-jig! Wow, thank you everybody for the very kind words! I wish I could have continued on with Barry to Bull Bay and Beyond, but alas, I had to come back to work. Scarborough was really a treat - the people couldn't have been nicer, and it was fantastic to meet and reconnect with a host of excellent singers and friends. Particular thanks to Peter and his wonderful family, and Carole and Andrew for taking such great care of us. Two highlights for me: the York City Walls and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct - whew! Super singers and performers are Carole and Andrew, too. Thank you also very much especially to Two Black Sheep and a Stallion, everyone at the Black Swan Folk Club, Paul and Wendy (new CD!) and all of Blind Summat!, to Richard and Jeanette Grainger, Helen Pitt and Steve Dawes, Les Pirates (woo!), Hughie Jones, Dick Miles (nice work with the hens, especially), and to Ken and Jan Lardner at The Chantey Cabin. Thank you all a lot for your support - it was a real treat to meet and sing with all of you, and yes, let's do more! DebC, great to sing and catch up with you, and thank you! Expect a call... Jacqui, a pleasure as always, and Micca, great to see you, even briefly! Thanks more to all who joined in singing on the pier after the fireworks on Saturday and to all who took over the Leeds Arms on Sunday night. That's the stuff, right there. And a big thank you to Barry. It is a real privilege to learn from and sing with you, boss. More, please!* Thanks and best wishes to Neil, too. Travel safe, represent, and say hi to Mainbrace, Mike, Roy and Tony! (Hope nobody minds, I think I'll post this in the Ken and Barry Tour thread too.) *Finn and Haddie are going to be at the Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Folk Festival in September. Everybody mark your calendars! Cheers, Ken |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Shantyfreak Date: 30 Jul 09 - 01:59 PM I know it's a bit late but I just wanted to add my thanks to all involved with the fun and festivity at Scarborough, especially the hard-working volunteer at the barrier by the lights. I don't know how many times I had to ask for directions to the venues (and I used to live in Scarborough!!). I only managed the Saturday but what a day. For me the highlight was my first sight/hearing of the ersatz Finn and Haddie (even the substitute was great). What a way to start my day listening to these two guys. Fine songs, good patter and very patient and informative (even coping with Dick's questions in the Sea Cadet hut. They must have been good because this "tightest-tyke" actually bought a CD (thanks Ken and Jan). I also enjoyed Monkey's Fist, Dick Miles, Debra Cowan etc etc etc plus chatting to old friends. This has been my only Maritime do this year I must be slipping. TTFN Jim |

Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 31 Jul 09 - 11:29 AM Charley,I am pleased to hear it. I would thank him whoever he was. kind words are always more appreciated than coronets as far as I am concerned. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Shantyfreak Date: 01 Aug 09 - 11:13 AM Captain Birdseye. I must thank you not only for a great set on the main stage but for asking the questions I was too timid to voice myself in The sea cadet hut LOL. Also you were the first person apart from Jan and Ken, to say hello to me at Scarborough!! Charlie I'm afraid that should soon read "former member of the Shellbacks" as, after Hull, we are disbanding. BUT remember the phoenix. TTFN both Jim |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 02 Aug 09 - 08:34 AM I thought the new venue the sub aqua club, was an improvement on the leeds hotel, many of the members were genuinely interested. I saw Hughie Jones do a good spot there, lets hope the venue is available next year.Dick Miles |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 02 Aug 09 - 01:24 PM The only problem was it only had fizzy beer |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 02 Aug 09 - 01:29 PM ah well,I was on the soda water,as I was suffering from gout,[so Ididnt notice. but if I had been drinking beer,I would have had a quick one[next door] in the Leeds arms, either before or after. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 02 Aug 09 - 02:25 PM I slipped between the rwo with the beer! but I did feel a little guilty! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 03 Aug 09 - 07:49 AM 100,LEADFINGERS where art thou. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Blowzabella Date: 03 Aug 09 - 07:57 AM So you should, stallion - it is people doing that sort of thing that ticks off venue managers and makes them think twice about offering their facilities to festivals. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 03 Aug 09 - 10:02 AM both places were busy ,they are also right next door to each other. both places were on the festival programme. both places were busier because of the festival,my approach would be [if I had been drinking alcohol],to have an overpriced soda water[it was twice the price of the Lancaster]in the sub aqua club, then have a pint afterwards in the Leeds arms. I think the sub aqua club would have been much quieter, trade wise without the festival,so while I can see their point of view over that, there is another way of looking at it :that sort of attitude by publicans,is of the variety of cutting off the nose to spite the face,[imo] if everyone did it it would be a problem,if only one person does it its hardly a problem. of course another alternative would be for the sub aqua club to get a barrel of decent ale for the festival. the main problem is the bringing the beer in to the pub,I am sure no one can object to anyone going in to the leeds, and having a pint, and then going next door to perform.but if the sub aqua club wants more trade, they are not going to get it by not allowing the festival,on the premises ,but they will get it by putting on a decent pint. it is called being competitive. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 03 Aug 09 - 01:03 PM It wasn't done on purpose, I was with Barry & Ken and they were in one venue and had to dash next door to the other and i had thre quarters of a pint, they hadn't realised they were on and thankfully it was only next door. I didn't keep going back and forth! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Charley Noble Date: 03 Aug 09 - 04:48 PM Peter- It was a good thing that you were guiding Barry and Ken. No telling where they might have ended up without your sober assistance. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 03 Aug 09 - 05:39 PM are you taking the p*ss Charley! |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 04 Aug 09 - 07:00 AM Stallion,I see you were doing extra spots,as well as Two black sheep and a Stallion,Good on you. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 04 Aug 09 - 07:05 AM No not me personally, i was acting as guide for Barry and Ken, I was born and bred in scarborough, getting them from venue to venue when we were not on ourselves |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 04 Aug 09 - 07:18 AM thats very handy, I have been going to Scarborough for several years, and didnt realise, until this year there was a quick short cut from the leeds arms to the Sea Cadets hall. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 04 Aug 09 - 03:10 PM our school was just a couple of hundered yards from the harbour (it's houses now!) we spent all our time playing chase through the bolts and castle dykes |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: The Sandman Date: 04 Aug 09 - 03:41 PM So were your family involved in fishing? |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 04 Aug 09 - 05:53 PM My Mothers family came from the music hall, silent picture (piano) and came to Scarboro as a Pierot on the beach shows, Uncle harry married Edie (Edith) Bayes, the Bayes were, and still are, rooted into the fishing community. my sister married into the Owenson family who, from 1896, were the Punch and Judy men in scarborough, the tradition was passed on to me twenty years ago althougfh I have never actually done it scarborough. My Fathers family were laterly farm labourers although we are decended from ughtred, one was knighted on the field of Agincourt and another was a Pirate and an associate of Drake. OOOps too much information. I did work in the bar of Golden Ball when I was a puppy and knew most (certainly all the dinking fisher families)of the fishing families. AAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhh so much change |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Blowzabella Date: 05 Aug 09 - 05:23 AM Being as how you're so rooted in Scarborough, then, stallion, you're probably one of the few people who could get away with nipping from one bar to another with a pint then |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Banjiman Date: 05 Aug 09 - 05:28 AM ..... especially with that mad look in his eye! Are you guys going to keep this discussion going until next years Seafest? I hope so. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 05 Aug 09 - 01:03 PM Time was I knew everyone, not now, I think the Sub Aqua club may not be bothered about the beers, they maay be in mourning, they may have lost a couple of their divers yesterday. |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Barry Finn Date: 06 Aug 09 - 07:52 PM It was all my fault, I was the one that kept him hopping from bar to bar. No sooner did he get a drink & sit when I'd remember to look at the schedule & find that we were due next door or up the street or across the damn hill. We (Ken & I) entered a song contest. We finished up one gig to waddle (I was waddling not them) up some God foresaken gothic stairway or hill to the Sea Scouts club house or something then sing the song (thankfully Richard squeezed us in) only to have Pete guide us to the next spot with oonly a breather in between. Bewteen all the man's unning I doubt if he drank more than a couple drops per glass anyway. Speaking of the "Punch & Judy" act, Peter will have to tell you about his puppet, it the same one was passed down to him from, well he'll tell you cus I might be streching it a bit but the puppet was classic & Pete makes a lovely sounding Punch. And again another thanks to Pete would stood in as our "third" on a few songs, espically "Come Down You Bunch of Roses" where it's done in 3 part harmony so there were a few that we couldn't have dmne with out you. I'm just home & am still glowing at what a wonderful time & we had in being a part of it & meeting up with others that had a hand in making it oh so much fun Thanks o you all Barry Deb C has to say a few words about her traveling fold up guitar that has a wonderful sound to it |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Aug 09 - 08:46 PM Barry- It's reassuring to hear that you are back home. I'm glad your abductors were willing to release you for the $997 I was able to collect from your admirers. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Scarboro seafest From: stallion Date: 07 Aug 09 - 03:25 AM Barry - Ken the pleasure was all mine, it was hard not to join in! Jo and i miss you boys it was far too short a trip, well at least our end was, there is so much more to see and hear. The Challenge, laid down by Banjiman, is to keep this thread going until next years festival, game on! Thanks for all the wonderful music and memories boys and look forward to catching up in the not too distant future |
