Subject: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Charley Noble Date: 21 Jul 09 - 08:44 PM I'm shocked that no one has started a thread on John Barry (no relation to Dave Barry), the man principally responsible for marketing WD-40 to you and the rest of the world. Here's the basic story: click here for story I wonder if Mr. Barry was buried in a dark blue casket with yellow highlights. WD-40's name stood for a "water displacement," a formula worked out on the 40th try. I never realized that this useful product was originally a by-product of the space program, designed to protect nose cones of Atlas rockets! No wonder it does such a great job making locks function in freezing temperatures, not to mention loosening lug nuts on my boat trailer wheels after they've been corroded by salt water. It will even cure a hang-over! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Alice Date: 21 Jul 09 - 10:28 PM WD-40 and duct tape how did we ever live without it |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Stilly River Sage Date: 22 Jul 09 - 02:04 AM Alice beat me to it. WD-40 for if it's stuck together, duct tape for it it needs sticking together. People need to remember, though, that WD-40 is a cleaner, not a lubricant. Anyway, RIP, Mr. Barry. You done good. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Backwoodsman Date: 22 Jul 09 - 02:41 AM "People need to remember, though, that WD-40 is a cleaner, not a lubricant" Strictly, it's a Water Displacer, SRS! And 40 is the 40th recipe they tried, which was successful - the previous 39 were not. (According to a telly program I watched a little while back). Apologies for the pedantry! :-) :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Jul 09 - 03:55 AM Sorry about his passing, but basically, it's crap. LPS-One A similar product having none of the drawbacks of WD and infinitely better on every level. You will never use WD again. ANd if you want an even stronger penetrant, use LPS-Two. Pack your boat trailer bearings with LPS-3 grease and you'll never have to do it again. LPS is a GREAT product! Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: kendall Date: 22 Jul 09 - 05:27 AM Did you hear about the poor guy who was trying to invent a successful soft drink? He ran out of money and gave up at 6 Up. |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Rasener Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:21 AM Blimey I thought you meant this person, in which case it should have been up in the music section. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn1GArGX8PY RIP the other John Barry |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:41 AM No Kendall, I missed that......Might have been good though! You bever know til you taste them do you. Sometimes they don't go down so well. Like I had this friend who tried to drink Canada Dry. He almost succeeded. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Backwoodsman Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:55 AM LOL! |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jul 09 - 08:23 AM It is an amazing story how this product caught on. And, yes, maybe I'll give LSD, errrr, I mean LPS, a try. I wonder if it will help keep my banjo strings in tune longer... Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: olddude Date: 22 Jul 09 - 08:30 AM Here is a secret, keep it to yourself ok ... fishing for salmon or lake trout, give you lure a little shot of WD-40 for whatever reason you will catch twice as many fish .. it really works better than the fish sent spray stuff. |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: gnu Date: 22 Jul 09 - 02:00 PM LURE? You did mean FLY, right? |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: olddude Date: 22 Jul 09 - 03:14 PM No my friend really never tried it on a fly, spray your KO wobbler or Cleo (those are my favorites on Lake Erie) with WD-40 give it a shot I never believed it until we tried it, I couldn't believe how they hit on the lure with it ... go figure fish huh |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: olddude Date: 22 Jul 09 - 03:23 PM For my dry flies I have all the orvis stuff but what I normally use to keep them floating is either some beeswax or even good old vaseline petroleum jelly. Much cheaper and works better I think. I caught a lot of fish using both. However you have given me a thought on using WD-40 on em. Never tried it ... if it works on lures .. why not |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: gnu Date: 22 Jul 09 - 03:26 PM Oh my. If you used a lure to catch a salmon here, you would lose your fishing gear, your truck, your firstborn child... and Ted Williams would come back from the grave an beat you with a 22 ounce Slugger. |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: olddude Date: 22 Jul 09 - 07:40 PM wow, not in lake Erie, we can use anything but dy-knee-mite |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Jul 09 - 11:30 PM I understand that it also has a prophylactic effect when sprayed... But some people also experience the undesirable side effect of having an erection for more than 4 hours...If so immediately call your family doctor or quality control engineer, or post your problem on a Mudcat thread. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: olddude Date: 23 Jul 09 - 12:41 AM LOL thats a good one |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: GUEST,Edthefolkie Date: 23 Jul 09 - 04:37 PM About 20 years ago I used to think WD-40 was the best thing since sliced bread, because it brought my wife's recalcitrant Citroens (Dyane and 2CV) to life on a damp morning when she was on early shift, enabling me to go back indoors and have a nice cup of tea. The alternative was using the supplied starting handle for around 10 minutes, maybe with the aid of a hair dryer. But what they don't tell you is that WD-40 then attracts filthy gloop all over the plugs, coil etc and after a while makes the problem worse. Eventually I discovered NGK plugs which made grazed knuckles and bruised wrists a thing of the past. Oh sorry, friends in the States - maybe I ought to explain that said "cars" were designed by the thrifty French after WWII, utilising left over Junkers 52s for bodywork and flat twin air-cooled concrete mixer engines! |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Jim Dixon Date: 23 Jul 09 - 08:21 PM I thought this thread was going to be about an addict who snorted WD-40 until he died of an overdose. |
Subject: RE: BS: OBIT: WD-40 Ex-Head From: Charley Noble Date: 24 Jul 09 - 09:42 AM I love these stories! And, Jim, that would be a perfectly plausible interpretation of what to expect from the thread title, and we may yet provoke an appropriate revelation. Only time will tell! I wonder if there is any truth to the rumors that WD-40 reduces the symptoms of rheumatism when sprayed directly on the offending joint? Cheerily, Charley Noble |
