So far we have confirmed Jon Bartlett & Rika Ruebsaat, Joy Bennett & Chris Koldewey, Pete the Spy, Ed Norman, Molly Andrews, and Steve Cormier, and we're working on a couple more" |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: David Ingerson Date: 22 Jul 09 - 03:27 PM In response to Jon from the other thread: Thanks for your generous welcome. You are too kind. The treat will really be mine, hearing you again and so many other stellar singers. Looking forward to it with great anticipation. When will the registration form be available? Or am I missing something on the FSGW site. I'm hoping to get my plane tickets today or tomorrow and don't want to blow it with the reg form. Cheers, David |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Charlie Baum Date: 23 Jul 09 - 08:32 AM The registration form will probably be ready in a week or so. FIrst it needs to get printed in the FSGW newsletter, which has gone to the printer. There's a .pdf version which then becomes available on-line to FSGW members, and we can extract the Getaway Registration form from there. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: artbrooks Date: 23 Jul 09 - 08:34 AM Not this year...too much else going on. Maybe next time. |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: kendall Date: 24 Jul 09 - 05:56 AM For me, there is nothing more important than the Getaway. I just got a picture of me on my hands and knees crawling down the NJ pike with my Taylor on my back and Jacqui making sure I'm crawling on the left side of the road. |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Fortunato Date: 25 Jul 09 - 06:48 PM Hey Kendall, old man, looking forward to picking with you at the Getaway, and I think you'd be better off driving than crawling, easier on the fingers. Think of your dignity, sir. |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: olddude Date: 25 Jul 09 - 07:18 PM What is a getaway? |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Fortunato Date: 25 Jul 09 - 07:44 PM Well, oldude, it's like this. For a loooonnng time the Folklore Society of Greater Washington has been retreating to a park/camp for a long weekend of workshops and mini-concerts. We show up at the camp or park on Friday night for a pot luck and sing songs and play instruments. On Saturday and Sunday there are workshops all day, interspaced with mini concerts by invited guests. They take place in various locations, outside weather permitting. there's lunch and more music. Then dinner and a evening concert (sign up to play a song) Sunday is the same, and some folks leave Sunday and some on Monday morning. Currently the Getaway is held at a camp in Maryland by a lovely bay with sailboats and pretty nice cabins with clean showers and it's very nice. It's a reunion and a festival and a retreat all rolled into one. No paid performers, but some are invited to come for free to be special guests. Over the years we've had some excellent performances and always folks who don't often play out get a chance to perform. The workshop ideas as you see come from all of us and represent our interest to a great extent. It's worth the price of admission. Mostly people who come once come again. I've been going since the 70's, though not consecutively like Bill Day. It's fun event and I look forward to it. cheers chance |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: olddude Date: 26 Jul 09 - 09:37 AM chance, thank you, now I understand. what a wonderful idea my friend |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Micca Date: 26 Jul 09 - 11:08 AM oldude Chance omitted to mention there is NO "audience" as such, everyone seems to be a performer or certainly a participant, I dont think we have anything quite like it in the UK!! It is Habit forming however, and a wonderful expierience, BTW that "lovely bay with sailboats" Chance casually mentioned is Chesapeake bay!!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Severn Date: 26 Jul 09 - 11:09 AM Lots of wonderful ideas about, olddude, but this one for years running never fails to reach fruition and become a reality to remember. So, save your pennies, take an extra mortgage on the farm if needs be, follow instructions and directions as posted and BE THERE! Lots of good music by friends and strangers and a chance to put faces on and shake hands with a lot of folks who exist only on the printed page to you, as yet. |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Lonesome EJ Date: 26 Jul 09 - 10:50 PM and Chance's Country Music workshop is always a highlight, olddude. |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Janie Date: 27 Jul 09 - 12:17 AM Olddude, it is a weekend of participatory music, fellowship and pure magic. The FSGW folks have been doing this for many, many years. A number of them either post regularly on Mudcat or make good use of Mudcat and digitrad resources, and a number of years ago began inviting Mudcat participants to attend. Bless them, and I am forever grateful for this weekend that is the highlight of my year. It feeds the soul. Come if you can! |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: KT Date: 27 Jul 09 - 02:04 AM uh-oh.....here it comes again......that strange feeling I get every year at this time...a mixture of longing, dreaming, wishing, plotting, and computing....It comes and goes until the end of Getaway season. Go, Old Dude. You won't regret it! If I recall, you hail from my old stomping grounds - a mere hop, skip and a jump! |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: beardedbruce Date: 27 Jul 09 - 09:41 AM from a past Getaway... Sonnet 03/11/07 MLXV To absent friends and lost loves let us drink, Recalling smiles and times that all once shared. On those no longer near let us now think, To bring back reasons that for them we cared. Some are not here, yet still remain, within The songs and words they left behind. And some Are in our souls, when hopes or dreams begin: A part of what each of us have become. To those apart let us now raise a glass And take a moment to give thanks for all That we from others have ourselves received. The world's a school, and our lives just a class In playing well with others. Can we call It more? Are we by our egos deceived? |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Fortunato Date: 27 Jul 09 - 09:50 AM As Bruce suggests, we raise a toast to absent friends at our singaround on Thursday night at 8:00pm EST. |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Bobert Date: 12 Aug 09 - 08:29 PM This reminds me... I'll be lookin' for band-mates for the Saturday night concert.... EJ is in allready on harmonica... Last year I had Leadfingers but he ain't gonna be here this year... I was kinda hopin' that KT would make it and we'd give it another try... Then again, if it didn't and I had to fire her again, that would break my poor ol' hillbilly heart... Sniff... So ol' Bobert accepting applications now... No, no dancin' girls at the Saturday concert... (Why not, Boberdz???) Well, sheet fire... Why the heck not??? Okay, maybe a few hotties wouldn't hurt... Of course I'll have to do somethin' a little more dance-able then I did last year but, hey... Okay, ladies... You know who you are and you know the what is expected... I bring the feathers... B~ |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Janie Date: 12 Aug 09 - 08:51 PM Well, thanks Amos....a real gentleman is always a good liar when chivalry calls for it. And, well.... country blues....or a little Jazzy blues....or a little bluesy sounding Gospel..... Now that I think about about my voice, your resonator guitar and Mississippi Stomp blues, and....the question of singing on pitch and in key, and.... I'll be glad to wave peacock feathers from the middle row of chairs:>) |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Janie Date: 12 Aug 09 - 09:01 PM Tami, You could always get "sick".....Sick of missing the Getaway:) |

Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Micca Date: 12 Aug 09 - 11:07 PM I have signed in, done my Paypal stuff, and scrolled my nurd all in one go! |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: ranger1 Date: 12 Aug 09 - 11:35 PM Micca, I don't even want to know what scrolling your nurd is. Alas, all you fine people, I have become accustomed to the steady paycheck and health insurance and I am also cursed with a sense of reponsibility. At that point in the fall, both parking lots at the park fill and cars are lined up down into the center of town and there are only four of us to handle things. I would be incredibly pissed off if someone skipped off to go have fun and left me with that, so I am not about to do the same to my co-workers. I don't suppose there are any plans in the future to have the Getaway occur at a later date? |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Fortunato Date: 12 Aug 09 - 11:43 PM Scrolled your nurd? Gods, that's disgusting. You go wash your hands you nasty boy... Hey Kendall they're giving us numbers now, in case we forget our names... |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: My guru always said Date: 13 Aug 09 - 03:37 AM Well, I think I've got Richard & me signed up & paid for (with the help of Charlie & Dick), though I didn't notice what our ID's were, it was all so exciting!!! Don't you worry about our Micca, I'll be keeping a firm eye on him this year *hehehe* Really looking forward to meeting & hearing you guys! When we get back to the UK afterwards I'll reread this thread & I might be able to understand more of what goes on. But please, I don't want to know about scrolling nurds..... |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Bill D Date: 13 Aug 09 - 12:47 PM Ah, Tami...we HAD the Getaway 'later' for a few years, and people froze. The traditional date for many years was Columbus day weekend, back when it was still a holiday, so some could have Monday off and not have to leave on Sunday afternoon. The weather in early October gives us about a 79.421% chance of being able to sing & sit OUTSIDE. (Last year was wonderful!) When it was in Nov., it conflicted with other events.....*sigh*...if we wait till it's convenient for everyone, we'd never have it. We truly wish it were all easier. |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Lonesome EJ Date: 13 Aug 09 - 01:12 PM Amos, Leadfingers, Bobert, and other members of the Peace Shack Blues Band...maybe we should work up a tune or two this year w Janie singing lead? |
Subject: RE: Getaway09 - other stuff than programming From: Amos Date: 13 Aug 09 - 02:26 PM Be aware of the strenuous parking enforcement. A |
