Let's not forget to include the instrumentals, such as: "Telstar" by the Ventures and "Out Of Limits" by the Marketts. The latter was originally released as "Outer Limits" until the TV network broadcasting the series claimed propriatary use of the name.

Wow! Thanks to Guest L Fletcher for reviving this thread after years of dormancy!

As I began reading the original 1999 messages, I was wondering whether the Holy Modal Rounders' "Mr. Spaceman" was the same as the Byrds' song of the same name, but as read through the thread I learned that -- as a parody of "Mr. Bass Man" -- it was not.

"Mr. Bass Man" was a novelty rock 'n' roll song (late '50s/early 60s) poking fun at the lower-register scat singing characteristic of the "doo-wop" group vocal style. Quotes from the Rounder's lyrics make it plain that their "Mr. Spaceman" followed the "Bass Man" tune. The Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman" was a completely different and presumably original tune, a simple three-chord country-style ditty:

Hey, Mr. Spaceman
Won't you please take me along / I won't do anything wrong
Please, Mr. Spaceman
Won't you please take me along / for a ride.

Another Byrds tune that might be appropriate, although much less "folk"-style musically, is "Eight Miles High," notable for the instrumental intro where McGuinn plays a transcription of a free-jazz saxophone solo (Ornette Coleman?) on the electric twelve-string.

I'm not up on my astrophysics, so I'm not sure if an altitude of 8 miles puts you in space or just the outer stratosphere. In any case, I think the song is about psychological rather than astronomical "space."

Another space-related fave of mine, which might be a bit obscure for most of you, is "UFOs Exactly" by Ed Volker of the Radiators. I still think of the Rads as a strictly local New Orleans band, but after 25 years of touring they have built up an national and even international "cult" following, so maybe they're not totally unknown to all of you out there in the wider world above sea level.

I know the UFO tune ("UFOs Exactly / Flyin' over a hot dog stand..") from live performance, dating back *more* than 25 years to when half of the present-day band performed as the Rhapsodisers. They've continued to play it on and off over the years, and I figure it's probably on one of their earlier albums.

PS to Alan C: Yes, I remember the "John Cameron Cameron" novelty records fondly. I also remember hearing a feature about them on (US) National Public radio a year or so ago, prompted by the release of a book by the crator's son.

There's also the early 20th century novelty song "Come Take a Trip in My Air Ship" which has been discussed and posted in the threads.

Another "newer" favorite has to be Pete Seeger's singing of "Martian Love Song" which is on his 1958 Gazette recording by Folkways Records; don't know if that one has been posted but with encouragement I might do that.

The fun Houston band called Flying Fish Sailors do a song called "The Wharton UFO." It's quite funny but I can't find the lyrics. Space aliens come to Wharton, TX and of course, Texans know what to do with illegal aliens... We put them to work mowing lawns and such. In one verse, the aliens are mowing the lawn but the owner doesn't like the job they're doing and says "don't make me make you stop levitating me..." OK, maybe I'm paraphrasing.

Two suggestions: one an early 20th c. novelty song called "Come Take a Trip in My Airship" (Ren Shields and George Evans), which you'll find in the Levy Collection here; the other is a novelty country-western ditty called "The Trucker and the UFO" by Brush Arbor. Don't exactly know where that one can be found without buying it on CD -- Truck Drivin' Man, for example.

Dan Hicks & His Acoustic Warriors have a song, the spoken introduction of which goes: "We'd like to do a song that has no problem with the belief in alien spacecraft, UFOs, and the possibility of an Earthling being able to maybe fly around a little bit. It's called 'Hell, I'd Go.' It features the fine vocalese of the Martianettes on this one."

This recording of it doesn't have the spoken bit, and appears to have the end of another song first.

There are two completely different "Beam Me Up Scotty" songs, one the Eric Bogle song, the other by Tom Rush.

Mojo Nixon recorded a song called "UFOs, Big Rigs, & BBQ"; and on a related note, with Jello Biafra on "Prairie Home Invasion" did the rewrite "Convoy In The Sky".

A few years ago, our Morris team was booked to do an interval spot at a festival ceilidh. When we got there, the audience seemed ominously small, but our musician remarked : "Don't worry, the party never starts till the Klingons arrive." Of course, Morris men aren't really like Klingons – well not much! – but sure enough, once we got there, more people started crowding in, and the evening became very enjoyable.

Eventually, a song grew from that seed crystal. At first I thought it would need a tune rather like the Admiral's song from HMS Pinafore (… "And now I am the ruler of the Queen's Navee!"), but our aforementioned musician sings it to a speeded up version of an old dance tune, "The Durham Rangers". This seems to work well, but feel free to experiment.

I'm looking for a song i heard back in the 1980's it was really like the X-Files era. It was a dance tune kinda industrial sounding.

The chorus was something like "You've got to believe me" it was about a UFO sighting or abduction or something. I don't know who did it. I'd love to hear it again.

Back in the 60's there was a song about a flying saucer and its occupant - a little green man. It has a Mexican flavor in the lyrics. I have tried over 40 years to locate its title. All I remember is the opening lines which go like this:

Went to the beach one sunny day
see a flying saucer in the bay
See my girl, she say stay away
she greet the little green man
aye yah yah yah yah.

He was little with two big green feet
both of them move to the cha cha beat.
