That is good news, Lynne.

Here's hoping that next year she can Trick or Treat as Lady Godiva.

For those who wanted to be updated on this, Alicia came out of hospital for a week yesterday after her first batch of chemo. She has no hair and may not leave the house. The girls don't yet know if they will be allowed to visit her or not.

The good news is that, before leaving hospital she had her bone-marrow tested and there is, at present, no sign of the leukemia.
The first round score is:
Alicia 1 leukemia 0

Next week she will go back in for the next blast of chemo.

Oh Alex, I'm so sorry. I don't know if I would cope with the loss of a child, but I guess you have no real choice.

Alicia has not yet read this thread. I'm wondering if I should perhaps copy and paste most of the messages so Shady can print them off and show them to her next week when she is briefly out of hospital. There was a number of other messages which, while sympathetic, I think may be tactless to show her at this point. If I do it that way people can say what they feel they need to and I can edit them if I think it necessary.

So sorry for your loss guest Alex. There is a handful of us on this forum who have lost children.

However, we try to keep "positive" thoughts flowing in these threads, especially as they may be viewed by the person (and family) to which they are dedicated.

If you have an interest in music, please visit above the BS section and join the forum. You might make some friends, and get comfort in both above and below the line discussions.

Maybe a moderator will, for Alica's sake, remove the post from guest_Alex and even this post with appropriate explanation?

All the best to Alicia and her family. I lost my youngest son, Grant, to this disease just over three years ago. He had been diagnosed with leukaemia at age 12. It was Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), that time round, and chemotherapy lasted for two + years. Three years later on it was AML. The doctors here said there was a 75% chance of complete recovery at his age. (The older you are the lower the chances for a complete cure, apparently) Unfortunately, at 16 plus, he turned out to be in the "25%" bracket.
I pray there will be a better outcome for Alicia.

Alex

Thanks again guys. I'm not sure if Shady has read all this yet. She's going to copy it into an e-mail to Alicia since they can't visit for a month now. I wasn't sure that sending her the link was necessarily a good idea. The stall/auction idea is a good one and I'll put it to Shades. There are aslso posibilities in the hat idea...perhaps we could build it up to a hat fashion show to raise money?

A friends' son was permitted by school (as an exception to usual rules) to be sponsored to shave his head - in support of his sick friend. He raised over £1000 and made so many more people aware of Camerons' illness and how medical treatment affected him. I'm sure friends will think of other less drastic things to be sponsored for. Even paying 50p or £1 and wearing a silly hat or headscarf for a school day - puts a smile on faces and money in the bank!

Villan, yes she is in UK. I will have a look at the link. Thank you. She does have her own appointed Macmillan nurse though, who is liasing with school and supporting her and her family.

I'm not sure if Shady knows what type it is...I'll ask her. She and all the friends are learning very quickly. Shady went to visit again last night but the treatment starts today and they won't be able to visit for a bit due to risks of infection. Alicia's father is going to sort her out a laptop and dongle (whatever that is!) so she can get on line and communicate with her friends that way.

Meanwhile the girls have spoken to their head of year about doing some fund-raising. Since they are all musical and performing sort of people it has been suggested that maybe they think about putting on a concert with the help of the school. Other things have also been suggested, such as a cake stall, various sponsored things etc.

MBSLynne, is this young lady in the UK?

If so, has anybody from CLIC Sargent got involved. They do a wonderful job supporting both the youngster and their family through this.

Recent news from PhysOrg:

Scientists have discovered a completely new route by which leukaemia develops, according to research published in Nature this weekend.

Scientists from the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge studied a gene called JAK2 which is faulty in many cases of leukaemia - but until now its role was not clear.

They discovered that if JAK2 is faulty, the cell's meticulously controlled message system 'short circuits'. As a result many genes are switched on and off inappropriately and a completely new cell signalling route by which leukaemia can develop is turned on.
The scientists found that the enzyme made by the JAK2 gene is also located inside the cell nucleus and plays an important role to control how genetic information is used by the cell. Previously it was only known to be located on the inner surface of cells - acting as a messenger between the outside of the cell and the cell's nucleus.
The team discovered that the JAK2 enzyme acts in the nucleus to switch on and off a number of genes. It does this by changing the structure of histones (the proteins that pack and protect DNA) and which control the behaviour of many genes. The garbled messages from the faulty JAK2 gene lead to mismanagement of histones which results in catastrophic effects on the workings of a cell.

Lead author Professor Tony Kouzarides of the Wellcome Trust/Cancer Research UK Gurdon Institute at the University of Cambridge said: "This is a completely new route by which cancer can develop. In this exciting research we have revealed new unidentified parts of the cell's messaging system which can become faulty and lead to leukaemia."

Perhaps this will lead to a solution.

Warm regards to Alicia and all who watch over her.

A

Well I just heard that she has the type which requires the six months of chemo not the two years. That's got to be good? I didn't even realise there were different sorts. They are to start the treatment immediately.

There are probably hundreds of different kinds of leukaemia known by now, and about as many different outcomes and appropriate kinds of treatment, ranging from "give up, nothing will work" to "no treatment is needed, you'll die of something else decades from now" - and in between, some kinds have very effective new treatments. It would help a lot for somebody to find out which she's got.

Here is a story. I hope it helps, and I send it with many hugs attached to it!

Friends of mine were walking home with their two children, a boy and a girl. This was after a h-u-g-e rain storm --- and the ground had turned into thick gooey mud. Every time they took a step forward, they fell back three steps.

They were afraid they would never get home.

The two kids put their heads together and thought hard about their situation. And they DID figure out a way out of the problem.

All three of them turned around --- and went in the opposite direction!!

They got back home faster than they ever had before!!

BE WELL QUICK...

It will bring a little bit of fast growing up to them; with the great good wishes and all of the medical advances Alicia will be able to share that with them.

WARNING - FOLLOWING MAY BE TOO SAD FOR SOME TO READ, RIGHT NOW -

When I was thirteen or fourteen, we lost a girl, Janie, in my school; this was near mid-1960s. I had known her in elementary school for a couple of years, then we moved on to different circles, but she was always there. Everyone at school loved her. She was ill off and on and we missed her. Then she couldn't come to school and the next thing we knew, we were threatening a sitdown in the halls of school if they didn't let us out for her funeral. They did and I believe it helped us to understand our own mortality a little bit, plus it helped to share our fears and sorrow. We would have traded all of that to have her back, though.

Thank goodness this does not have to be the case these days; treatments are so much better.

Sorry if this causes too much pain or fear.

I lost a niece to leukemia before treatment became so effective. In the intervening 30 years medical science has made great advances. Treatments are still pretty rough but the outlook much better. Things like hair loss are devastating for teenagers but thank God the outlook in the long run is so much brighter! With all of my best wishes,

Take heart that treating childhood leukemia has made the most progress of cures and remissions compared to other cancers.

In the old days leukemia seemed like a death sentence, but not anymore. After all the atmosheric testing in the 50's and 60's the rate of childhood leukemia went up 900%, an astonishing increase.

But today the incidence is very small and the treatments are excellent, effective and expensive.

Hugs all around but there are plenty of good solid reasons to be of good cheer and remain honestly positive.
