There are official warnings of 18" to 24" of snow coming Friday and Saturday but I have heard rumors supposedly coming from two different government sources that we could get up to 36"

I guess this applies to the Shenandoah valley points north also.

Are you prepared?

We are as prepared as we get. It seems like it's gonna be wet & heavy....which means traffic hassles and broken limbs. I've filled the bird feeders and have a plastic tarp to cover the car...(makes it a 'bit' easier to clean off later...

We have food and don't need to go out, since I am sure our Mid-Winter folk festival will be canceled.

(One year, about 20 years ago, we had to dig our way IN to the festival after a snow...but we held it, and folks came out. But for a number of years now, it has been in a county school, and when THEY decide 'schools are closed', the janitors don't come to work and anything scheduled for the buildings is off.)

A blizzard is more like 6 foot drifts in 2 hours.
I think we will get a foot of fluff over 8 hours.
At least I would prefer a dusting to a roof busting blizzard. opps did i spit?

From what I understand a blizzard designation is given when a storm qualifies on three points:

Velocity
Amount of snow
Temperature

I remember several years back when I was touring by train through the American midwest and on to Canada and back across that what they were calling a blizzard in the Chicago to Detroit region didn't qualify.

Washington Post:

nowmageddon: Snowstorm likely to be historic
Crippling accumulations over 1 to 2 feet may be common

* Winter Storm Warning Friday morning through Saturday evening *

It is hard to believe that we're about to see another storm like we saw in December -- usually a once in several year occurrence. But it's real and it's becoming increasingly likely that a historic event is in the cards. If you have any doubts, check out this afternoon's satellite shot showing amazing moisture feeds into what is already a gigantic system. The time is now to make final preparations as we are less than 24 hours out from the start.

FORECAST IN DETAIL

Through tonight: The calm before the monster storm continues as skies trend cloudier. Lows in the mid-to-upper 20s.

Tomorrow (Friday): We won't warm much with clouds and precipitation inbound. Look for highs in the mid 30s, falling back to and below freezing as snow gets underway by the late morning or early afternoon. By evening, snow should be falling at a moderate pace with at least 3-5" of accumulation common across the area and rates increasing into the night.

Dangerous weather: This will be a high-impact storm any way you cut it. Heavy wet snow will create difficult digging out conditions and may lead to numerous power outages. To minimize the risk of injury during digging, it is best to clear snow often. Wind and near-blizzard (or even blizzard) conditions may occur overnight Friday and into Saturday, Blizzard Warnings are already up to our east and we did have them issued in December. Be prepared to be stuck where you are for at least 24-48 hours, if not longer as suggested through a message delivered by the state of Virginia. And if all else fails, check out this Snopocalypse D.C. web site for further instructions.

Yeah, and I am purdy pissed off about it...

We just had 22 inches in Decemeber and it took me three intense days of tractor duty to dig out... The problem with where we are is that we are on the western side of the Blue Ridge at 1700 feet and when these things come in from the west we get hammered... The other problem is that our drive way is close to a half a mile long and narrow whyich means having to remove large depths of snow one front loader bucket at a time and backing up the hill and dumping the snow in the few places where it can be stashed... It amounts to hundreds and hundreds of buckets of snow... And my Kabota has no cab so it's cold and the snow just covers me and the tractor... But...

...I got beer and a little moonshine left... I got lots of firewood stacked up safe in the mudroom... Hopefully we won't lose electricity but I'll be fillin' the bath tub in the mornin' just in case we gotta have water for flushin' toilets, etc...

Worst part about all this is that I am supposed to close on the sale of the spec house I built down below a week from today... Ol' hillbilly really needs that to happen...

But, I guess we are ready... I've been thru these before... 31 inches back in the mountains of Wes Ginny...

But if it wants to go somewhere else that would suit me fine...

My weather watcher program says "heavy snow/wind". That still does not mean blizzard to me... I lived in Kansas, and have seen maybe 2 'blizzards', which was reserved for heavy snow coming at you sideways....

still, the system is supposed to be moving 'fast', so I supposed more wind than usual is possible.

(Oh...in Kansas, they didn't even say 'snow storm' unless there was a lot of snow and quite a bit of wind. Here, they call anything over 2 inches a 'storm'.)

I wish I could post my pics. We have had as much as 1.62m in less than 12 hours with wind since I had camera... worse before that when I was a lad... I think I recall. As a lad, I had to crawl out the back door, put on my snowshoes and shovel just so we could see out the front room window.

Now, that ain't as bad as I have seen pics of elsewhere, but 0.6m don't seem so bad. It's all what yer used to, I guess.... and prepared for, indeed.

Good luck!

Back in '79 here, I started out for work one morning, and couldn't push the screen door open....and this was under a porch! We had over 2 ft. that night, but all it was was a heavy snow where the system had developed right over us and sat there. There was 'some' wind, but nothing like a blizzard. The whole DC area was shut down for 2 days.

Fir the recond, when I do dig out I plan on findin' a weatherman and give him or her a piece of my mind!!!

Secondly, I prolly won't be around fir a while after tomorrow 'cause the snow will cover up the pudder-dish... Last time it was 4 days without pudder... The TV dish is biogger so I'm hopin' that I'll be able to get the Super Bowl on Sunday but, sheet fire, I might not even have 'lectricity...

But I got beer and some shine so I'll be fine...

Bobert, why don't you tie the house to that Kabota and just drag it nearer the road each winter?

Bobert, in Juneau there are a number of historical houses that were moved on skids on snow. They were pulled by phalanxes of mules. One three story house was pulled uphill 70 feet.

So Rap has an idea. Of course, you may find, in leafing out time, that you've lost your view...

I perfer Everclear with orange juice. I know there ain't no lead or methanol in it.

About $16 bucks for a fifth or $80 a gallon. 190 proof corn likker and no hangovers.

Only down side is it's legal and not so much fun.

I perfer blackberry brandy though for workin' outside in the snow. It keeps you warm somehow.

Any way, tie a rope from the back porch post to the barn and another to the outhouse you you won't get lost in a whiteout.

Somebody thinks there is a blizzard coming.

Winter storm, blizzard warnings for Delaware up to 24 inches of snow possible

A major winter storm developing over the Gulf of Mexico has the potential to dump enough snow to paralyze parts of the mid-Atlantic region this weekend -- including Delaware, forecasters say, with up to 24 inches possible in parts of the state.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday for New Castle County, the National Weather Service says. The service predicts 12 to 18 inches of snow upstate.

Quantcast

A blizzard warning is in effect in the same time frame for Kent and Sussex counties, where up to 24 inches of snow may accumulate combined with stiff winds that may produce whiteout conditions.

Sussex County emergency officials also warned there is a potential for coastal tidal flooding and residents should prepare by securing loose items.

The temperature tonight will drop to about 25, rising to the mid-30s on Friday. Precipitation may begin in the afternoon as rain or a mix of rain and snow, or a mix of snow and sleet, with little accumulation until it turns to all snow after 7 p.m.

Winds are expected to pick up around 1 a.m. Saturday. Gusts are expected to reach about 36 mph upstate on Saturday and 45 mph downstate during the day.

The temperature will drop to the upper 20s on Friday night and stay there through Saturday night, when it will drop into the mid-teens.

The Delaware Department of Transportation said this afternoon that crews will be out today and Friday pre-treating the roads in advance of the storm. These crews will be moving slowly and DelDOT asks motorists to allow plenty of distance around the vehicles.

We are about to be paralyzed

Virginia Declares State of Emergency Before Impending Blizzard

Northern and western parts of Virginia are expected to see well over a foot of snow beginning Friday morning, prompting Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to declare a state of emergency in advance of impending blizzard conditions.

McDonnell's Wednesday declaration authorizes state agencies to aid local governments in responding to storm conditions.

The purpose of the declaration is to allot extra preparation time for emergency and road management crews.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), 94 percent of the state snow removal budget has already been spent on earlier winter storms.

However, VDOT has an emergency reserve fund set up to serve as monetary back-up if future storms cause a need for more manpower and supplies.

VDOT wants people to know that despite budget concerns, road conditions will be first priority with this weekend's storm.

Residents are urged to stay off area roadways, with white-out conditions creating extremely hazardous travel conditions. High winds are also expected, with power outages a likely outcome.

Accumulation for this storm had the potential to match or exceed snowfall totals from the December mid-Atlantic blizzard.

The Washington, D.C. and surrounding metro areas are already very close to surpassing all-time winter snowfall records.

The function of declaring a state-wide declaration of emergency is to alert citizens that certain government processes, like postal services and schooling, may be suspended during a major weather or other emergency event.

Gumint agencies are also required to implement emergency preparation plans in response to the declaration.

"gusts" do not a blizzard make....try sustained winds of 50-60 MPH

It won't be fun in DC OR Delaware, but ask folks on the prairies of N. Dakota what a 'blizzard' is like.

In the United States, the National Weather Service defines a blizzard as sustained winds or frequent gusts reaching or exceeding 35 mph which lead to blowing snow and cause visibilities of 1/4 mile or less, lasting for at least 3 hours. Temperature is not taken into consideration when issuing a blizzard warning, but the nature of these storms is such that cold air is often present when the other criteria are met. Temperatures are generally below 32 °F.

According to Environment Canada, a winter storm must have winds of 25 mph or more, have snow or blowing snow, visibility less than 500 feet, a wind chill of less than −15 °F, and all of these conditions must last for 3 hours or more before the storm can be properly called a blizzard.

Many European countries, such as the UK, have a lower threshold: the Met Office defines a blizzard as "moderate or heavy snow" combined with a mean wind speed of 30 mph and visibility below 650 feet.

Meteorologists refer to blizzard-like conditions with no snow falling as a ground blizzard, because all the snow is already present at the surface of the earth and is simply being blown by high winds. Ground blizzards require large expanses of open and relatively flat land with a sufficient amount of accumulated and loosely packed, powdery snow to be blown around.

NOAA: The Sioux Falls Forecast Office issues a blizzard warning when the following conditions are expected to occur for 3 hours or more:

   1. Sustained wind speeds of 35 mph or more, or frequent gusts to 35 mph or greater;
   2. Considerable falling and/or blowing snow that reduces visibility frequently to 1/4 mile or less.

It's all relative, isn't it? What is a blizzard in D.C. is not as much as what is a blizzard in Wyoming or other places mentioned. Though when you consider the humidity of the eastern snow, the weight is more impressive than that in parts west!

I agree with Bill, though. In WY, it is the sustained winds which really do make the snow come at you sideways without let-up which is considered a blizzard.

On the other hand, a whiteout is a whiteout, so be careful!

Sorry, Rap, about yer wife gettin a second dose... Most winters we don't get squt in the way of snow... Guess we're havin' a catch-up year...

Been snowin' here since before light... I went out to get another 5 gallons of diesel fuel... They were sold out at the place I usually get it so I had to ride around a little to get it... They're callin' for 22 inches-plus here in Page County...

As for moving the house??? I don't think the basement wants to get dragged down the hill... Plus, half the drive way is cut into the side of the mountain and very narrow and one little slip and the house would become a gravity test...

As for Everclear??? Shine is shine and Everclear ain't shine...

Well, ol' Boberdz plan is to go out once there's about 4 inches of snow and plow what I can to both sides of the driveway and try to do that every 4 inches afterwards... The problem will be in that cut out spot on the mountain 'cause there ain't alot of places for the snow to go... Oughtta be interesting...

The Everclear Song by Roger Creager

Everyday in lunch in high school,
And all of my senior year,
I'd drink my Coca-Cola with a touch of everclear.
I never had to study math, science or history,
I'd have a chemical flashback to jog my memory.
In my junior year I swore I loved sweet Miss Sherrie-Ann,
One night I put some everclear in her Dr. Pepper can.
I thought it'd make her easy, but she took it pretty hard,
I took her home and rang her doorbell, left her lyin' in the yard.

Tequila dries me out, and beer just makes me fat.
Whiskey makes me nauseous, tell me who the hell needs that?
If you're thinkin' about drinkin', then the answer's crystal clear,
Its the invisible intoxicant....its called everclear.

I remember my church picnic in the spring of '89,
They had 4 fresh watermelon sliced right off the vine.
When they bowed their heads giving grace for the food,
Hey, I pulled out the bottle, and I soaked them melons good.
Well they never knew what hit 'em, when the potion went to work,
They had Grandma's doin' backflips, Grandpa's lookin' up their skirts.
They were singing Hallelujah and Willie Nelson songs,
Preacher said it was the best dang picnic,
That the baptists had ever thrown.

Tequila dries me out, and beer just makes me fat.
Whiskey makes me nauseous, tell me who the hell needs that?
If you're thinkin' about drinkin', then the answer's crystal clear,
Its the invisible intoxicant....its called everclear.

When I'm drinkin' everclear, I think I'm king of this whole world,
I'm bigger and badder than John Wayne and cooler than Steve Earle.
Until I wake up and I'm face down in the hall,
Hey, I'm completely naked, for a reason I can't recall.
Well I'm kinda, sorta thinkin' that maybe I met a chick,
'Cause there's perfume in the air, and there's lipstick on my neck.
Well I hope that she was pretty and I hope that she was kind,
Enough to leave my clothes somewhere they're easy to find.

Tequila dries me out, and beer just makes me fat.
Whiskey makes me nauseous; tell me who the hell needs that?
If you're thinkin' about drinkin', then the answer's crystal clear,
It's the invisible intoxicant....its called everclear.

One blizzard in North Dakota has never been forgotten by my family.

It was just before Christmas, I think around 1930 (I wsn't born yet), and my father drove to town 10 miles away (The family was Amish but in North Dakota cars were allowed) to pick up some last stuff. He knew a storm was coming but thought he'd get home before it hit.

He bought his things but by the time he got them into the car the snow was flying thick and heavy. It occurred to him to spend the night in town but he didn't want to leave my mother alone with the children, plus if the roads were closed for any length of time there was stock to tend to. So he took off.

About three miles out of town his car started cutting out and finally quit entirely. He worked on it and worked on it but it was no go. By this time the wind was howling and visibility was just about zero. He thought about walking back to town but figured his chances of getting home were just about as good as they were of getting back to town. Besides, he knew the terrain – pretty flat - and the fences...

At home my mother fed the children an early supper then went out to feed the cows and horses.   They had long since tied ropes between various buildings and my mother clung to them, afraid that if she fell down she'd never find the house again. She milked the milch cow but long before she made it back to the house the wind tore the bucket from her hand and it flew away.

Safely back in the house she assured the children that Daddy would stay in town until tomorrow and promised them she would pop some corn and make some hot cocoa for a special treat.

It was long after dark when the door flew open and crashed against the wall. A snow-covered hulk lurched into the house. My mother screamed, the children started crying.

Well... guess what? It started snowing lightly at 11:30AM...

I went out and did my preparations....as best I could. Moved car & van to the base of drive and covered them with sheets of plastic, leaving a clear area behind them where I can easily?? shovel when it's over, then I can move vehicles back and have 'relatively' clear access to street with as little shoveling as possible. Also lined up about 8 trash cans and plastic tubs in the narrowest area between house & driveway, so I can just lift and dump them, leaving some bare pavement underneath.

(Taking pics as I go... need to document this one! I 'may' go out and shovel several times during the evening, on my theory that doing 15 minutes on 3" 4-5 times is better than 3 hours of 20" when it's done.)

Y'all stay warm, ya' hear?

(and I hope no one gets even a 'technical' blizzard in this mess)

I see my 'general' guidelines about sustained winds and quantity of snow are reflected to the definitions Sawzaw posted.

The only blizzard conditions I was ever in was when I was young and in a house in the city....the drifts were amazing!

lordy! Now some sources are saying we 'could' get 30"

"Snowfalls of this magnitude — let alone two in one season — are rare in the area. According to the National Weather Service, Washington has gotten more than a foot of snow only 13 times since 1870. The heaviest on record was 28 inches in January 1922. But the biggest snowfall is believed to have occurred in 1772, before official records were kept, when as much as 3 feet fell in the Washington-Baltimore area. Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson mentioned the event in their diaries, according to the weather service."

Dear Volunteers, Performers, Members and Friends,
While as of 8 pm Thursday evening Montgomery County had not yet made an official announcement, it is clear that the predicted snow is on the way, and that functions such as Mini-Fest, scheduled to be held in a school facility, must be cancelled. Fairfax, Loudoun, Stafford, and Howard County school systems have already announced that they will be closed Friday and that all weekend activities in school buildings are cancelled. Montgomery County will doubtless follow suit. "

Been snowin' now since about 6:30 this mornin' but only about 2 inches so far (on top of what was left of the 6 we got a couple days ago...)...

At this rate I won't do my first plowing until late afternoon... I think plowing at 4 to 6 inches will give me half a chance by the end of the day of gettin' after it good tomorrow morning... Now we've heard numbers as much as 30 inches... I'm not sure how to go about diggin' out of 30 inches... I mean, there are only so many places I can put the snow...

Oh well??? I got shine, right???

B~

My wife just told me that a Chicago TV weatherman said, "The Washington, DC area is forecasted to get 24 inches of snow. That's 23 1/2 inches more than they're used to."

I was watching a weatherman today who explained that they measure the inches in water content, not how deep the snow really is. The snow will not be 24 inches deep, he said, but will be very wet snow.

Snowin' like a sumabich here now... Still ain't accumulatin' much, however, 'cause it's a wet snow...

Just went out and at least shoveled the paths we'll be using for the next few days or weeks...

Where the heck is spring???

Oh yeah, internet has allready started its in and out trick 'cause we got satellite...

Speakin' of satellites, I heard on the radio this mornin' that ex-planet Pluto is purdy pissed off about being downgraded... Seems it is appearing redder and redder in the telescope... I'm kinda worried that it's gonna turn itself into a bigass meteorite and come put a hurt on Earth for being dissed... I donno... I wouldn't blame it, tho...

Mommy, what's a blizzard?
Is it cold, and is it white?
Do little kids get to stay home,
If it happens overnight?
Ever since we moved to San Diego,
I get chills down in my gizzard,
When my li'l daughter asks me,
Mommy, what's a blizzard?....

3-4 inches of the sky has fallen, so far. I have 'scooped'/shoveled twice so far, just to stay ahead while I can.(I am NOT gonna stay up all night).

Wet indeed, and I am using a pushbroom to shake the branches of our bushes that line the downstairs entrance, so they don't break, and so they don't block the path.

If this is gonna be one for the history books, I am gonna do my bit to fight it.

What we are worried about is potential power outages from limbs on power lines. We are cooking a couple things than can be eaten cold...and I have LOTS of peanut butter & bread! *grin*

Wow. I just checked DC's forecast. Winter Storm Warning effective until 10:00 Saturday night. Some areas will rack up more than 30 inches.

Stay home, everybody!

If you get some good stuff don't waste it - ship it to Canada for the winter olympics.

Ship it to Canada? That's okay... just get the correct address... 3000 miles from me.

Made the first and last pass down the driveway a couple times for the day... About 5 inches of really wet snow....

If anyone wants my snow then can have it for free... Come fetch... Take all...
