Subject: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 16 Feb 10 - 05:34 PM We're just back from the hospital, having spoken to Dr Z, who has told us that Kendall's operation went really well, with no need to use a skin flap to cover the affected area. The operation took only four hours, the work was extensive but less invasive than he had expected. He says that he would be surprised if there was any cancer found – the problem was massive infection and cartilage damaged well beyond repair. Right now he's still in recovery and we have to wait for about an hour to find out which ICU he will go to. He has a breathing tube in place, which will stay in for an as yet undetermined length of time. He may have to come home with the tube in. Hopefully he should come home in about two weeks. They are going to try and get him eating and drinking tomorrow, which will obviously aid recovery. More later. The girls and I are pretty wasted, but it is so good that we can give him such good news when we see him. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Feb 10 - 08:14 PM Outstanding news and as others noted, it went as well and even better than what was expected. This is indeed great news. Now do I get to be a prick? Oh, what the hell.......I'm a prick to begin with so here goes..... Based on what we saw with Tom's first experience and having some knowledge of Docs myself, I think this Doctor has a strictly prescribed post op program and it needs to be adhered to no matter how long or boring or awful it is. I know this isn't easy for Kendall but if the success of this procedure relies upon following dietary and other instructions, then it needs to be done. If we have to take up a collection and monotor the old fart 24/7 with professional wrestlers, we'll take up a collection to be sure it happens. If the diet calls for only drinking fortified Tibetan Yak piss........we'll get some! We'll send Bobertz. Now if I hear that Kendall is not doing as told, please allow him to open all the mail as I will send him a bag of Spaw Farts. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Feb 10 - 07:06 AM We went to the ICU last evening and spent a few minutes with Kendall. He was tired and in some pain, mainly from the catheter, but they have given him a 'pain pump' to control that. He looked pretty good and insisted that the nurses knew about the Grammy nomination - he is SO proud of that. He has two lovely nurses, one of whom thinks that he is 'sweet'. Becca disabused her of that notion. I've just been on the phone to ICU to check on his status. I've been told that he is doing brilliantly - he got out of bed at 2.30am and sat in a chair for a couple of hours, they then walked hin around the ward and got him back to bed at about 5.30. They will be taking the catheter out this morning and, if he continues to do so well and there is a bed available, they will move him up to the ward later today. More, once I've seen him this morning. I'm hoping that he will be able to use the laptop at some point, otherwise I'll print out the thread and take it in to him. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Bobert Date: 17 Feb 10 - 07:17 AM Keep yer eye on that nurse, jacqui... She might try somethin' funny with the Capt'n when he's drugged up... Ya' never know... I heard of this dentist who did funny stuff on some of his patients while they was drugged up... I got it... Take Kendall's harpoon down to ICU today and tell the nurse that it's yers and that you know how to use it... That oughtta work... B~ |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Feb 10 - 10:54 AM Glad to hear he's moving to a friendlier part of the hospital. Do the nurses know about his sense of humor, is that why the first batch is moving him along? ;-D I agree about the grits! Why do they offer up such an awful food that many people in their right minds wouldn't touch in their healthiest of times? If you didn't grow up with grits, they don't suddenly become appealing when you're a captive audience in a hospital. And if they give him oatmeal instead, make sure they use some salt (or it tastes as bad a grits.) SRS |

I'm gratified to know he's sitting up and taking nourishment. I am, however, disappointed to know that he's forgone the wondrous healing power of grits. It is a known fact that they possess mystic healing properties first noted by the Mayans. Plus they taste really good. But then Kendall hasn't had Susette's grits. All the best to Jacqui and my friend, Kendall, may he live a thousand years, for I'm sure there's a few mistakes he hasn't had the fun of making. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: catspaw49 Date: 17 Feb 10 - 12:51 PM Sandy Paton told a great story about being down south, North Carolina as I recall, and stopping in a little diner for breakfast. He ordered eggs and bacon and toast but the waitress told him the grits weren't ready yet. Sandy explained he really didn't care much about grits anyhow and he'd be happy with just the eggs and bacon. The waitress still refused to serve him eggs without grits, it just wasn't done that way! And sits in a chair for a while - in other words he's fighting to get well. He is also flirting with the nurses and we have at least four new Groupies to initiate. There is a picture soon to be posted. All good news. SINS |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Feb 10 - 07:21 AM Didn't put anything up last night - I was a bit tired when I got back to the hotel. We had a bit of a setback yesterday - Kendall is finding it very difficult to swallow anything, probably as a result of the swelling in the area. They tried him on red jello yesterday afternoon but even that was difficult. The breathing tube in his neck needs to be syphoned out regularly, to remove the crap remaining from the operation - I am not going into details here - and, after the jello, this stuff, according to Nurse Ratched (yes, we have one) had too much of a pinkish hue to be blood, which is expected, and she thought that there may be some jello getting into the wrong place. Green jello was requested to see if that showed up, up yellow arrived - not much help. The resident was called and we were told that he wanted to start feeding Kendall via tube, which did not make the poor guy at all happy. When the resident got there this was discussed and put on hold until today, when they will do a barium swallow to see exactly what is going on down there. So, he's still in ICU, as it is taking longer for the syphoning process to ease up and we have to wait to see what else is going on. The good news is that he has a delightful student nurse for basically one to one care and there is flirting going on there, I think both ways. She has made the stay in ICU much more bearable. I'm off to the hospital in a few minutes, to be there when the resident does his rounds. We think that Dr Z may be in today. More to follow. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: gnu Date: 18 Feb 10 - 05:22 PM He has access to a PC, obviously. I sent some CLEAN jokes earlier. So, the only point of posting them here would be for others... what the heck... brb... A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means? The son replied, "I do know!" "Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?" "That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly," It stands for: 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.' ======= There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible to her brother in another part of the country. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady. ======== "Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord," and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good Lord, it's morning." ======== A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer, along with this note: "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket, I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation." ======== There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets." ======== While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... "Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust." ======== A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, "Boys and girls, what do we know about God?" A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the kindergarten boy. "Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked. "You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven... " ======== A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business." ======== People want: the front of the bus, the back of the church, and the center of attention. ======== Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilt." Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming." ======== The minister was preoccupied with thoughts of how he was going to ask the congregation to come up with more money than they were expecting for repairs to the church building. Therefore, he was annoyed to find that the regular organist was sick and a substitute had been brought in at the last minute. The substitute wanted to know what to play. "Here's a copy of the service," he said impatiently. "But, you'll have to think of something to play after I make the announcement about the finances." During the service, the minister paused and said, "Brothers and Sisters, we are in great difficulty; the roof repairs cost twice as much as we expected and we need $4,000 more. Any of you who can pledge $100 or more, please stand up." At that moment, the substitute organist played "The Star Spangled Banner." And that is how the substitute became the regular organist! |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 19 Feb 10 - 02:12 PM Bad day yesterday. He hadn't been able to sleep overnight and they would not give anything to help as he was still expectorating copiously through the tracheal tube and they were concerned that he could choke in his sleep. Following the jello episode it was decided that Kendall had to have a barium swallow test, which didn't happen until 1.00pm. a couple of hours later Dr Z and his resident were here and put in a nasal feeding tube - a very unpleasant experience for Kendall. He then had to have an x-ray to make sure that it was in place, but the first one, taken sitting in a chair, didn't give a definitive answer, and we had to wait until 8.00pm for them to put him into bed to take another x-ray. In the meantime he was getting more and more frustrated at being connected to so may wires and tubes, the nasal feeding tube was painful, until they anchored it more securely, and he was so tired but could not get any meaningful rest, with all the noise and action going on in ICU. I phoned at about 10.00pm and was told that the tube was in place and that they were just administering his sleep medicine. When I got here this morning he looked much better, more rested and brighter. He had slept until 3.30am, when someone came into the room, but had got some good sleep. He's on the feeding tube - about 100 calories an hour, which they will be increasing. They are also putting pain meds through there, which means one less attachment to bother about. We went for a walk around the unit, unaccompanied, and did four laps of the area, much to the amusement of the staff, who rarely see their patients quite so animated! He is now able to deal with the trach tube himself, which is a real move forward. We are told that there may be a bed available today - he resident is really pushing for Kendall to get on to the ward, where it will be quieter and where he will only be attached to the breathing tube and the feeding tube. Right now, even just to pee, he needs to have all the tubes removed and then replaced. He's still feeling rather down about the whole thing. His favourite nurse isn't in today, which hasn't helped and he really just wants to be home. Right now he's dozing while I write this - I think that the pain meds may be helping with that. Once we get onto a ward I'll give an address for cards. Right now we think we know where we are going to be but I'd rather make sure. |

"Dear Boy, if you're reading this, you're far, far better than you were when you couldn't! Thought you might enjoy a bit O lite readin' 'bout now! Glad you're on the mend! Sea Chill (Arthur Guiterman) (News item, ca 1928:) "When Mrs. John Masefield and her husband, the author of "Imust go down to the seas again", arrived here on a liner, she saidto a reporter, "It was too uppy-downy, and Mr. Masefield was ill.") I must go down to the seas again, where the billows romp and reel, And all I ask is a large ship that rides on an even keel, And a mild breeze and a broad deck with a slight list to leeward, And a clean chair in a snug nook and a nice, kind, steward. I must go down to the seas again, the sport of wind and tide, As the gray wave and the green wave play leap-frog over the side. And all I want is a glassy calm with a bone-dry scupper, A good book and a warm rug and a light, plain supper. I must go down to the seas again, though there I'm a total loss And can't say which is worse, the pitch, the plunge, the roll, the toss. But all I ask is a safe retreat in a bar well tended, And a soft berth and a smooth course 'till the long trip's ended. Peace, Love, Rest, and so much Friendship, to both you and Jacqui-...quite a team you you be! Bob Z |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 Feb 10 - 12:04 PM I'm glad you're into a regular room. Does that mean you'll get a regular night's sleep? I slept on several convertible pieces of hospital room furniture when Moonglow was in the hospital a couple of times back in her freshman year of college. If Jacqui is sleeping on something similar I think she'll be even more ready to head home on Tuesday than you are! Take care, both of you! SRS |

We're keeping visitors to a minimum as he's tiring very easily and I'll let you know if that changes. For now he needs peace and quiet and to be able to rest as much as possible to heal. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Feb 10 - 02:41 PM I'm glad he's on a FLOOR now as things are a lot easier there to say the least. Sleep is exactly what is needed and asking for something for pain or sleep is not cheating or drug seeking. There are no points awarded for "toughing it out" unless they are for stupidity. Get all the rest you can now and then get more at home. Its the best way to go. And follow the Doc's orders whatever they are regarding speaking, diet, or taking a crap. Bitch, piss, and moan, but DO IT!!! BTW.....The reason Bill didn't want to feel the leather coat is that he feels something leather of his own................... We all love you Kendall..............I have no idea why. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Amos Date: 20 Feb 10 - 04:09 PM A good reason for keeping visitors to a minimum--if he's feeling anti-social he's likely to decapitate them by twos and threes, and he's not interested in getting a head. A |

Kendall probably would love to switch places with either one of us. That was the end of the bitchin. Sounds like progress is being made and it probably seems slow at this point. Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: SINSULL Date: 21 Feb 10 - 10:03 AM I spent a little time with the Captain yesterday - delivered a few necessities - and got Jacqui out for lunch. Seems to me I remember a perky nurse pumping in huge amounts of a protein mix. Not surprised it hit bottom with a thud. Three days of almost nothing and then two hours of the equivalent of a pepperoni pizza will do it. Have to admit Kendall, when I walked into your room I was braced for the worst and determined not to let it show on my face. Instead there was my old friend looking healthy and acting sassy. You are an amazing man. You probably feel as if you have been hit by a truck but you don't look it. Jacqui looks more tired than you. Maybe it's those sassy nurses. Folks, he has one who matches him quip for quip. Re: his breathing mask - "I know you like it from behind.". She is a gem. He is all blue eyes and dimples when she's around. But he does tire easily. And with all the holes and tubes and lack of privacy re: bodily functions, it can't be easy for our Mainer to have company. Check with Jacqui before you make any surprise visits. It is all about Kendall right now and like me you will be asked to vacate the premises on demand. SINS |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 21 Feb 10 - 10:27 AM Thanks Mary - Kendall will be getting a number of visitors today - his family are coming in en masse, including his grandson. He gets tired very fast and I will be checking to make sure that he doesn't get over tired. So, right now, no visitors unless I've said OK, please. He's probably going to be going through a barium swallow tomorrow - the last one left him feeling very much under the weather and just wanting to rest - not a pleasant experience. Saying that, he's in good spirits this morning and looking better every day. He is recovering amazingly well and is managing the trach tube himself with no problem at all. Now, if we can get that tube out and start him eating properly....... He has been promised Maine shrimp as soon as he can manage to swallow it and lobster as soon as he wants it. It will be good to get home. I'm being cared for well. Kendall's oldest daughter makes sure that I have a good meal and a glass of wine when I get back there at night and a packed lunch and juice to take with me. Mary was amazing yesterday - it did me so much good to have her visit - and Deb and Becca are checking to make sure I'm OK, which I am, now that Kendall is recovering so well. Thanks to all of you - your posts mean so much to both of us. Jacqui |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Feb 10 - 11:51 AM It looks like you're being well cared for up there! Jacqui, if you can find a quiet spot for a 15-20 minute power nap a couple of times a day that should help your energy level. When given an impromptu nap location (like if I'm driving and am so tired I must pull over for a nap in the driver's seat with it tipped back) my technique is to pull the hood from my jacket up and over my forehead so I can cover my eyes with it. If you can't darken the room, you need to at least block out the light. And I set the timer on my phone. Kendall, heal well and get past all of these tubes and wires quickly. SRS |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: gnu Date: 21 Feb 10 - 01:15 PM I used to take one power nap... set aside 40 minutes after a late lunch, allowing 5 to 10 minutes to fall fully asleep. Worked great. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: SINSULL Date: 21 Feb 10 - 01:30 PM I wish I could power nap. I fall so deeply asleep so fast that waking up becomes a problem and I am groggy for hours. I am better off relaxing and medidating for 20 minutes. Completely relaxed while still awake. Wonder if they will send Kendall home with some Ambian????? |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Bill D Date: 21 Feb 10 - 04:13 PM Ambien is a marvel! Even the cheap generic form is all I need to control things. (It works quickly, and I can usually take 1/4 of one to get to sleep, and another 1/4 if I wake up at 4AM.) |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Bill D Date: 21 Feb 10 - 08:10 PM "What cheap generic?" zolpidem tartrate is $10 on my HMO's list, while Ambien CR isn't even listed and costs enough that they can offer a $20 per prescription 'discount' on it. here's their propaganda. OF COURSE I'd like to have the CR and perhaps sleep thru the night, but I'll put up with the slight inconvenience, since I got my doctor to give me 30...which costs $10 and lasts me at least 60 days! You note KT says it does strange things, while katlaughing says she can't feel it. People are different...I'm just lucky that most drugs act just like they're supposed to on me. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Bill D Date: 21 Feb 10 - 08:15 PM and Gmail may just be a problem because of whatever connection you have to use at the hospital? Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Feb 10 - 10:27 AM Morning all! I walked in to the room this morning and KENDALL SPOKE TO ME!!!!!!! They took the breathing tube out this morning and he just has a gauze pad over the hole now. He has to hold his finger over the hole to talk, but has a deep, growly voice, which is easily understood. He's still writing stuff as I think it is a bit of an effort to talk, but he's getting there. He has to have another barium swallow test today to make sure that he isn't aspirating into the trachea and, if that goes OK he can start eating. Given that everything goes OK we are told that he may be able to come home toward the end of the week, but they need to check that he is managing everything OK first. Right now he's impatient to go for a walk - his blood pressure is up as a result of the steroids and he needs a little exercise regularly. I'll post more later. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Feb 10 - 10:55 AM Becca - check your phone messages. Right now he's gone for the barium swallow and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a good result from that. We phoned each of his daughters and I handed him the phone so that they could get the same joy that I did from the surprise of hearing him talk. We will have the speech therapist coming and and a therapist to check on his breathing. Dr Bryant has said that they will use a nebulizer to keep his airways moist so that will be happening today. Looks like it will be a busy day! He was very tired after visits from his family yesterday so, in between the medical stuff, we will be trying to rest up a bit. If you want to send cards I would suggest that you send them to him at home - we don't know how long he will be here now and the mail is being forwarded in the meantime. PM me if you need an address. Right now I'm going to sit back a take a few deep breaths until he comes back. This is all such a relief! |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Feb 10 - 01:42 PM I've just come back from lunch to find Kendall attacking his lunch tray with real gusto. He says that if anything ever tasted that good he can't remember when. Elaine, his daughter, is buying Maine shrimp for us to bring to the hospital tomorrow - he says he could eat them with the shells still on. He told me that it is the love and support he has had from so many people that has helped him to heal so fast, together with determination not to let this thing beat him. Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: kendall Date: 24 Feb 10 - 05:29 AM Wide awake at 4:30 today with a beautiful nurse bringing me pain killers and ice cream; what a life! I wonder if those Muslims are right about being dead? What would I do with 72 of them? They would probably wonder what they did to deserve me! I feel great, ready to split this joint tomorrow. I do miss my chair, remote and dog. Of course if the weather acts up and we get a lot of snow I will be stuck here another day or so. Oh well, I've been in worse places, Hull and Hell and Halifax etc. Come back. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Feb 10 - 06:05 AM Well someone needs to break you up cause you can be a tough old bird to get down in big chunks. Can't help but notice the past couple of days that you're a pretty feisty old bird as well! I mean like, geeeziz......Give a guy a guy a voice and all of a sudden he's back to crowin' like a rooster....I was gonna' say cock but I didn't want to give you delusions of grandeur. Listen here though.........I've talked to some of them ol' hens that follow you around and I got news for you. You're gonna' have to walk the straight and narrow for awhile so things keep going right or that bunch will beat the livin' crap outta' you. They're pretty happy that you're doing so great and they're pretty worn out with your ass being sick so if they see you going off in some direction other than the straight and narrow, they're gonna' be on you like stink on shit! If I was you.......and thankfully I'm not......I would just kick back, enjoy the ride, and do what they say. Just an opinion but I'm right of course.......... Spaw |

So tell the truth now, Kendall: do you wear anything under those biker chaps of yours? |

Just came from the meeting of docs -- they're keeping him to figure out what the REAL problem is with the lethargy & breathlessness since they don't seem to think it's the defib battery. I'm heading home this afternoon (since I missed the 11 am train). You've got a wonderful view overlooking Boston right now, but I know you'll be happy to see the view from your front window at home. See you soon. Linn |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Amos Date: 24 Feb 10 - 11:36 AM Glad it worked, KEndall. As for this groupie situation--I am getting confused. Are these gals or mules that surround you? If they are mules, I think you oughta cut back on giving them all these cute names. Whoever heard of a mule named Sinsull, if you see what I mean? If they are actually the gals I always thought them to be, its going to get interesting when you start hankering for spanners. "Where's Kendall, wasn't it your turn to guard him?" "He said he had to pee, and he couldn't hold it. I offered to hold it for him, but he said that was off-limits...". "Ewwwww!! But...the bathroom light is off...Gawdammit!! He's slipped into the garage." (Distant sound of a V-8 head bolt being turned) "KEEENDALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!...." |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 24 Feb 10 - 01:30 PM I'm home right now and resting up before the trip back into Boston tomorrow with Mary. I talked with Kendall a couple of times today - managed to catch him as both his breakfast and lunch were being served. Wonder if I can do the same at supper time? He sounds fine - I wish that I had been able to get in to see him today, but there was a lot of snow in Derry and we decided that I would be best off heading straight for Maine. He didn't say anything about beautiful nurses at 4.30 to me! Hmmmmmnnn........ |

We can arrabge to lock the two of you in a room together for three or four hours if you really want the experience - AFTER he's off the oxycontin. Besides, you're so nice he's probably afraid he'll make you cry. By the way, you are a Kendall Groupie. How could you not know that? back to the CELLAR! now |

Today's my birthday, and Maine is awash in a depressing rush of rain-that-should-be-snow. My farm truck is stuck in the mud in a driveway that should be hard-frozen. Nonetheless, I'm happy. Rain is better than snow for your drive home, and I'm thrilled that that's where you're headed. I consider the news a birthday present, of sorts. So... happy birthday to me, but most especially, HAPPY HOMECOMING!!! |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: SINSULL Date: 25 Feb 10 - 05:14 PM We're baa-aaack. Tired and wet. Portland is expecting 8-9" of rain. My mantra - thank god it's not snow. Jacqui and I have been flying since about 8AM this morning. Cars, cabs, feet, elevators, etc. Kendall is home although he almost spent half the trip on a roof rack. He has problems with my driving. But I got him and Jacqui and the car home unscathed. Now for a shot of something hard. By the way, he looks wonderful and downed a burger and fries. SINS |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: jacqui.c Date: 25 Feb 10 - 05:17 PM Happy birthday Cuilionn - live long, die happy. We got home about 20 minutes ago after a long and very wet drive. Many thanks to Mary, who did the lion's share of the driving in really foul weather. Kendall had a final scope by one of Dr Z's partners, who was most impressed with his recovery, and we got some good advice from Sonny, the senior technical assistant in the office, about how to ensure fast healing of the remaining hole in Kendall's neck. We have a home nurse coming in tomorrow to set up some of the machinery that has come home with us, but, for the rest of today and tomorrow, it is going to be a case of just curling up and resting for us both. This past week and a half has been long and hard and we are both glad that it is over. I can only give thanks for the support of both our families and friends and of the wonderful folk on the 'Cat, who have seen us both through this. You made our lives a lot lighter than might otherwise have been the case. Thank you all. |

He has seen the doctor and has steroids to keep any swelling form occurring and we will be back to Boston some time next week to make sure that the coughing and sneezing haven't caused any sort of damage. I think he will be OK, but it was a bit worrying when I heard him coughing so much this morning. Anyway, we're all stocked up with food and have no need to venture out for a couple of days, so we can sit home, remotes in hand, and veg out with whatever happens to be on the goggle box. Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: kendall Date: 01 Mar 10 - 02:36 AM Bobert, sorry, but you can't really "bring up my harpoon". I gave it away to a museum. Tell you the truth for a change, I actually want a 1934 Ford. I love the style and they run so smooth and quiet. This '48 Chevy has 98000 miles on it and it sounds like a friggin' rock crusher. They will run forever but they sure do make a touse while they do it. Clearance in the mains is 3000 of an inch and that's too much for quiet. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Rapparee Date: 01 Mar 10 - 09:55 AM Well now, Cap'n...mebbe we kin make a deal here. Yah see, mah very own brother owns a harpoon. He bought it when he thought he could use it fishin' in the Mississippi River, but the danged fish were too danged big for it. Now, his wife runs a tight ship yah might say, and so his harpoon is on the wall of his garage, right above his workbench. It's in decent shape, since he's never used it (he tried, but it bounced off that ol' catfish, who picked it up and threatened my brother with a hemorrhoidectomy. Mebbe we kin strike a bargain here. |
Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: GUEST,kendall Date: 01 Mar 10 - 11:52 AM Sorry but I've lost my lust for whaling, and a harpoon is not much good for anything else. |

Subject: RE: Kendall at Mass Gen. 2.16.10 From: Amos Date: 01 Mar 10 - 03:45 PM That's Babbitt bearings--a kind of pot-metal which doesn't hold specs real well... "a series of alloys used as bearing metal (not just Isaac Babbitt's original formulation). Babbitt metal is characterized by its resistance to galling. The term "white metal" is also used in reference to bearing metal, but it is ambiguous because of the wide variety of senses that it has been used for over the centuries. A wide variety of Babbitt alloys exist. Some common compositions are: * 90% tin, 10% copper * 89% tin, 7% antimony, 4% copper * 80% lead, 15% antimony, 5% tin * A lead-based based Babbitt (75% lead, 10% tin) * A copper-lead based Babbitt (76% copper, 24% lead) * A copper-lead-tin based Babbitt composed of (67% copper, 28% tin) Originally used as a cast in place bulk bearing material, it is now more commonly used as a thin surface layer in a complex, multi metal structure. Babbitt metal is soft and easily damaged, and seems at first sight an unlikely candidate for a bearing surface, but this appearance is deceptive. The structure of the alloy is made up of small hard crystals dispersed in a metal matrix composite of softer alloy. As the bearing wears the harder crystal is exposed, with the matrix eroding somewhat to provide a path for the lubricant between the high spots that provide the actual bearing surface. Tin gives Babbitt the property of lubrication if run without a lubricant. The friction will cause the tin to melt out to prevent or reduce damage to the shaft. Combustion motors use the tin based Babbitt. The Tin based Babbitt is able to resist with pounding found in the combustion motor. Lead based Babbitt tends to work harden and create cracks which will lead to the bearing failing. Lead based Babbitt can be used with constant turning tools such as saws." (Wikipedia) A |
