I had this playing when I heard the passage of the BILL was accomplished!

Whew, all the lyrics are perfect for the momentous moment.

I keep on coming back to Dylan just for listening and from a nostalgia--and I'm continuously amazed by his meaningful output through the years.-------- And this is from an avowed disciple of the old tradition. Bob's respect for the traditions are to be seen throughout.

REALLY, look at the "Ship Comes In" words. It fits completely.

One of my all time favorite Bobsongs, have always had a special fondness for the imagery in the third stanza.

I agree, Art. In fact, for some reason, I've been listening to him a lot, lately, too, remembering why I've always loved his music. This song is definitely perfect for these times. How neat you had it on whilst they finally did the "right" thing.:-)

I am listening to a 1960s recording of it, by him, on youtube.

Songs of optimism - common in earlier days ("Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries", "Side by Side", "Keep on the Sunny Side", "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and two different "Sitting on Top of the World"s - are rather rare nowadays. Different times I guess.

"When the Ship Comes in" is certainly one of the best modern examples, followed closely by Bob Seger's "In Your Time".

Dylan was a young man, full of the intense ideals of the young, and he foresaw a great social victory over corrupt forces when he wrote that song.

He wrote it because he got very angry over some pompous hotel staff in the southern USA who tried to refuse to give him (the raggedy kid, as they saw him at the time) a room until the much better known Joan Baez turned her queenly wrath on them, gave them a piece of her mind, and they relented. He wrote the song the same night. Joan talks about it in her autobiography and about how impressed she was at how he had "skewered them" in song and verse and written a classic song right on the spot.

beeliner, my sisters sing Side By Side quite often. Thanks for reminding me of it! Also, Keep On The Sunny Side, was in the recent movie, O Brother Where Art Thou, if I remember correctly, so maybe it will enjoy a renaissance; I understand a lot of younger people loved the movie and bought the soundtrack.

I'm glad the healthcare bill, such as it is, passed. But not exactly overjoyed...

I see it as a necessary break with a very broken status quo, but highly compromised in that it mostly guarantees that the current insurance profiteers will sign up millions of additional manadated buyers, in exchange for a few basic concessions at they should easily be able to afford with their new windfall profits.

Hardly earthshaking or apocalyptic ~ unless this is truly the start of something bigger and better...
