Here's a cool way to put some spark in this old Dylan strummer.

WHEN THE SHIP COMES IN
(Bob Dylan)

tuning: DADGBE

000(11)(10)(10)///,0009(10)9///,000787///,000775///,000675///,000453///,X02030///,X02020,{X0XXXX,X2XXXX,X4XXXX,XX0XXX<< Oh the time will 040222 come when the 555433 winds will 00232 stop
And the X24432 breeze will 555433 cease to be 000232 breathing 000030,000232
Like a stillness in the 040222 wind 'fore the 555433 hurricane 000232 begins
The hour that the 555433 ship X03330 comes in.000030,000232
Then the 040222 sea will split and the 555433 ship will 000232 hit
And the 040222 sands on the 555433 shore line will be 000232 shaking
Then the 000(11)(10)(10)tide will 0009(10)9 sound and the 000787 waves will 000775 pound
And the 000675 morning 000453 will be X02030 break-X02020,000232-ing. 000433,000232,000030,000232

O the fishes will laugh as they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they'll be smiling
And the rocks on the sand will proudly stand, the hour...
And the words that are used for to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they are spoken
For the chains of the sea will have busted in the night
And be buried at the bottom of the ocean.
A song will lift as the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts on to the shoreline
And the sun will respect every face on the deck, the hour...
Then the sands will roll out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a touching
And the ship's wise men will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watching.

Oh the foes will rise with the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreaming
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
As they know that it's for real, the hour...
Then they'll raise their hands saying we'll meet all your demands
But we'll shout from the bow, your days are numbered
And like Pharaoh's tribe they'll be drowned in the tide
And like Goliath they'll be conquered.

There is an odd connection between this and Dylan's actual chords for Chimes of Freedom (which look like lots of XX5433, etc.).
yours, Peter T.

Gee, I don't know Peter. Those "Chimes of Freedom" chords sound like something that Dylan must have lifted from the inimitable Donovan's "Catch The Wind".

Hmm, that's a thought. Rick F. and I wrestled with the Chimes of Freedom chords without great success. yours, Peter T.

Bob Dylan's When The Ship Comes In has gained new life among the political left in recent days. One change to note:

And the wise women and men will remind you once again,
That the whole wide world is watching.

Also, those last eight lines are being sung with Messers. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Ashcroft, and Powell, and Ms. Rice in mind!

I think the best recording I have heard of "When The Ship..." is by Cindy Kallet, Ellen Epstein and Michael Cicone on their CD "Only Human".

I think it came in. And the world's wise men will remind us once again that the whole wide world is watching. It is the song that keeps coming to me. I especially like the Clancy Brothers version.

There is also a very lovely song by Eliza Gylkerson called Requiem that people are suggesting, as well as some new ones on you tube. mg

WHEN THE SHIP COMES IN
(Bob Dylan)

Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be a'breathin'
Like the stillness in the wind
Before the hurricane begins
The hour when the ship comes in

And the sea will split
And the ship will hit
And the shoreline sands will be a'shakin'
And the tide will sound
And the waves will pound
And the morning will be breakin'

Oh the fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls will be a'smilin'
And the rocks on the sand
Will proudly stand
The hour that the ship comes in

And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they're spoken
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And be buried at the bottom of the ocean

A song will lift,
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts out to the shoreline
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck
The hour that the ship comes in

And the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a'touchin'
And the ship's wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'

Oh the foe will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'
And they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And they'll know that it's for real
The hour when the ship comes in

And they'll raise their hands
Sayin' "We'll meet all your demands"
And we'll shout from the bow "Your days are numbered"
And like the pharoah's triumph
They'll be drownded in the tide
Like Goliath they'll be conquered

There's an article on this song in Wikipedia. I learned the song from the 1965 Peter Paul and Mary A Song Will Rise album, and that's still the recording I like best. Oftentimes, I live cover recordings of Dylan songs better than the Dylan recording.

And Bob Dylan is in action this week, in China:

"Bob Dylan, who turns 70 next month, played his first concert ever in China this week, at a packed Workers' Gymnasium in Beijing.

In China, Dylan is considered a sheng ren – a sage. He did play "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". The Chinese translation may have sent shivers down the spine of many a Middle Kingdom strategist."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
