Subject: Lyr Add: REDBONE HOUND (Rodney Dillard)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 27 Dec 10 - 08:20 PM

First I played a sound sample at Allmusic.com, which gave me most of the chorus. Then I googled and found these additional lyrics at a blog belonging to the Midlife Gals:

REDBONE HOUND
Rodney Dillard

Fogeye, Piefoot, Redbone, Dragalong,
Coof, all night you can still hear his song.
Runnin' with the moon on a black-faced riverbank,
Flatfoot and Fickly with a coon on the run.

CHORUS: Redbone hound, come and get your belly up,
Lyin' on your tail all day long.
The mist is a-risin' in the Cripple Creek Holler.
Gonna run till the dew on the grass meets the sun.

Old Fogeye been rackin' through the bean field,
Diggin' up the corn seed, he can't do more.
Uncle Jack says he's goin' for his shotgun.
Gonna nail his hide on the chicken-house door!

[I assume all the strange words in this song are names of dogs. Accordingly, I have capitalized them, although they weren't capitalized in the text I copied from. Please correct me if I'm wrong.]

I neglected to mention that this song was requested in another thread, here. The requestor also wanted chords but I am unable to supply them.

I'd say it's "cool fall night you can still hear a song"
and "black trace riverbank", but it's hard to tell.

The rest sounds right to me.

My guitar teacher worked out the lead and chords for me.

You mean there wasn't a dog named Coof?
coof
[koof]
noun Chiefly Scot.
a silly or stupid person.
Sounds like a good name for a dog to me.

Oh, well, I think you're right anyway.

It could be coof- as being the sound of the bark of many hounds used for coon hunting, or it could be cool fall night, since that's when a lot of coon hunting is done. Fogeye is the name of the coon, Piefoot is probably the lead dog. Flatfoot may refer to the way a big hound runs, kind of like a bear, flopping their big feet out flatfooted. Fickly may refer to dogs being trained to only chase coons.

I believe the line is:
"Flatfootin' fifty with a coon on the run."
Which means running fast as you can after your coon dogs....I gather none of yall have ever gone coon huntin', have you?

When I was growing up many years ago, there was a saying we all said when someone was running as hard as they could...flat-footin' fifty...which refered to 50 mph.

Could it be a dog of the Redbone people? I gather theuare of mixed ethnicity but of unknown past...often mentioned in conversations about Melungeons. mg

Fall guys, proudfoot, redbone drag along
Cool fall nights you can still hear a song
Running with the moon on a black trace riverbank
Flatfoot and fifty with a coon on the run

Redbone hound, come and get your belly up
Lyin' on your tail all day long
The mist is rising in the Cripple Creek holler
Gonna run 'til the dew on the grass meets the sun

Ol' fall guys been rackin' through the beanpatch
Diggin' up the corn seed can't do more
Uncle Jack said he's going for the shotgun
Gonna nail his hide to the chicken house door

Lyrics as posted on the Dillards doing the song on Youtube.

Re: “a dog of the Redbone people” – mg ??
Redbone - a type of hunting dog; used to hunt raccoon, deer, boar, cougar, or other large game. Redbone Coonhound dogs originated in the Southern United States, and derive from foxhounds brought by immigrants from Scotland.

Also, a coon hunting friend of mine clarified the first two words; he believes they are: “Fogeye” [a southern slang term for raccoons, how their eyes shine in trees at night] and
“piefoot” [more slang describing the shape of raccoon hind feet tracks].
Interesting points to consider. Loved your “flat-footin’ fifty” explanation. I have heard “flat-footing’ it” often refer to running, so adding “50” makes sense . . . runnin’ FAST!
