Subject: BS: How old are we all? From: Will Fly Date: 12 Jan 11 - 04:47 AM Looking down the threads over several days, I've seen obits of 'Catters who've died, well-wishing threads for those unwell or recovering from illness, birthday threads of 'Catters of a good age - and I've thought to myself: what's the current age profile of Mudcat? Not that it matters - I'm just curious - but I'm sure that our overall age demographic influences the way we think of the world, and the musical world in particular. And the older members will bring a vast sum of musical knowledge to the debates. Well, I'm sure we won't get all the thousands of Mudcatter members to respond to this, but perhaps we'll see what happens... Shall I start? 67 in 2011. (Lady Mudcatters are allowed to shave their age.) I said AGE! |

Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 12 Jan 11 - 05:04 PM Just to add a little music into a BS thread, I wrote this back in in December, as a slow, melancholy blues: Looking out the window on a winters day Wondering what the future might hold. Will I still remember what I'm trying to say Now I've got to 60 years old. People in their 60s tell me life is fine. Maybe, but I think I'm gonna bide my time. 60 always seemed to be the end of the line When I was only 59 Should I act with dignity, be wise and sage? Or live a life that's wild and free? Try to find a woman who is half my age? I don't think that is really me. I'd like to think that when I live this life of mine, I will be maturing like a fine old wine Instead of growing old and grey before my time. I think I'll stick at 59, yeah, I wish I was still 59 So if they if they ask me I'll say I'm only 59 DC |

Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: JohnInKansas Date: 12 Jan 11 - 05:52 PM According to the genealogical charts I've been able to construct, my (paternal) grandfather was the longest-lived male "ancestor" in the tree. Assuming that I live that long, I'll take his title in about 7 months - unless I can dig up another ancestor who was actually healthy. If I can hold the title for ten years or so, I might consider breaking with family tradition and coming down out of the tree, although the ***** I see down in the grass doesn't suggest a really strong incentive to join the crowds there. Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 12 Jan 11 - 06:08 PM I very rarely think about how old I am. In fact, if someone asks me my age I have to work it out. First I have to remember what year it is now, which keeps changing. Then I have to remember which year I was born, which is easier, as it usually stays the same. Then I have to subtract one from the other, and adjust according to whether I have had a birthday recently . . . is it worth it? Only if it means I will qualify for something worthwhile, otherwise I really can't be bothered. |

Like everyone else, I feel about 30 in my head, but the rest of my body begs to differ. I very rarely get more nthan an occasional cold, but I now have "conditions". There's a wonderful little book called "Growing Old Disgracefully" by Rohan Candappa. It's my manual for when I have to admit to myself the passage of time. I have bought it for several of my friends. It doesn't deny ageing: it gives ideas for making the most of it, and turning it to one's advantage! My late husband had a tee shirt (now in the possession of my nearly 32 year old son) which says "I came into this world fat and bald, and I intend to go out the same way". He did. I used to have a badge with "39 and holding"...I think I need an upgrade! Andrea (59 and holding) |

Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: JohnInKansas Date: 14 Jan 11 - 01:47 AM The exact middle of the year is June 30/July 1. ???? There are 4 months with 30 days. Two are in the first half and two in the last half of the year. There are 7 months with 31 days. Three are in the first half and four are in the last half. The remaining month in the first half of the year has 28 or 29 days. January through June is 181 or 182 days. July through December is 184 days. The exact midpoint of the year is at 182.5 (noon on July 1) or 183 days (midnight July 1 or beginning July 2). I posted without rechecking my arithmetic, which was accurate then but imperfectly remembered now! As for old people counting, remember there are three kinds of people, those who can count and those who can't. |

He is only 2 years old and should live to be round about 15. Logically speaking, I should live to be 84 or so. My daughter just had her 49th birthday. Now,that is startling. Previous to this one, her 29th birthday was of the most significance to me because I remember so clearly when I turned 29. But 49? That is recent history! Someone once said that no matter how old you live to be, the first 20 years will always be the longer half. |

Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: DrugCrazed Date: 05 Jun 11 - 07:43 AM Yankee, as long as the day in October isn't the square of 5 I'll be fine. One person stealing my birthday is enough thank you. And you stole me from my innocent ways, and made me sit in a pub, drink beer and sing folk songs. Not that it's a bad thing... |
Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: kendall Date: 05 Jun 11 - 12:24 PM The only time I find the energy to run for a bus is when it is bearing down on me. |

Subject: RE: BS: How old are we all? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 05 Jun 11 - 08:41 PM Now old enough for concessions in some European countries where they don't kick in until 5 years after here. My own bus pass is coming up for 5-year renewal at the end of this month, but I still get suspicious looks from the drivers when I run for the bus. Following the advice given in song when I retired in 2006 - (may you stay) "Forever Young". |

From: Bob Bolton Date: 06 Jun 11 - 12:59 AM G'day all, I see that my friend Sandra in Sydney is looking forward to access to the PET (Pensioner Excursion Ticket) ... allows all day access to local (New South Wales ... particularly Sydney) public transport for small bundle of coins ... I ought to have been using one of them since last year ... except for some foolish addiction to working ... and, if I'm counted as still working if & when I cash in my several years owed Long Service Leave (let alone >2½ of retained sick leave ... I mightn't be travelling on little white tickets until the end of this decade! Then again ... I just mightn't ... be ... Hows the average doing? I started out feeling old and then got younger" I make a constant joke about the fact I'm only allowed at folk clubs because of the average. I think people are fed up of hearing it now, but when did that ever stop me. "Hey DrugCrazed. You are in for quite a ride. Mudcatters are great but they are also fucking nuts. Welcome to the club and enjoy yourself. But remember that resistance is futile." I'm well aware you're all nuts. Why else would I join up? ;-) |
