Subject: An Australian Folk Song A Day From: cloudstreet Date: 07 Feb 11 - 05:33 PM Inspired by Jon Boden's "Folk Song A Day", I have begun a similar project on this side of the world. An Australian Folk Song A Day began on January 26 (Australia Day). The plan is to post one song each day for a year. While occasionally cloudstreet songs may make an appearance, to date all but two of the songs have been songs that I have not previously sung or performed. Comments and suggestions welcome. John, are the songs available for purchase or on a Podcast feed? -Joe- |

Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: cloudstreet Date: 10 Feb 11 - 06:31 PM Thanks for that, Joe. At this stage, I have not yet tackled the idea of offering the tracks for sale or other download. I'll have a think towards the end of February. For now they are free. Cheers, John (who is now intimidated by the vast stretch of dates between now and the end of the month) |
Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: cloudstreet Date: 10 Feb 11 - 06:55 PM I have also now re-loaded three of the songs that I was parking at google sites. They now reside happily in the directory where the others live. I guess they misbehaved because they felt lonely. John |

Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Feb 11 - 07:23 PM Back in England, Jackie Oates has recorded "Past carin'" ... and I've just been at my local folk club listening to Ian Bruce singing "The banks are all broken they say..." Kitty |

Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: cloudstreet Date: 15 Feb 11 - 07:06 AM A couple of people have raised an issue with me about being unable to play the tracks. They use a flash-based player and so won't be playable on iphone or ipad. All other flash-capable machines should work. |

Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: Richard Mellish Date: 23 Feb 11 - 09:43 AM I've been singing Wallaby Stew (which in my indexes I call "Since Dad got put in jail) for years, having learnt it from a recording of one of Bert Lloyd's radio programmes, with some differences from the version posted by John on 19 Feb. In particular, verse 3, line 2 "He worked around the shearing shed and he certainly worked on her", which gives a stronger hint of the kind of work. I also swap the second halves of verses 2 and 3, as I reckon that flows better: problems with the farm in one verse, and procreation in another verse. Richard |

Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: Allen in Oz Date: 30 Jun 11 - 12:53 AM Gary Shearston sang a wonderful version of Wallaby Stew . I went something like this: " Poor old Tim got umpteen years inside as everybody knows" " For sucking on a stick of grass they give him denim clothes " " He loved high on a mountain top but they picked up on his trail" " And it's sad to relate the family fate since Tim got put in jail " etc AD |
Subject: RE: An Australian Folk Song A Day: John Thompson From: GUEST,Don Stevens Date: 30 Jun 11 - 04:45 PM John: I have been a 'fan' of Australian Music, since I served in the U.S. Merchant Marine, carrying supplies from Australia, to Japan, during the Korean War. Slim Dusty is my all-time favorite, although I haven't heard an Australian Folk/Country Singer that I haven't liked. Over the years, I've collected over a thousand Albums of Australian Music, thanks to Warren Fahey, and Dave De Hugard. I think that what you are doing, is FANTASTIC! Thanks so much. |
