Subject: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: 3refs Date: 28 Mar 11 - 09:48 AM This is why this is my last year. Had this been me, the headline would have read "On-Ice-Official hospitalizes player!" HOCKEY ASSAULT PROBED Barrie police say they expect assault charges to follow after an incident during a midget house league hockey tournament Sunday. Police were called to the East Bayfield Community Centre arena just before noon after an assault on a 20-year-old linesman. The assault occurred during a Barrie Minor Hockey Association tournament. Police said a 17-year-old player began swearing and gesturing inappropriately to the crowd after he received a penalty for tripping. The referee gave him a gross misconduct penalty and told him to leave the ice. At that point, the player dropped his gloves and repeatedly punched the linesman in the face. Police said the player was than forcefully removed from the ice and police were summoned. Police said the out-of-town player had left the arena before they got there. The linesman suffered minor facial injuries and didn't require medical treatment. Police officers are interviewing witnesses and viewing video in anticipation of laying charges. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Mar 11 - 10:51 AM Sounds like "I went to the fights last night and a hockey game broke out." |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 28 Mar 11 - 11:02 AM Disgraceful. I hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist in court and is banned from all league hockey for an appropriate period of time. I hope they put his picture in the paper and the video on You Tube in proper fashion (name, assault charge results...). |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 28 Mar 11 - 11:11 AM That's no way to react to a ref's call. You can question it, but you shouldn't assault the ref, or make rude gestures. Even if the ref is crooked and purposely making bad calls (it does happen), you shouldn't assault the ref. Question the call with respectful words. |

Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Beer Date: 28 Mar 11 - 12:34 PM I don't think a suspension will do much for a person like this. He will do his time of a few games and come back and do it over and over until someone is seriously hurt. Ban the bum for life. IMHO. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 28 Mar 11 - 01:08 PM A few games? I was thinking at least two years to go along with his probation. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: GUEST,Songbob Date: 28 Mar 11 - 01:47 PM "That's no way to react to a ref's call. You can question it,.." No, that's not allowed, either. You leave the ice for the penalty box without backtalk or questioning. It's a rule. Yes, some refs give a little leeway, but it's on the books and can (and is) enforced. Bob |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: 3refs Date: 28 Mar 11 - 03:14 PM The player has been banned from any hockey that falls under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada. This includes a lot of the "beer leagues" as they've tried to clean up their act in recent years! |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Beer Date: 28 Mar 11 - 03:21 PM That is good to hear. ad. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 28 Mar 11 - 03:27 PM Yes, it is good to hear. Was there a time period given? |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: 3refs Date: 28 Mar 11 - 03:31 PM I'm hearing "lifetime"! |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 28 Mar 11 - 08:46 PM Lifetime? For a 17 year old kid? Gee... I dunno. Yes, I realize there really is no excuse, even at 17, but "life" for a kid? Maybe that is the way it should be. It sends a clear and simple message. Zero tolearance. I suppose, if that helps stop such behaviour, that's the way to go. I still just dunno eh? |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Beer Date: 28 Mar 11 - 09:20 PM He is a kid I agree gnu who needs a lot of f...ing help. Let him play soccer instead or ping pong. There are many other sports he can get involved with. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 28 Mar 11 - 09:24 PM The great ref of years ago, Red Storey, made a call on a player on national TV. The player waved an accusing pointed finger under Story's nose on his way to the sin bin to serve his two minutes. Story did not call a misconduct. At the interview session after the game Story was asked why he had let the incident pass. Story laughed quoting the player: "Red, that's the best damn call you made tonight!" I guess things are not always as they appear but even if this kid was pissed at the ref why take it out on the linesman? |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: 3refs Date: 29 Mar 11 - 09:18 AM Red Storey, what an ambassador of sport! If he didn't play it professionally, he officiated it! Sometimes both! One of the best guys you'll ever be entertained by at a sports banquet. Similar story as the one above involving Don Cherry and I'm pretty sure the Referee was Bruce Hood. Don was standing on the bench with one foot up on the boards(we in the refereeing world still call that stance "a Don Cherry")screaming at the referee with this grass green velvet suit on. The ref skated over, looked up, pointed at Don and quietly said "Don, that's the nicest suit I've ever seen!" Skated about 15 feet away towards center ice, turned around, pointed at Don and yelled "And don't you ever forget it!". The whole rink thought he gave Don a good blast when it was nothing more than a complement(backhanded maybe?). |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Mooh Date: 29 Mar 11 - 10:37 AM Life? I don't know. The balance of the season, all of next season, mandatory counselling, and a criminal record would be a good start. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 29 Mar 11 - 11:56 AM "criminal record" At 17? A tad harsh, no? |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: gnu Date: 29 Mar 11 - 11:57 AM Oops... At 17? Can he be given such under law? |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: GUEST,999 Date: 29 Mar 11 - 12:18 PM While I agree that what the kid did deserves some sort of punishment, I can attest that he`s been doing what he`s seen many pros do to each other. Refs (linesmen) are part of the pro games he watches on tv or in person. I am not a big fan of Neil Young, but he meant it when he said You who are on the road Must have a code that you can live by And so become yourself Because the past is just a good bye. Teach your children well, Their father's hell did slowly go by, And feed them on your dreams The one they picked, the one you'll know by. Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, So just look at them and sigh and know they love you. And you, of tender years, Can't know the fears that your elders grew by, And so please help them with your youth, They seek the truth before they can die. Counter Melody To Above Verse: Can you hear and do you care and Cant you see we must be free to Teach your children what you believe in. Make a world that we can live in. Teach your parents well, Their children's hell will slowly go by, And feed them on your dreams The one they picked, the one you'll know by. Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, So just look at them and sigh and know they love you. What we have allowed children to see on the damned television has seriously polluted their minds, and this sort of thing is the price society pays for our negligence. They`re just doing what we have shown them or allowed them to see. |
Subject: RE: BS: On-Ice-Official assaulted From: Mooh Date: 29 Mar 11 - 02:27 PM So, at 17, if you're charged with assault, it doesn't come with a criminal record if the conviction sticks? Oh, on re-reading I see there was no mention of actual charges, though on the face of it, it sounds like assault to me. I'm a hockey fan, and this stick breaks my heart. Dave Keon, where are you? Peace, Mooh. |
