Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: freda underhill Date: 27 Apr 11 - 08:14 AM Thanks tunesmith, I've had a look and it does look interesting. I switched to a similar diet five years ago. Not quiote as strict but - no dairy except yoghurt, but still keep in some carbs, although greatly reduced + I don't have them at night. Protein = nuts, beans, tofu, tempeh. My health has improved significantly since adjusting. |

Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 27 Apr 11 - 07:50 AM I think that we can draw a comparison between people who eat meat - particularly red meat - and revel in the fact, and smokers who exclaim the joys of sucking smoke deep down into the lungs - and then adding the inevitable, "you've got to die of something!" Sure, we're all going to die, but chopping years off ones time on earth is pretty stupid! Also, those who follow a proper "green" diet will, I'm sure, stand a far better chance of being healthier in their later years. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 27 Apr 11 - 04:43 AM I have come to a conclusion that I do need some meat and fish in my diet along with a good amount of vegetables and fruit but wouldn't be too upset if I couldn't always have steak or red meat. On Easter Sunday I roasted a nice piece of pork with crackling which my boys both love but I hate crackling. I can do it fine but it's just that I have an aversion to fat, any fat and it is not because I am obsessed it is just the smell and texture, yuck, but everyone gets what they want from the joint plus it makes really tasty gravy. |

Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 26 Apr 11 - 12:34 PM Of course, if you ate like Campbell, Fuhrman and friends advocate then you certainly wouldn't be eating too much carbs, fat and sugar. Check out the link on one of my previous postings to a youtube video where Dr Fuhrman talks about diabetes. The posting is dated: 24 April - 10.45am |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: freda underhill Date: 26 Apr 11 - 10:50 AM I haven't eaten any meat since 1972, and I have diabetes type 2. Being vegetarian is not necessarily a fast track to glowing health. Too much carbs, fat, and sugar has just as negative effect as meat can have. and in moderation, I think it's ok (but you wouldn't catch me eating the stuff.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 26 Apr 11 - 08:46 AM A piece of meat approx the size of the palm of your hand 2-3 times a week is all the meat you need along with your veges. |

Goodness gracious.......How can you? Many people with cholesterol problems have them because of heredity. Matter of fact there are plenty of tragic cases like yours of health nuts who croaked because of unknown genetic problems, like Euell Gibbons............. I admittedly shortened my life greatly through smoking. If I lose another day or two because I love great food that's like a pea (or a pee for that matter)in the Grand Canyon. Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Apr 11 - 02:31 PM The stupidity of mankind leaves me gasping! All around us friends and relatives are popping off - usually, far too early - because of a range of "Western diseases". Along comes a whole army of nutritionists who say the "Western Diseases" are caused by our Western diet. One of these - T Colin Campbell - spends most of his adult life studying the effects of the Western diet, and then he gets involved in most comprehensive study of nutrition ever undertaken. And, then, guess what? Some idiot says he's probably talking a load of bullshit! Of course, the real bullshit is coming from the other side! Governments who daren't tell the truth because of the effect it would have on huge chunks of industry. Take the huge drug companies. Dr Joel Fuhrman - in the link I have previously, states that he can get people off diabeties drugs with a plant based diet. Now, ask youself why the government aren't going with Dr Fuhrman but prefer to let the drugs companies make a fortune with their drug sales. As Bob Dylan once said " money doesn't talk, it swears!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: Jeri Date: 24 Apr 11 - 02:00 PM If you were predicting that we wouldn't want to pay for and read a book we believed might possibly be bullshit, you did indeed call that right. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Apr 11 - 01:57 PM I finished off my original post by saying "I bet hardly anyone reading the above info will go out and buy the book... the that is surely food ( plant based, of course) for thought." Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Apr 11 - 01:37 PM I don't digest grass well either so maybe I need some cow probiotic supplement. 'Course most omnivores don't digest any green stuff well............Except those like me of Italian heritage. We digest dandelion greens quite well and dandelions will grow anywhere. Matter of fact there was an FBI operation to get rid of the Mafia in the United States by planting dandelions in the middle of the freeways. Didn't work though because too many innocent Italian-Americans were dying. I lost several Aunts and a slew of cousins........... Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: EBarnacle Date: 24 Apr 11 - 01:21 PM By the way, cows don't digest grass. The bacteria in their digestive system do. They break it down into nutrients for them. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Apr 11 - 10:45 AM It's not as if all this talk of meat vs veg is a matter of life and death! Hey, wait a minute! Surely that's exactly what it is! From what I have read- and experienced - I'm convinced that moving to a plant based diet, and rejecting meat/dairy products/junk food/processed food, is the best way to protect yourself against the horrors of cancer, heart disease, diabeties, obesity, arthirist etc. And,I believe the evidence is out there to back this up. Check this video out for just one aspect of why a plant based diet is the way to go. Youtube clip. Dr Fuhrman on diabeties and diet. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: Bill D Date: 24 Apr 11 - 10:18 AM "...no thinking man would do that but an anti-social idiot would!" Tsk, Tunesmith... I've met Catspaw, and I can assure you he's a VERY social idiot! But I do agree with him about 'preaching'. If we avoided everything that 'some' say is dangerous or unhealthy, we'd die or boredom if we didn't die of starvation. Eat what you wish, climb mountains, fight bulls, ...but don't complain. (I do NOT advocate smoking 'if you wish', as that has been proven to be totally unhealthy...whereas many meat-eaters live to be 99.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 24 Apr 11 - 09:19 AM When you talking nutrition, meat is very poor! But, the breakdown of healthty nutrition in green veg is amazing! |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: EBarnacle Date: 24 Apr 11 - 07:39 AM If it were only grass, there would be no disagreement. Grass, however, is a straw man, meant to be knocked down. Meat animals eat various grains, receive antibiotics and consume ground up offal. [You've heard of Mad Cow disease, haven't you?] There are very few places where you can buy grass fed meat at the same price as feedlot meat. In addition, the feedlot animals emit waste products which are higher in methane production than grass fed animals do. |
Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Apr 11 - 05:27 AM "There is no question about the amount of fodder needed to produce a pound [or kilo] of meat. " So can you tell me how much nutrition you as a human would get out of a pound of grass... :-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: catspaw49 Date: 24 Apr 11 - 12:37 AM Ya' know, I just get tired of being preached at as if I didn't know the score. I've known the score for a long time but in food I chose eating all things in some moderation although I sometimes go over the edge because I enjoy it. The health problems I have are related to smoking almost 100% and that was a dumbass choice. But I knew that too. Being a "thinking man" or making intelligent decisions has little to do with my life which I have enjoyed immensely. Passion on the other hand has everything to do with it. For 45 years I have ridden motorcycles because I love them.........perhaps you have read the statistics and studies. Obviously a "thinking man" would not be found on a bike. When I was younger I sailed a lot and often under adverse conditions when it was (for me) the most fun. And for the rest of my recreational time on spring and summer weekends I could be found strapping into specially built and extremely powerful cars filled with methanol fuel and driving in circles, often sideways. No "thinking man" does that, but passionate people often do. Passion and fun win out every time.......but that's just me. I read the studies and they don't always agree but it doesn't matter. If they wind your watch, good for you! Have at it but try not to preach on the subject. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Don't touch that steak! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 23 Apr 11 - 07:28 PM I've been an omnivore for years, but will probably have to become a vegetarian in the near future.
