You could do what I did: fly into Shannon, drive west to Dingle (we took a detour south to Cork), over the Conor Pass to Tarbert, take the ferry to Kilrush, along the coast through Co. Clare (Cliffs of Moher, the Burren) to Galway, then east through Athlone to Dublin.

We took a week to do it. Lovely scenery, great music and wonderful people all along the way. I recommend the Lonely Planet guide.

Dingle, as in where my dear ancestors are from? You can go to Garvey's supermarket and sit on Garvey's bench and stay at Garvey's bed and breakfast and I can recommend a very nice B&B by another name in the heart of Dingle..and the husband gives great archeological tours. There is a Garvey's pub somewhere. And Tom Crean's pub in Annascoul..might be a relative. It is totally beautiful there and full of old ruins and oman stones and viking stuff. I might be able to go there in September if my free ticket does not have too many fees added on. And there are Kerry cows here and there which are an almost lost breed but quite adapted to poor vegetation. So I vote that you go. There are not great buses but one goes from Tralee daily I think. mg

Some are literally the primrose path, little lanes lined with primroses..but not the main roads of course. They seemed sort of standard to me but I was on buses and did not drive. mg

Well, since Dingle is a fishing town there isn't much of a beach there. But Inch Strand is up towards Anascul and they used to do horse racing there in, I think, August.

You CAN drive...but since thee Irish drive on both sides of the road at once I'd suggest that Jacqui do the driving if you rent a car. Another way would be train to Killarney (stop in The Laurels for a pint and perhaps some singing and the Great Southern Hotel for an Irish Coffee, the best in the world in my opinion). Then take a BUS to Dingle. Leave the driving to someone else! And trust me on this -- if you DRIVE the Conor Pass Road you'll have far, far more to do than look at the scenery!

Naytheless, go. Visit Dublin first and get the big city outa your system. Then spend the rest of your time on the Dingle Pennisula -- Ballyferriter, for instance, is Really Deep Gaeltacht.

If you do go to Dingle, look across the harbor to the tower. To the right of the tower is a fence line. Follow that fence all the way down and the white house you see is my wife's family's Olde Homesteade -- they still own it and they turn trespassers over to the Gardi.

But you can get around pretty well by train and bus -- unlike the US. You might also include Cork, Kenmare, Baltimore, Tralee and
Kinsale (not to mention Sneem and the Slieve Mish Mountains) on your trip. Of course, north of there are places like Galway, Sligo, Limerick, and Kinvara. And there's always Waterford and Wexford and Youghal and Wicklow and Cashel and the Bru na Boine and Kilpatrick
and Downpatrick and Croaghpatrick and Kildare (where you can enter the Irish National Stud!) and....

Just go. A hint: fly there on Aer Lingus.

Once you are there though you could only go from Dingle to Ballyferriter twice a week by bus I believe..that is really where my ancestors are from..well, Dunquin, Ballyferriter, probably somewhere between in a place called Maumonorig I think near the Gallarus little stone chapel. I can send you an Mp3 of my song called pride of Dunquin if you would like..likewise a song about leaving Smerwig Harbor..in the area.    mg

There are also tour boats to the Blaskets (and the Skelligs if you're really that nuts). Read "Peig" and "Twenty Years A-Growing" (and stuff by Robin Flowers) to learn about the Blaskets.

Just three days in Ireland? What a shame.

As Peter says, Ryanair flies to Kerry Airport, but, unless you're willing to rise impossibly early to catch the daily 7.30am flight from London Stansted your only other option is the daily 11am flight from Luton. Catch the right train from St. Pancras and Luton's only 25 minutes away.

If you want to catch some great scenery and music sessions, I'd strongly recommend flying to Belfast, hiring a car and taking the coast road all the way round to Derry (from whose airport you can fly back to London).

I'm presuming you're going to be based in London or thereabouts. If not, you'll waste most of those three days travelling back and forth between the UK and Ireland.

WE will be looking at heading for Ireland from from my daughter's home in Newark, Notts. We really can't afford to spend too long in Ireland - funds and time constraints won't allow for it.

I think that the drive to Dingle from and back to Dublin, where we were thinking of staying, would be too much to do in a day. My memory of the roads in the South West was that they can be quite slow, that was about eight years ago.

To take the ferry from the UK we would have to drive virtually all the way across England and Wales, then spend just over three hours on the ferry. The cost for travel alone would exceed the total cost of a three night break with flights.

What we really need to know is roughly how long it would take to drive from Dublin to Dingle and whether there is a sensible route by public transport that won't cost us an arm and a leg.

Train to Tralee, but from there to Dingle. Irish Rail and Buseireann websites will give the cost and travel time. If you only have three days, you'll be wasting an awful lot of time travelling.

It's only 220 miles from Dublin to Dingle, Jacqui, but one hundred of those are on a motorway. The AA (http://www2.aaireland.ie/routes_beta/) reckons you can do this in 4hr 20min, but that doesn't take into account the time of day when you leave Dublin and all manner of hold-ups that might occur on the way. I'd bargain for six hours.

We flew Continental from Newark to Shannon, and from Dublin to Newark on the return trip. It was a smaller plane - 757, I believe - but it was fine. There seemed to be no problem arranging to arrive at one airport and depart from another. I don't know whether rental car companies would go along with that, though.
Can't say it would be a horrible thing to drive across Ireland twice, if you had to use the same airport for arrival and departure. Those narrow roads sure don't thrill me. I'm glad I wasn't driving. I've sworn I will never drive in Europe.

It a whole continent with a lot of different countries and a lot of different road infrastructures. You may have made a bit of a hasty decision, based on the irish roads as they were whenever you were here (a few motorway crossing the country and by passes avoiding towns along the way have been put in place during the past decade).

My main focus is to see some Irish country side, including Dingles Beach and Donnybrook. I would also like to hear some traditional Irish music.

Plenty of music in Ballyferriter and the general Dingle area.

Google Earth/streetview can give you a bit of an indication on what the roads and the countryside will look like along your route.

I think your best bet might be to ask around here and mutual friends and see if anyone in Ireland could drive you around for a couple of days in exchange for gas money and food and lodging. You could have a great time. Dave Ingerson I think is there right now but he has lots of contacts. mg

I think it's well worth considering using Ryan air to fly from Dub to Kerry and maximise your stay there. A lot more worthwhile than driving through the midlands. But then, I don't like driving very much.

We drove from Dublin to Killarney, and you are right, Jacqui, it is a long drive. The highway is very good though.

One thing to consider, though, is Kendall's age. I don't recall how old you are old friend, but it's difficult for those 75+ years to get insurance for a rental car in Ireland. I'm not even sure if one 75+ years old can rent a car. I guess Jacqui could drive though. Doesn't sound like you will have a lot of time to be driving around much though. Too bad, it's beautiful country all over but especially in the Dingle area.

I'm puzzled, Kendall. What do you expect to find in Donnybrook? It's only a rather middle- to upper-class suburb on Dublin's southside, clogged with traffic most of the day and home to overpriced restaurants, bars and shops. Unless you're planning on doing a broadcast for RTÉ, which is based there, I'd give it a miss.

Drogheda and Wexford are within easy reach of Dublin - plenty of music in both towns - or you could be in Galway, Sligo, Westport, Carrick-on-Shannon, Enniskillen or Donegal town within three to four hours.

Sad you've chosen Donnybrook over Dingle. The Dingle Peninsula (rather than the town) would seem to offer many opportunities for a "Song for Ireland" moment:-

If time constraints mean you can't get far from Dublin, the coast north and south and Dublin Bay itself have many attractions. Further inland Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains are worth a visit.

The Dingle penninsular itself is spectacular and well worth a visit. The roads are not all that bad, and the countryside you pass through makes the journey fly. Its a shame that the planning authorities in Dingle Town have allowed it to degenerate into a dirty smelly tourist trap, it used to be a delightful place to visit, with the highlight of catching a glimps of Fungi, the dingle dolphin.

I haven't been to Dingle for about 15 years but I'd suggest sacking Dublin altogether and going straight to the west coast. Dingle was lovely when we went (twice in one holiday as there was so much to see) and Inch Strand was like a piece of heaven on earth (not small either Spaw - a long, wide white sand beach); one of the best places in the world.

As for the driving I really wouldn't worry. Unless you're a really bad driver then the roads aren't so much of a problem. My stepfather helped build the M50 so that should be all right, and the smaller roads are full of interesting sights and views etc.

Flights from Midlands into Dublin are quite reasonable but anywhere else in Ireland the price is out of sight.We got the flight and the hotel as a package for $250.. total.
I hate to miss Dingle, but it just won't work this time.

Yes, Kendall, I thought the age limit was 75. We were going back to Ireland ourselves this year but my wife doesn't cotton to driving on the wee roads there so we are going to England and France instead. I've always wanted to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy, and we plan to visit the wee French village where my grandmother's family lived prior to immigrating to the U.S. Sorry for the thread drift. Got carried away. :>)

I know you will enjoy your trip to Ireland. If it weren't so far from Dublin I'd encourage you to visit Galway and the wee town, Clifdon, where my wife and I had a wedding blessing ceremony nine years ago.

My main drink is single malt; either Glen Livet or Glen Fiddich on the rocks.

Yes, Kendall, we have considered touring Ireland by bus (not train though)but only Northern Ireland. We were fortunate to see a lot of the Republic prior to my reaching the age of 75 (which I now consider to be quite young).

Kendall won't be driving - he's over 75 and that excludes him from being able to drive the rental. I think, since I will be doing ALL the driving on this trip (in England as well as Ireland) I'll settle for the easier route where I can.

Sorry, Kendall and Jacqui, but I think you're making a bum move.

The AA reckons you can get from Dublin to Dingle in four hours. I'd suggest it'll take you six and maybe more both ways (with refreshment and photo breaks).

The roads from Dublin to Dingle and back via Athenry pass through some of the blandest countryside in Ireland until you get past Tralee on the first leg.

If you want to see some really great countryside and seascapes, head up from Dublin to Belfast and then Larne (not great views on the way, admittedly), then take the Antrim coast road, the finest coast road in all Ireland. Aim for Cushendall on your first night and Johnny Joe's pub - a great place for music. Then carry on along the coast to The Giant's Causeway and the Bushmills Distillery. Take in Derry's city walls and then hit the splendours of Donegal. In Donegal you've two options: 1) follow the coast up from Letterkenny to Creeslough and then west via Dunfanagh, Falcarragh and Gortahork; or 2) cut inland via the Glenveagh National Park and Mount Errigal. Whichever way you choose you'll end up in Gweedore where Hudai Beag's pub in Bunbeg has a great Monday night session or there's Leo's Tavern in Meenaleck, home of the Clannad family - fine food and sessions at the weekend. Head south from there and you'll end up in Donegal town, worth a stop before taking the road back to Dublin via Enniskillen and the Fermanagh Lakelands.

The route I've suggested can be easily done in three days and, once you've left Larne, take you to some of Ireland's finest sights. The one you're planning will see you sitting staring at motorway junctions and cud-chewing cattle.

We sailed into Dublin from Hollyhead some years back. Stayed overnight in Swords (good session at a pub there) and then drove on to Listowel the next day. We were stopping in Listowel for a while but we did an easy day trip to Dingle via Tralee from there. It's easier than you may think provided you allow enough time. If you do go via Listowel be sure to visit Finuge. Home town of Sean MacCarthy. Whichever way you do it - Enjoy:-)

It probably would be 3 by road, there and back. Alternatively, I would say, but you are better asking a local, is flying from Dublin to Tralee and hiring a car there. Seems to be plenty of RyanAir flights headed that way.

Kendall, wherever you go, you will have a great time. Irish hospitality is no myth, they are a warm and very friendly people and the country is mainly beautiful and unspoilt. I first went in the seventies at the hight of the 'troubles' and we were pretty nervous about being English in Ireland. Well, we had nothing to worry about at all, Most of the Irish were very sorry for US! becuase we had to live in a country run by Thatcher and the tory party!!

Have a great time, you will come back with some wonderful memories.

After reading a report (which I found here by the way) stating that the 5T-engine has been stripped down for inspection last year and that there was work to do on the railtracks I was very keen to see with my own eyes what progress had been made since then. Today I finally had the chance to do so - here are the pictures, first some impressions of the track from Ballyard via the Basin to Blennerville:

I guess there is some renovation and resoration work going on which is why I said it MAY be operational. I would have thought it worth looking in to anyway.

This was supposedly an official site. However, I did not see a date that it was updated so don't take this as gospel.

I agree that train might be your best bet. Tralee was sort of a disappointment to me although I did not explore it..train station is big and you catch buses to Dingle from there..I will look those up shortly. If you stay in the B&B I mentioned (It is also one that Steve what's his name stayed in), the husband will take you on guided archeological tours..a bit heavy on where Ryan's daughter was filmed but very informative. he is a former police chief.

What you have to realize is that at least a few years ago there were very few local buses in Dingle. You could possibly hire the B&B guy for a private tour..I would recommend that strongly. He is very genial and knowledgeable and centrally located. Speaking of which, O'Flaherty's pub (located next to Garvey's supermarket) is right next door to their B&B. I personally heard good music there, but it was not life-transforming. Too many flutes. Other music I heard in Dingle was of the pleasant pub variety but nothing spectacular.

AT the moment we are in Dingle after a long a very hairy ride. We met ourselves coming a couple of times.
There is traditional music in a pub next door until 11:30 but don't know if we will last that long.
Our rental car is a Ford. I didn't know Ford made pogo sticks; it rides like a damned ox cart.

However, the meal we had in DUBLIN was one of the best I ever ate. The Guinness here is too good!

I'm on Jacqui's laptop and I hate it, so I won't have much to say until I get to a real computer.

Back from a nice meal in a local pub and just finishing off the bottle of wine we had with said meal. I needed that after the drive today - five hours. part motorway but then on N roads and through little towns. The last hour and a half making our way through the mountains on very windy roads with a few hairpin bends thrown in. I could not believe that the speed limit on this last part was 100kmph - 80 was my top speed and less than that, to the annoyance of the following vehicles, on a fair part of the journey. We'll do it all again tomorrow, in the opposite direction.

Himself wants to go to Blarney Castle tomorrow. Trust me, he is NOT going to kiss the Blarney Stone, but we will head that way. Then it's back to Dublin for a last meal at the superb pub we found last night.

We were lucky here with lodging - a nice place right in town and a very reasonable price, compared to other places here. Kendall has recited 'Song For Ireland' in Dingle and so is now on the giddy side of morose. He's also found a major error in the book he is reading. All is just about well in our world........

Glad you made it down to Dingle. Unfortunately when we were there it rained, and rained. We stayed at a nice B&B, though and enjoyed as much of Dingle as weather allowed. You're right, of course, driving in Ireland is a challenge for us Americans but I wouldn't take for the experience.

I did all the driving - according to the rental company Kendall was too old at 77 to be allowed to drive their car. I've driven in a lot of places and southwest Ireland is about the worst. We had to cover too much distance on narrow winding roads in too short a time. ending up behind a heavy slowed everything right down as there were few passing places, particularly in the glorified roller skate we were in.

The people were great - very friendly and helpful - but Ireland is an expensive place to visit and you need a fair amount of cash as universal use of credit and debit cards hasn't got there yet.

Kendall, pick up Peig Sayers' book about Great Blasket Island if you can. It will give you a great flavor and feel for the area. If the weather is fine, you might want to make the crossing to see Great Blasket. A Guide to the Dingle Peninsula is not only a great guidebook, but is full of myths and real history of the area. Many of the spectacular spots on the peninsula were scenes of magic, battle, and romance.
