From: Edthefolkie

Further to my moan about the ersatz "MS Removal Tool", I got a lovely e-mail yesterday purporting to come from HM Revenue and Customs, informing me that I was entitled to a £238 tax rebate.

Unfortunately their helpline is apparently SO busy that they asked me to click on a link which would open up a form for me to fill in.

Yeah, right. If anybody else gets this I suggest you delete it.

What? You mean it's REAL? Where's me money!

As ever, If it looks too good to be true, then it is..Just remember, years ago, before computers, None of this could ever happen, so, you never got bothered. Just ignore anything, no matter how professional it looks. If it's a bank/company.whatever, hone them up. It mght be true, and you might be due a rebate....Highly unlikely though. I just delete without opening.

What did I do wrong?

Well anyway, HMRC NEVER use email, so anything claiming to be from them is sinister.

And anyway, before you can get any repayment from my ex-employers you actually have to make a claim for it. They're not usually going to leap up and tell you you have an unexpected one coming your way ... and has already been said they will never email you about it!! (not yet anyway)

HMCR send you an email if you've filled in your self-assessment online. The email verifies that they've received your e-form. (You need their verification so you don't get fined for non-return of the self-assessment.) But I don't think they ever email people for any other reason.

Old news - this email scam has been around for years. HMRC have had a warning on their website about this for a long time.

And just in case you were in any doubt here is the message itself as on the HMRC website

It is, of course, a phishing scam.

What does HMRC stand for - HM Revenue and Customs - Her Majesty? Really? I thought they didn't actually have anything to do with the government any more.

??? I'm none too sure if that was intended as a rhetorical question or not, but just in case... yes , and no. Correct assumption about the name, and puzzlement about the second bit. All UK civil servants are employed by the Crown (not the Government)and work for specific Departments. HMRC is an example of a non-Ministerial department, which enforces Government policies and legislation.

Only the US requires a copyright notice and that is because it is in breach of its Berne Convention obligations. In all Berne Convention countries, copyright arises automatically and does not have to be claimed by notice or otherwise. The US is a renegade in this.

HMRC doesn't ask for bank details. They will, if you have paid too much, send you a cheque. don't be caught out by this scam or you might lose a lot more than the tax you've paid.

It's little wonder that they stick to the tradition of using HM when you consider that they also believe the new year begins on April 6! See this for an explanation. Never fails to amuse me. But you know what they say about small things and small minds :-)

Cheers
