Subject: BS: Favorite children's show? From: lefthanded guitar Date: 28 Apr 11 - 01:52 PM I recently discovered a kiddie show that I've been watching religiously and furtively, as I have no children in my life through family or work that are under the age of say, 21.But I am totally hooked on this show. It's called "Y" aka "Peep and the Big Wide World" and it is hilarious. It features three rudely drawn bird babies - a narcissitic, yet good hearted duck; a sweet chicken, and a questioning robin who has to learn to fly. They are friends and have all sorts of adventures, but it's the best thing I've seen since Rockie and Bullwinkle, yet no one seems to know of it. If you've seen it, please let me know, and let me know if any of you who also have no excuse to watch kid's shows are hooked are something. btw catters, the theme song of this show features BANJO music!! What could be more lovelier than that? |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: CapriUni Date: 30 Apr 11 - 12:37 AM Lefthanded Guitar -- Peep and the Big Wide World popped into my head as soon as I saw the title of this thread. For those who don't know: It's designed as an "introduction to science for pre-schoolers" But the humor is subtle and sophistacated. And for the interest of Mudcatters, the theme song is sung by Taj Mahal. And the incidental music is a light touch banjo. It never fails to cheer me up. The official website has video clips available online, here: Peep and the Big, Wide, World -- Videos |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 06 May 11 - 03:47 AM Sesame Street was my favourite of all time children's shows I would actually fake a sicky to stay at home and watch it especially knowing that Stevie Wonder would be on it. Back when I was tiny it was the Wooden Tops and Andy Pandy. But over the years there has been so many memorable children's programs it is hard to choose. Bugs Bunny & Co, Crackerjack, Magpie, Grotbags, Dangermouse, Rhubarb and Custard, the 'old' Scooby Doo cartoons, TISWAS and lately Pocchio (Stephen Fry) where the humour is quite subtle. Occasionally I still tune into Blue Peter and children's Newsround which is great to unwind with on Friday afternoons. |

Someone bought me a DVD of Bagpuss because I happened to mention it once so it was bought for a joke but have to admit if I have to stay at home with flu or something it gives me comfort while I am feeling sorry for myself. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: Donuel Date: 06 May 11 - 10:49 AM When Blue's CLues was on public TV I had a 5 year old son did not speak. He was glued to that show whenever it came on. Due to an autistic wiring problem in his speech centers it engaged him in a conversation that allowed him to participate without any self consciousness. Of course his other favorite shows were Jeopardy Wheel of Fortune and most of all WHo Wants to be a Millionaire. WHen he needed to speak to us in sentences he would use the computer and type out his thouts in Microsoft Word. SUre Sesame St was a big help but Blue's Clues had a special format that allowed him to converse mentally to the point that at the age of 6 he started vocalizing. At first is was word responses but the progress then became more rapid than a child of 3 or 4. It was a big deal when the main character on Blue's Clues went to college. |

"Ferb, shut down that cold fusion reactor, I know what we're going to do today!" I was in stitches. Send help. |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: catspaw49 Date: 07 May 11 - 12:26 PM The most enduring show by any standard in this house for my 19 year old D.D. son Tristan is "The Wiggles." For years I blew them off but Tris was loyal from Day One and Karen got me to watch them and see just how good they were with and for kids......and they really are. This group of Aussies have an energy that appeals to kids and several of the company have a background in childhood education. Tris and Karen have been to two live shows and I must tell you about the last one. They do a very active and interactive show often going up and down the aisles. The red wiggle named Murray was in Tristan's aisle and looked at Tris and went to him somehow knowing he was "special." He knelt next to him for a bit asking him if he was having a good time and saying he was "so glad you came to see us." Karen said that for that moment the only two people in the auditorium were Tris and Murray. He gave Karen a smile and moved back to the stage. Karen said it was obvious he saw Tris was special and knew just what to do. It was a touching moment for Karen and one neither she nor Tris will forget. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 08 May 11 - 04:30 AM Oh Patsy, yes, Watch With Mother! I adored the Flowerpot Men. And Andy Pandy. Kids today would be totally bored, I suppose, with such tame fare. No colour, gentle storylines, quiet and calming. Sigh... how times have changed! |

We had a couple of little girls visiting the other day, and we put on a tape of Camberwick Green, and they loved it. Don't despair, Eliza. It's not that the kids don't still like good stuff, it's that much of the time the programmers don't really like kids. |
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 08 May 11 - 11:02 AM Maybe you're right, McGrath. I used to play Max Bygraves 'Toothbrush Song' for my bottom Maths group if anyone got a good mark in a test. Those kids adored it, even though it was from way back in my own childhood. |

I had forgotten that one, didn't he have a magic collar, he was really cute but I can't remember it being around for very long I didn't think that anyone would have remembered! Eliza, Watch with Mother was the only children's program before the late afternoon and I remember tv closing down until then. I wonder what the young ones would do now if that happened and with no DVD player? |

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite children's show? From: clueless don Date: 09 May 11 - 10:30 AM I said earlier that I can't remember what my favorite children's show was, but I remember a show that made an impact, in terms of remembering it even though I was very young at the time. On this show (this would have been in the '50s), viewers were supposed to plaster a clear sheet of unknown material onto the TV screen, and then I/they would draw on the sheet with crayon, tracing lines that appeared on the screen. I think the show was called "Winky Dink", or something like that. Don |
