Someone on another thread was bemoaning the fact that you can't buy "mouse-flavoured" cat food. That got me wondering...

What do mice taste like?

"Just like chicken," of course - and chicken is just like rattlesnake, and alligator, and frog, and rabbit.....

I like beef. Don't trust that other stuff.

No, that's chicken John.

The white chocolate ones are nice. When I was younger we used to get ones made from sugar with string for tails.

Probably why most kids of my generation hadn't a tooth in their head !

There was a fellow who set out to prove his theory that wolves in the great north lived mostly on mice and other small prey, and claimed to have lived for a year himself, consuming nothing but mice, just to prove it was an adequate diet for "large animals."

One might suppose he could offer a fairly authoritative opinion on the nuances of mouse flavors.

There is the possibility of some bias, however, since he reported the easy capture of sufficient mice because they were eating all the stuff he brought to his remote cabin - and would otherwise have eaten, so the mice he ate may have been on an atypical diet not representative of the finer points of "wild mouse" flavors.

Based on significant observation of cats, and experience with satisfying the dietary preferences of same, I would venture that the idea that cats (in general) have any sort of preference for "mouse flavor" is not particularly accurate. My observation is that cats will eat, with a degree of apparent relish, anything that wiggles. Mice are among the larger "wiggly things" consumed by the typical house or barnyard cats, but cockroaches, spiders, houseflies, horsefiles, earwigs, cicadas and almost anything else that "runs" and can be caught apparently is equally tasty. Our own cats showed a pronounced liking for rabbits (cottontail) for a time when the had access to them, although (fortunately) despite their best efforts I don't believe any ever managed a squirrel.

Only the cat the caught the mouse generally will eat it. A dead mouse is of absolutely no interest to the other cats in the household (usually).

Yeah, the guy that went to the Far North and ate mice for a year was the author Farley Mowatt. I guess I should contact him to get the definitive answer to my question.

Having caught and eaten many mice, I would say that they all taste sort of piquant but with a touch of a grassy aftertaste when they are outdoor mice, but they're not all the same. A healthy and active mouse has a much peppier and more vibrant taste than an unhealthy or debilitated mouse, and indoor mice sometimes taste quite dusty and unappealing. In the case of a mouse which is seriously lacking in good taste the best thing to do is decapitate it, swallow only the head, and deposit the rest at the feet of your staff ("owners") who will grumpily dispose of the remains. Pay no attention to their dramatic bitching and complaining. The truth is, they love the attention, and they admire your hunting skills.

In places where the country folk eat just about anything, the invariable reply to "what's that taste like?" is "tastes just like chicken."

There's no particular reason why mouse should be any different, although it might depend a little on what (or how many) parts of the chicken one eats.

In my (current) part of the country there is universal agreement that "there are seven different flavors in a chicken," so knowing that it tastes like "something in a chicken" isn't really much help.

There also is zero agreement on what those seven flavors in a chicken are, and trying to pin anyone down on where one of 'em can be found in a chicken is likely to start a brawl.

There is also "Three Screams" which is with newborn mice. The diners would order mice that had just been born and a plate of sauce. The baby mouse would scream first when a diner seized it with a pair of chopsticks. It would scream a second time when it was dipped into the seasonings and its last scream was emitted as it entered the diner's mouth.

So, I've eaten (apart from the usual meats) deer, elk, bison, whale (a VERY long time ago), squid, octopus, rattlesnake, goat (domestic and wild), dog, mountain lion, alligator, beaver (the animal kind), muktuk, squirrel, rabbit, bear, wild pig (javelina), and various types of fish and bugs. That I remember, that is. My brother has also eaten rat and pine squirrel.

Well, I know what a mouse nest smells like- kind of close and musty - so I imagine a mouse tastes kind of like that.

Last week I had a mouse - don't know yet if I had/have more than the one - and my Chinese Crested (Hairless) dog caught and kiltit. He buried it in his blankets. He watched me solemnly while I unearthed it and picked it up for disposal, but he didn't seem emotionally attached to it.

In Farley Mowat's book, I remember that living on a straight mice diet caused him to begin with deficiency problems. This fixed itself when he stopped skinning-and-gutting them.....

There can't be an awful lot of meat on a mouse so you would have to prepare quite a few to make a meal with but with a little virgin oil herbs and garlic, say four to a kebab on the barbie it should work out quite well. Now I know what to do when the burgers run out in future!

It probably has a similar protein content as a rabbit, not much.

My cats don't actually eat the mice they catch. They just kill them and leave them in inopportune places. Assuming this is typical behavior for well-fed housecats, I don't think mouse-flavored catfood would go over very well. I'm afraid cats would be more likely to deposit a mouthful of the stuff beside the bed where it would be stepped on early in the morning than to actually eat it.

"Never Cry Wolf" was made into a movie by Disney. It's very much worth the watch. The cinematography is breath-taking and there are some very funny, and sad, moments. One of my top three films of all time, even with some of the inaccuracies.

If you do get the chance to see it, one thing that many people do not know... how to put this so it doesn't spoil the scene... just before the engine on the Beaver cuts out, Roosie shuts the fuel valve. If you don't know anything about the plane, you don't get the "real" joke.

never cry wolf is hardly accurate. the do call him "fairly knows it" but if you live on wild flesh as you main deit you do have tomeat the whole thng and most of te blood and offal raw. the raw blood and offal will give you the vitimans and mineral that you would get from plants down south. raw blood is teeming with vit c b and many others. not my cuppa but in a famine i might get used to it.

i ad a partiall wild cat come and live with me for years. she liked mice a lot. and any other little creature she could catch.she would travel up to ten miles from home regularily when i lived in the rockies. i'd see her in the far and odd places every so often. she'de come home after a feew days. she volenteered to live with me so she came back, especially as she got old.

she liked the intestines and kidneys and other offal i got from the local butcher best. i'd cook it and add yeast veggy paste and vitimins and she'd purr like like an enginewhen i was cooking a batch. but she never stopped mousing. even fed her kittens

Well, I almost said some more in my post above but the movie is good and I highly recommend it simply for the reasons I stated.

As far as Mowatt is concerned, my uncle worked at a NWT weather station not far from him when he was there. My uncle had very little good to say about him and considered most of his writings bullshit and written for the sole purpose of making a buck. That is the same opinion held by a lot of Atlantic Canadians in regard to his bullshit with the seals and that Neffie whale.

He came within an inch of being lynched in PEI and da Newfies ain't too fond a im needer eh.

But, if ya get a chance to see the movie, go for it. "Good idea." >;-)

mowatt does say some very insightfull things about or abuse of the enviornment but he isn't very accurate at times.

i like they guy, i met him a couple of times, and i like the movie.

he was very condemning of the abuse to our ocean resources in his book "sea of slaughter" and that made him very unpopular. " a whale for the killing "made him equally unpopular, but on both cases he was right. i don't think he's right about the seal hunt --they are so far from endangered, that we have much bigger issues, but he can't be right all the time. its his opposition to the seal hunt that made him so unpopular in pei.

he was also right about the famine among the inuit in the district of keewatin in the forties. ottawa was ignoring the famine and he was a government worker up there and kept using government resources to tell them people were starving--he got fired, and the inuit starved. so i try not to be too critical.

in the seventies there was starvation in biafra. the inuit of old keewatin signed over all their money, back accounts welfare cheques etc, to send to biafra, because they were people who experienced their friends and family starving to death. this embarrassed the canadian government to pony up the money and return the inuit donattions. they were poor but remembered starvation well. things like taht should be rememered when you chow down on a gormet meal of mice!!!

Porkies taste sweet but I woulldn't use a quill for a toothpick as they crawl through their own feces every time they leave and enter their nest. I've seen nests that had so much of it piled up that they had to make a trench to get in and out. Still... in the dead of winter, when yer hungry and ya ain't got but a axe, they're fine dinin.

I am not the only one who was hungry back in the woods. Lots a folks ate porkupine, moose, deer, bear, trout... how ya kill em is secondary. Of course, bear and trout ain't easy with an axe. However, an axe certainly can be used for bear and for trout but they are "involved" processes involving large trees and gravity.

Tlingit feller up around the Juneau area was out huntin' with a buddy one winter and they found a hibernatin' grizzly bear. Feller decided to kill it like his ancestors used to, so he clobbered it with an axe. The bear woke up and the feller ended up in the hospital for a considerable period.

MORAL: A .338 Winchester (or more) is better for huntin' bear than an axe, if ya got a choice, but it's better jist ta leave 'em alone.

Killing hibernating bears was done as a matter of common practice by my ancestors just two generations back. It was an easy and cheap method of keeping the bear population to a minimum in close proximity to their farms and of putting food on the table. Pelts were sold for cash in the spring.

Nowadays, they put food on the table by guiding rich "sports" in bear hunting. I am torn by this practice. I realize the need to cull the bears but most of them are shot as trophies and the meat and hide are not "used". I find it sad, but I understand why they do it. I do NOT understand why the rich sports do it.

Anyway... I ate a squirrel once which might be similar to a mouse as it's rat with a bushy tail... I would rather starve.

I don't see a need to kill anything that is a) something you won't eat, and/or b) not bothering you. IF I were to go bear hunting (bare hunting is too damned cold!) I'd take the meat and the hide -- I don't "trophy" hunt. And while I might joke about things like dynamiting fish I'd never do it unless there was NO other choice -- there usually is.

"Bothering" includes spreading germs and feces around, contaminating my food, and stuff like that. If I have mice in the house (and we don't) I use a 12-gauge with #7 shot or hydrocyanic gas or both. Flamethrowers also work well but are hell on the drapes.

The oldest material I remember was from the middle ages. They have at least one book containing a number of recipes (prescriptions?) for precisely how to prepare and eat mice to cure any number of common ailments.

"Lobscouse and Spotted Dog" offers reciped from Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey Maturin novels, including rats in onion sauce. They suggest subsituting rabbit, if rat is not available. Apparently they taste the same.

My mother made the best beef stew I have ever eaten. She cooked it in a pressure cooker, so the vegetables were just tender enough, and you could taste everything. It was sublime, and ruined me for everyone else's.

Two years ago, I went to Cherokee, NC. for the Indian Festival, with a friend of mine. One of her Cherokee friends offered us bear stew. His own recipe, from a bear he had killed. I approached it with fear and trepidation, but I wasn't going to be rude and refuse. It tasted just like my mom's beef stew! I asked the guy where he'd found my mom's recipe.

Perhaps my memory plays tricks on me. However i seem to remember a news story about a restaurant in Holland that specialised in breeding rats for the table. It never really caught on for tourists like marihuana cafes, pornography, football hooliganism, and legalisd prostitution - but I wonder if its still there.

They perhaps had a mouse starter. Mouse Mousse - like vichysoisse. Mouse Cocktail - a fricassed mouse on a bed of kos lettuce with rose marie mayonnaise. Tails of mice.... a bit like tails of lobster, only smaller. Mouse bhaji....well you're probably having that anyway, without knowing about it. Barbecued ribs of mice.

There's a book called "Unmentionable Cuisine", which deals with various foods that are eaten around the world, with commentary on why some people would find some foods repulsive and many recipes. One recipe from France is for mice and cream. It's a real recipe, not made up for the book. It dates back to when the nobility owned all the livestock and wild game, and the working folks were reduced to eating vermin (which explains why people still eat snails and squid).
My point is that someone should be able to answer the question that started this thread, providing they visit this website.
I don't own the book, the copy I read belongs to a friend, so I can't give you the recipe.

People are trying all kinds of weird things like poisonous fish, animal innards, winkles, whelks not to mention the rude and nasty bits of animals these days no-one turns a hare...ahem sorry hair. You hear a scream one day and find you ;oved one cowering, a giant squid just ran across tha kitchen floor, she says, I thinks its there behind the cooker...!

And you can see its little Giant squid eyes - he knows he's cornered.

You know that he's there behind the cooker having sex with other giant squids - in less than an hour, there will be an established colony. You'll open the fridge and there's sucker marks on the butter, everything smells of squid, the spoon you eat your ice cream has got traces of black squid ink. Its been in the knife and fork drawer!

Next week you'll be sat down having a bag of chips and a tentacle will come over the back of the sofa.....

Give in! You try it and tell us. I used to go to a Chinese restaurant, that got done by the authorities for having mouse droppings everywhere. From that, I can tell you that mouse shit is pretty good seasoning. Unique even. But i don't go there now.

Mind you there used to be this brilliant place for doing spare ribs on he Coventry Road out of birmingham. We all used to wonder why the spare ribs had this terrific flavour - then one afternoon we were walking past and saw a cat fast asleep in the basket of the deep fat fryer - it did make you think, what else had been asleep in there?

Joe, rabbits are lagomorphs, not rodents.

If you have giant squid in your house, you could have some fairly complicated problems! Giant squid eat not-so-giant squid, and not-so-giant squid like crustaceans. I think the first thing you should do is check down the back of the sofa fOR crusty things that might have fallen, although you may not find any because the smallish squid have all eaten them. If course if you don't see any of the more modestly-sized squid, the giant squid are going to be VERY hungry. The only thing left for them to eat is... OMG!!! GIVE THEM THE DOG AND GET OUT OF THERE NOW!!!

Never eaten mouse. I would were it necessary. I`ve eaten squirrel--both grey and red--and muskrat. Meat tastes like meat. The flavour of the meat will often depend on what the animal`s been eating. (For example, corn-fed raccoon tastes like shit, imo.) I expect mice would be ok provided ya spiced them a bit. There wouldn`t be too much fat on them, so likely slow cooking with some vegetables, pepper and garlic would help the little tykes get tender. I don`t think we`re gonna see mice or voles at the local supermarket anytime soon, but ya get hungry enough, and meat is just meat.

Or did you mean meat can taste like meat if you spice the crap out of it? Which, IMO, you would have to do for red squirrel on accounta it tastes worse than crap.

Mice take a lot of preparing - they're a delicacy, though the foetuses can be eaten raw in lieu of caviar by the poorer classes who aspire to impress their guests with something truly exotic. What do mice taste like? Depends what you feed them on; a chocolate-fed mouse is going to taste different from one fed on grain, but mice have a very sweet tooth so chocolate's best I'd say. Cheese? No chance, but marinaded in milk overnight and shallow fried in butter a young mouse makes a crunchy breakfast treat.

The first search led me to Steve's post, which got me to thinking about the "bug day" workshops ex hubby used to lead and in which I never participated because of my own deeply imbedded prejudices that would not allow me to overcome aversion, and the seeds of another long-winded post that no one wants to read.

Found the wit so entertaining and a fine example of Mudcatters at play. I thought it worth resurrecting, and not ruining with my own loss of playful instinct. The enchilada recipe doesn't specify how many mice it takes for one serving of mouseburger.

The recipe you linked to calls for one mouse per tortilla, Janie. Looks tasty. But then I really like Mexicanish-food. The whole "dressing the carcass" thing confuses me. Yer really undressing it. Kinda like driving on parkways and parking on driveways. Bon appetit.

After ya dress it, whatddya dress it with? I looked in Sobeys today but they only have dressing for chicken and turkey. Me, I don't bother with dressing any more. Just an onion cut in two and covered with summer savory. Even them McClaren's pickled onions would be too big eh?

That'd be a weekend, Al. You and Gnu together. Take a guy one long time to get over that, I'd say. Well, I have said so I should have said I do say. Say, consider it said.

I bet Thoreau was sitting by the pond with his axe and and a few succulent mice, just there for the chopping.

Kerouac in his cabin in the mountains in Dharma Bums, with his axe...

George Washington with his axe. Thinking what's first this morning ....the cherry tree, or a few mice for the table.....

Really its the American dream....
