Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Midchuck Date: 26 Jul 11 - 07:19 PM Looks like I'll be going, for the first time. Alone, this year, since Kris has signed a contract to teach one more year. Prob'ly drive the van down. Kendall & Jacqui threaten to come to our place, leave their car here, and ride down with me. If I sleep in the van I can fore and snart all I want. And I can lock it up when I go to sleep and none of these dangerous-sounding wimmen will bother me, maybe. Peter |

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Beer Date: 26 Jul 11 - 09:39 PM I'm not saying yes and I'm not saying no. What i can say is that i would love to go but a 40th anniversary is something i just can run from. 41 No problem. Sometimes folks want to surprise or have a get together for that number. i know that Judy (wife)would have no qualms about me going but i would not feel right. However as time gets closer and if things look as if it will be "Just another year" I will take a look at getting on a plane and make my way there. A couple of things i would like to know and I'm sure they have been mentioned in previous threads but I'm not going to start searching, so help me here. 1) What is the name of the airport that I would be arriving at? 2) How far from the airport to the camp site. 3) Do i bring my guitar? 4) Cost was around $300.00 and does that cover everything? Joe, I will bring Judy's garden picture book if I go. If not than I will be there next year. ad. |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Bill D Date: 26 Jul 11 - 10:12 PM Closest airport is BWI ....about an hour? away?..(pretty easy drive...ask those who come that way.) You either bring guitar or make friends fast! *grin* Cost includes food, lodging and all the music you can survive.... |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Beer Date: 26 Jul 11 - 10:25 PM Thanks Bill. What does BWI mean? |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: maeve Date: 26 Jul 11 - 10:34 PM Adrien, it's the Baltimore Washington International Airport. I hope you can go. |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Beer Date: 26 Jul 11 - 10:39 PM Thank you maeve. I didn't even know it was in Baltimore. Now for another stupid question. The money for the event goes for what besides paying for musicians. |

From: maeve Date: 26 Jul 11 - 10:59 PM West River United Methodist Conference Center West River Conference Center (West River,MD)on Chesapeake Bay September 30 - October 3, 2011 Here's the link to the FSGW website (Folklore Society of Greater Washington); hosts of the Getaway (This link actually works; sorry about the dead-end one a few days ago.) And on that page you'll find this link telling about the Getaway itself: http://fsgw.org/myorgnet/public.php?Org=fsgw&ProgramID=8&NoTitle=1 As I understand it, the fee pays for your stay and your food as well as other expenses. Bill or Nancy King or Charlie Baum could tell you more. |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: saulgoldie Date: 26 Jul 11 - 11:08 PM You know, I can pick up at any of three local airports, and carry one body and its sleeping bag and instrument no larger than a large guitar. I am mobile in Montgomery County. I can pick them up wherever, as along as we get to the camp by starting bell on, what is it, Friday? (Oh, wait, there'll be luggage. Hmmm. Well, we'll figure that out.) Thing is, it's a sports coupe two-door. Yeah, I think we should be able to work it out. Yeah, it's out there. No obligation other than to refrain from editorializing about my driving (and agree with me on everything we talk about, including the 1954 definition). (I'm actually pretty darn good!) Oh, and to be on time, of course. American time. Not Unitarian time, Country time, Arab time, Latino time, Jewish time, or any of those other times that don't truly mean what they indicate. I don't want to miss a single minute of it! Saul |

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: ClaireBear Date: 27 Jul 11 - 12:00 AM I went out on a limb and arranged to fly in on the Wednesday night red-eye, on the theory that for once, I'd (A) not be brain-dead on Friday and (B) be there in plenty of time for whatever pre-Getaway bash/sleepover might take place Thursday night. Now...is anyone thinking of having one? No pressure... |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: GUEST,Dani Date: 27 Jul 11 - 06:21 AM Chance.... I'm speechless! HATE that you guys will miss! How do we keep missing each other!? We need an NC mini=Getaway, y'all.... Dani |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Bill D Date: 27 Jul 11 - 01:29 PM "Now for another stupid question. The money for the event goes for what besides paying for musicians." NO $$$ goes to pay musicians. This is not about having stars. It is a shared weekend, in which SOME participants have become well-known...and who often lead workshops or give mini-concerts, but who otherwise are just part of the crowd. You never know who might be sharing a late-night song swap with you.. ;>) Some folks whom we don't see often are invited guests, and there is a limited fund for 'scholarships', but no one is 'paid', except for defrayed registration costs. The $$$$ goes to rent the camp and deal with incidental expenses. (We used to make a decent profit in the very old days, when we used a **rustic** public campground and the rental cost was light...but it was cold and primitive...and we were younger) |

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: skarpi Date: 27 Jul 11 - 03:07 PM good for you Amos , I am not coming as my bank has threaten me to go bankrupted if I don´t do a plan for this fall , for three years . Strange that the people who got Iceland on its head , get to go free and live in London and Luxemburgh with all the money they stole , while I and the rest have to pay our loans ten time s back . so now I also making a side plan to lay some money each month for a trip to Getaway 2012 . so while you are having good times at the Getaway this year , I will think of you as I will be working . so sing me a song drink a bowl and behave . love you all all the best Skarpi Iceland . |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Beer Date: 27 Jul 11 - 03:28 PM Bill D, Thank you for that explanation Very informative. Ad. |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Amos Date: 27 Jul 11 - 03:39 PM The song, and the bowl, are not a problem whatsoever, good Skarpi. Putting up with your absence for another year, more of an issue. Go back to your bank accompanied by a mean-looking Norwegian and ask them to reconsider! A |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Nancy King Date: 27 Jul 11 - 03:39 PM Amos -- glad to hear it! Skarpi -- Too bad -- we'll miss you once again! Adrian -- Another correction to make: the cost is NOT "around $300." The top price is $226, for a non-FSGW member for 3 nights, for a lower bunk. Cost is less for members, for a shorter stay, or for those willing to deal with an upper bunk. The money goes for the camp, some other costs such as snack food, printing, etc., plus a small amount for FSGW. As Bill said, we do NOT pay any performers. Our invited guests get free admission, and that's all. By the way, the price list and a link to the registration form are now on line, here. You can register on line, or print out the form and mail it in. --Nancy |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Genie Date: 27 Jul 11 - 04:25 PM As an aside, does anyone know whether the 2012 Getaway will be the first weekend in October too? The fist full weekend in Oct. 2012 will be Oct. 5-7 (8), so I'm guessing that will be the weekend, but it would help to know if the Getaway 2012 might possibly be Sept. 28-Oct. 1. Genie |

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jul 11 - 04:18 AM I'm thinking of spending Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday in the museums in DC, but I need a place to stay. I used to stay at cheap government rates at a great place on Dupont Circle, but the bargain rate I found there is now $299 a night. Is there anybody within a one-mile walk of the Metro, who'd be able to spare a room and parking for a poor, lonely California Wisconsinite on Wednesday and Thursday nights? -Joe- Bill and Rita have offered me lodging, so I'm all set. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: MMario Date: 28 Jul 11 - 09:05 AM *sigh* have tried three times this morning to sign up - but after identifying me the site does not allow me any other options. If I click on "select items" it says "done", but nothing ever appears. |
Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: Nancy King Date: 28 Jul 11 - 09:16 AM MMario -- *Sigh* indeed. I was hoping the on line sign-up would work better this year. Last year it worked for some and not for others. No idea why. At least *I* have no idea why. I'll let the registration and website folks know you're having a problem. Meanwhile, you can print out the registration form and mail it in. Or wait a while and see if they can fix it. Sorry! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Who's coming to Getaway 2011? From: MMario Date: 28 Jul 11 - 10:08 AM Where did my response go? I said (in a previous incarnation of this post) But I donwanna! Wanna doit online! Because getting to the PO is a royal pain - and the USPS in it's wisdom has taken away ALL the drop boxes that used to be on my direct route to and from work. You would think that in almost 40 miles; passing through on the main streets of no less then 6 villages there would be ONE mailbox? Nope. Nada. And they wonder why the USPS doesn't make a profit... |
