Maybe this should be "tech" but I find the BS crowd more "educated". And, that comment shouldn't bother any snooties above the line as they don't asscociate with the lower caste.

Argo, what kinda speakers should I buy for my PC that will rock when I watch vids?

Altec .... resonably priced .... exceptional sound quality .... I went to the Future Shop prepared to drop my $$money$$ on a set of Bose .... some kid that worked at the store turned me onto this set of Altec ... half the price of the Bose ... extremely happy with them.

Anyway .... that's my 2 cents worth in regards to computer speakers.

ZonePlayer S5 by Sonos

Read the review by Mossberg in the Wall Street Journal

online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704398304574597983573721474.html

Heard it recently in a 5,000 SF home. A gaint two story with concrete walls and marble floors throughout.
ASTOUNDING. Speakers can go anywhere and opperate independently....i.e. lulaby in the nursery and "Who Let The Dogs Out" in the den ... while the kitchen plays a pod-cast recipe. MUCH Better sound than BOSE.

Plays ALL formats including I-Tunes.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

This is what I will get. Best quality sound - sound that you would expect to pay a whole lot more for.

Most are shit. Connect an old Hifi amp (you have renewed your Hifi Amp in the last 20 years, right?) and some old Hifi Speakers.

"renewed your Hifi Amp in the last 20 years, right?"

Nope. Went with a couple of cheap small boomer combos. One up, one downstairs. I have the old speakers for end tables. The flood kinda messed stuff up eh.

I have a pair of old Nicole SD969 speakers that I've had for about 15 years. 4 times the size of most computer speakers, tweeters and midtones, built-in amp. If you see any for sale, (and I don't think they are still made,) grab them.

With a computer I bought from Dell several years ago, I added an Altec set of speakers, four small ones and a big woofer which sets on the floor. Excelent! It is hooked into my current Dell desktop. Must be ten years old now.
I often listen to music on it when I am on the computer. Of course not comparable to my amplifier and speaker system with CD, VHS, DVD, monitor units but a spent more than a few bucks on that (too much, my wife insists).

Gurney reminded me, at a housed flea market here, a fellow has lots of used, tested equipment- audio, computer, etc. Worth checking "pre-owned" dealers.
At the same market, I bought a very good turntable which I use with my LPs. At a fraction of the cost of a new one. In my bedroom, I added, to a combo tabletop unit, two flea market speakers, large multispeaker with fine cases, for $10 each.

Let's all remember when considering what advice to offer that gnu's getting so old that he probably can't hear the full frequency range of a talking teddy bear, so anything that costs more than about $3 probably is overkill. (BTDT - years ago)

(Or maybe he just talks like an O.F. sometimes.)

Even if one has lost top end hearing, a decent bass, and smooth response (as far as one can have one with encoded MP3 and M4A audio which innately sounds "grainy" - it's the next step down the ladder from master tapes at the top, vinyl next jostled by good quality FM radio - there's a lot of crap FM radio about but the old BBC Radio 3 concert broadcasts were GOOD - CDs third: I don't count cassette tapes because there is just too much hiss and hum however you slice it).

So if the old HIfi speakers are still there doing double duty at table legs (I think that's what was said) get a second hand hifi amp. Off Freecycle it will be free (doh) out of a local paper cheap, garage sale very cheap, pawnshop or similar likely cheap (but beware of pawnshops, I saw one near here fraudulently advertising a lovely old set of Wharfedale Airedales in corner cabs as "3 to 400 watts" when the old Wharfedale W15FRS woofer was in fact 40 watts), or even ebay or craigslist.

Logitech Z4 does well enough for me at my computer desk.

In the living room where the PC is attached to the tv and we watch tv/video/listen to music, we have a pair of Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.1 active monitors and a Samson Rubicon R10s active sub.

Before that, we had a Marantz hi Fi amp and (I forget the make - Sony?) speakers.

Oh, btw, I don't think much of the free mic on my link to the Wharfedale speakers. Although not as bad as my Superlux, it's still quite "karaoke". My £60 Sennheiser e835 is much nicer...

Have look at the logitech range on places like Amazon
I have a good logitech system around 80w RMS the people next door tell me they can hear the bass at 1/2 power .
Output required depends on the size of the room, 10w per channel is normal living room output on up to 42" TVs, anything above that for normal music listening is generally OK for us seniors

Our living room is about 6x5 meters. Listening on my own (parents would usually have it quieter), I'm probably about 1/2 power with the set up we have.

On their website, Crown suggest:

Nearfield monitoring: 25 W for 85 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks), 250 W for 95 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks)
Home stereo: 150 W for 85 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks), 1,500 W for 95 dB SPL average (with 15 dB peaks)
Folk music in a coffee shop with 50 seats: 25 to 250 W
Folk music in a medium-size auditorium, club or house of worship with 150 to 250 seats: 95 to 250 W
Folk music at a small outdoor festival (50 feet from speaker to audience): 250 W
Pop or jazz music in a medium-size auditorium. club or house of worship with 150 to 250 seats: 250 to 750 W
Pop or jazz music in a 2000-seat concert hall: 400 to 1,200 W
Rock music in a medium-size auditorium, club or house of worship with 150 to 250 seats: At least 1,500 W
Rock music at a small outdoor festival (50 feet from speaker to audience): At least 1,000 to 3,000 W
Rock or heavy metal music in a stadium, arena or ampitheater (100 to 300 feet from speaker to audience): At least 4,000 to 15,000 W

For those last 3 purposes, I'd suggest at least 8 times the power - and indeed nearly those powers on foldback....

They do go on to note:

"Although a rock concert in an arena could be powered by 15,000 watts (allowing only 6 dB of headroom for peaks,) you'll often see large touring sound companies using 80,000 to 400,000 watts total. That much power is needed to handle 20-to-24 dB peaks without any clipping, and to power extra speakers for even coverage of a large area. "

Digression warning-
gnu, if you have 'old' ears, an audiologist can give you new ones. Mine sold me on a pair- very good, except for the monstrous price she charged. I am deaf in one ear; the new aid has a transmitter one places on the deaf (or poor) ear that picks up and sends sound to the main hearing aid, thus keeping sound separated.

Which reminds me, a place in Toronto supplies hearing aids for those who are deaf (or partly so) in one ear but want to keep the defective ear free. Both channels are fed into the one good ear. Musicians are the main customers.

"I SAID, PUT YOUR HAND UP IF YOU USE A STADIUM TO LISTEN TO MUSIC?"

I will in a short while as U2 is playing not far up the street from me on July 30. Even the local newspaper has been "loud" for months.

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated.

The power requirements commonly stated as being "necessary" are sort of a fiction, since they refer to the electrical power available from the amplifier. The acoustic power actually required to "fill a room" is an entirely different matter.

Speaker efficiency is a big factor in how much electrical power is required, and "back in the day" when "hi-fi" was a technical challenge people learned that less efficient speakers allowed the amps to operate at higher power where the amplifier outputs were more linear, and hence the sound was "better."

With "efficient" speakers, something like 12 to 20 Watts (electrical) can easily fill a 16 x 20 ft room with sound that's physiologically hazardous, but as "low efficiency" speakers became the norm even room-sized systems crept up to 100 W (and more). Now some home systems talk about kilowatts.

The number that's meaningful - acoustic power - is almost never accurately measured, for the very good reason that "it ain't easy to do." And an Amp maker/seller can't tell you anything about what acoustic power you'll get without knowing all the details about the room, the speakers, the number of people and other furniture, etc. It's easier to figure out a sales pitch that works for everybody and learn it well, than to do detailed, tedious (and probably very approximate) calculations for each customer - who will probably lie about all the details before you pick up a pencil and then complain if the numbers aren't exactly right.

Once upon a time some places would let you take home a "loaner" to try it out in your own space. As long as you bought something from the lender, they'd usually let you run the test for free - but might charge a "rental fee" if you decided not to buy. If you consider the "restocking fee" as a cost of rental, you can still do sort of the same thing, but you have to play their game and call it "returned merchanise" and it's never free (at anyplace I've heard of recently).

How it sounds when you get it home is a lot more important than fancy (meaningless) numbers.

John

That web site I gave does offer a calculator

It also says. Typical loudspeaker sensitivity is 85 dB SPL/W/m for home stereos, 95 dB SPL/W/m for small PA speakers, 100-105 dB for medium PA speakers, and 110 dB for large PA speakers.

I inherited an old Panasonic ghetto blaster from one of my daughters. It has a stereo line input and a 5 band equalizer. Six inch speakers with two inch tweeters. Now this is no sophisticated set up I know but it is 1000% better than the shitty speakers that came with the computer. It is loud enough without perceptual distortion to set my wife complaining so anything above that would be useless anyhow. The low end won't set the curtains twitching but I rate too much bas as distortion anyway. Good enough for me!

gnu, if you already have good speakers in the house, why are you buying more? If you're watching these on your computer away from the rest of your sound system then pick up one of the inexpensive speakers that include a good base box (whatever the system is called that has the third box that usually sits behind the monitor.) If you want better sound, untether yourself from the computer speakers and run the signal to an HD tv with good sound or run it also into your home's stereo receiver and run it through your existing speakers. I have my Dad's old huge speakers - they weigh a ton but they still sound great. And I have the tv, dvd/bluray player and other devices all going into the receiver (that's what I need to replace - the settings are there, but it's several generations old now). Include your computer into that feed and listen on a larger scale.

My two cents worth.

SRS

"gnu's getting so old that he probably can't hear the full frequency range of a talking teddy bear"

It isn't true that age and deafness must go together. Many old people have fine hearing. Much of hearing loss has to do with noise from industry and - nowadays - amplified music.

My mother (who never drove a car and rarely worked outside the home)went for a hearing test at age 70 or 75. The audiologist said she had the best hearing he had ever tested.

We never went in for loud music, either.
