From: open mike

Yesterday I went to the E.R. for x-rays on my foot. As I suspected a bone was broken in a tumble I had the night before. This will put a serious cramp in my style the rest of the summer! Now I have crutches and a boot cast -- and will need to see the bone doc. tomorrow to see if I need a plaster or fiber glas cast or if this velcro boot is adequate to immobilize my foot til it heals. this might take 6-8 weeks. at least my hands are o.k. (althought wrists have still remaining pain since i broke my fall with my hands...and skinned both knees too...i feel my wrists as I try to walk with crutches...since the weight is transferred to hands as I walk...hey, maybe i should learn to walk on my hands!!

How about you, Maeve? Anything sprained or broken?
Stay on your feet ladies! Please!

I'm well enough...nothing as serious as Laurel's broken bone. Just sprains and contusions here. It comes of life in the country.

Heal well, laurel!

Sorry to hear of this, Laurel. You, too, Maeve. May you both heal up fast and fully!

Laurel, be sure you are using the crutches in the correct way; ask the bone doc or a PT to show you. It matters, a lot, in the long run, for your shoulders, arms, wrists and hands. Rog and I both only had to use crutches or a walker for a short time, but that's how I got severe tendinitis in my index fingers...gripping the walker. I am still going to therapy for them, but they are a lot better. My foot was in a boot for about 6-8 weeks, but no pain after about a week and doing better than most other parts. I cannot even tell it had broken bones.

Susun Weed's book, Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way says a teaspoon of horsetail (herb) in a cup of boiling water, steeped for 5 minutes, then drink, will help "spark new bone cell growth."

As an alternative, she recommends adding a tablespoon of horsetail to a quart of boiling water with an ounce of any of the following "bone-mending" herbs: nettle leaves, comfrey leaves, red clover blossoms, raspberry leaves, sage leaves, alfalfa, oatstraw with seed, or uva ursi leaves.

Of course, it all depends on what meds you may be on and all that. YMMV.

Anyway, may you both heal up!

kat

Been there, done that.
After a week I hutched my way into work and demanded a sitting-down job.
Fortunately it was a big firm and they found me one.

No computer in those days, and crap TV. Pontious was still a pilot.

Ouch! Laurel, don't try dancing the rumba just yet, and Maeve, I'm glad you are not badly hurt too.

The worst part of falling is the undignified landing, I reckon - says she who has done it a few times.

Cheers

Truelove caught me a long time ago when I fell for him, thank goodness.

Oh- you meant when I aim for the ground? ;)

Several years back I fell flat on my face on very rough pavement! People came running.

I was very lucky, all I needed was 3 band-aids - I had 3 small grazes, one on my forehead. And a serous loss of dignity. My hat saved me - it's an Australian classic felt, an Akubra, invented for hard use in the outback by farmers & the like. Also worn by the Australian army, but no longer into battle - the Diggers at Gallipoli wore them, tin hats were only issued when they went to France in 1917. Eric Bogle got it wrong.

heal well

"The worst part of falling is the undignified landing"

Not hardly! For me the worst part was that the fall smashed a pad in my knee, making it hard for me to walk, and especially to go down stairs, ever again.

Dignity, schmignity.

Open mike, I second that statement about using this time to play more music. How about a lap dulcimer?

My winter fall downs are a standing joke at the office - usually ice is involved. No broken bones.
So sorry, Laurel. That sort of injury puts a kink in all your activities.

Sins, if ice is involved, just stop putting ice in your drinks.
I hope you girls heal soon.
My granddaughter (5 years) came off her scooter twice this week, both times landing on her face. Only a fat lip and a grazed nose but there was blood around her teeth so I hope there's no lasting damage.

Ouch! Hope you heal quickly. In one of my exercise classes, we sit in a chair and roll our feet from side to side to strengthen our ankles. At New Bedford, MAs Summerfest I crossed the cobblestone streets (stupid because there are safer slabs to walk on if I'd gone out of my way) and felt my ankle start to twist but stayed on my feet. I'll never know if that was the result of the exercises, but I'm grateful because my ankles have always been weak and easily injured.

thank you for good wishes and advice...
I am taking naproxin for swelling and vicodin for pain
and also adding vitamin D with calcium
and homeopathic arnica and symphytum for healing and bone knitting
although i missed a cowboy poetry and music gig while in the E.R
I plan to get back in the saddle and play at a wild horse sanctuary
this weekend....sitting down!

you'll be sitting on the saddle when worn by a horse? or when the saddle is sitting on the ground?

enjoy your weekend

well, i will be near horses, but not planning on getting ON one so soon
I was just using the term "back in the saddle" as a figure of speech. I did used to have a stool at my desk made from a saddle where I sat while I was on the computer. (I did not surf the web, I rode the range)
