BTW, John has taken me under his wing over the years an ATTEMPTED to school me in the finer points of Geezerhood and just life in general. That is certainly worth a nomination.

Is it other unnamed idiosyncrasies, peculiarities, what not?

Correct, age is not a limit, it is based on actions and what stage of decay is secondary I think.   Like, do you always have to back your car into the parking space .. that is a geezer action .. I got a bunch of them that I do ... wake up in the morning and go "OHHHHHHH MY BACK"

Etymology: surely it is no coincidence that geezer/gazer/guzzler are so close in the language.

(I, myself, have been carefully avoiding being designated 'geezer'. Curmudgeon, 'valued senior source of knowlege'...sure... but geezer seems to denote a decline of overall competence and awareness.)

I completely agree about the backing into every dang thing. My neighbor has to back his lawn mower even into the garage ... I mean the difference is what?   someone has to explain that to me how pulling out into traffic to back into a parking spot is safer then pulling in ...

I need to point out that employees of any age of my local phone company who drive company vehicles are required to back into parking spaces. I thought that was true of members of the US military service too. At least I think I read that in some nonfiction book.

I agree. It is safer to back into a spot where there is no traffic and to then be able to drive forward into a spot where there is traffic. It's just common sense. No? Am I missin somethin here?

BTW... my old man taught me that when he was teaching me to drive when I was a teen. And he was RCAF but I don't think the RCAF thing matters. It's just common sense.

I park my truck in my driveway the wrong way but I am on a dead end street and I have a rear view camera. When I park Mum's car, I always reverse into the driveway. Don't make me a geezer, just safe.

The parking backwards thing is all about facilitating the fast get away, if ever needed. It comes from the preparedness (aka boy scout) gene. I think we are witnessing the extinction of this gene, though as fewer men appear to be backing into the drive these days.

BTW, TheSiletOne backs into parking spaces randomly. He is nearly 61. I cannot ascertain what engenders the decision on the spot to park forward or backward. It is a mystery.

I am such a poor parker of a car that I always park in by going in forwards. I think this is because by the time I get to where I want to park I am so annoyed that I don't trust myself to back in.

When I come to go out I have usually composed myself.

I used to be a really good at parking having lived and worked in Central London for three years. Nowadays I don't get to have to park that much and my mind is less able to take in all the road rage going on around me. So my free bus pass gets used more these days.

Yes I am a grumpy old git when driving !!!

1) I was foolin' around, but fire trucks and ambulances are ALWAYS backed into the hall, whether the doors are open or not.


2) I moved and am no longer doing firefighting or rescue, Bill. I sure do miss it.
