Fauja Singh (born April 1, 1911) is a Sikh marathon runner who is now over 100 year old. He is originally from India but has lived in the UK since 1992. He is a world-record holder in his age bracket in various sporting categories. He is Britain's most popular Sikh in his 100's. He has set various marathon records in the over 90's and over 100's categories. In 2004, he was featured in an advertising campaign for sportswear manufacturer Adidas.

In October 2011, Fauja Singh travelled to Canada to run in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon. As preparation for the marathon, on Thursday, October 13, 2011, he ran eight world record times for his age group in less than five hours at Scarborough's Birchmount Stadium track in Toronto (Ontario, Canada), from distances as short as 100 metres to as long as 5,000 metres.

These are the races in which he broke the world record:
100 metres - 23.40 seconds (previous 29.83)
200 metres - 52.23 seconds (previous 77.59 seconds)
400 metres - 2:13.48 (previous 3:41.00)
800 metres - 5:32.18 (no previous record)
1,500 metres - 11:27.00 (previous 16:46.00)
mile - 11:53.45 (no previous record)
3,000 metres - 24:52.47 (no previous record)
5,000 metres - 49:57.39 (no previous).

Following this record breaking day, Fauja Singh went on to secure a spot in the Guinness World Book of Records on Sunday, October 16, 2011, at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon when he achieved his dream - becoming the world record holder of the marathon aged 100 years.

The 100-year-old managed to accomplished this amazing feat, completing the gruelling 42.195 kilometre marathon and becoming the oldest person ever to complete a full-distance marathon.

I just read a book by the 89-year-old actress Betty White. She wrote, if you're not in pain and you have your faculties, why complain?

A good point of view.

Developing cataracts is not necessarily attributable to old age - at the clinic there were two patients still in their 20s - but age is the most common cause.

A few minutes earlier I had commented on the phone that the thing I have noticed most since the cataract removal last week was that my eyesight is much sharper. Then my sis in Oregon and I went on talking.

Suddenly I remembered something that I had noted the last few days and I told her that I am suddenly going gray. I wondered out loud whether the stress of going through the surgery might cause such a thing in just a few days and that at this rate I will end up white haired even though a couple of beauticians had assured me over the years that I would never have beautiful white hair, that I was starting out too late.

Then the coincidental timing hit me. Sis thought of it at just about the same time and we practically rolled on the floor laughing. I have no doubt but that upon my next visit among our friends and family my eyes and I will have become notorious.

I'm going to stop drinking Guinness in protest!

From BBC News:
Guinness World Records says it does not recognise claims that a 100-year-old Briton is the world's oldest marathon runner.

Fauja Singh, from Ilford, east London, attracted worldwide publicity after he completed the Toronto marathon last week.

Guinness World Records says it has not ratified the record as Mr Singh cannot show a birth certificate from 1911.

His trainer, Harmander Singh, says such documents were not made in India then.

Fauja Singh is said to hold a number of world records, but the BBC's 5 live Investigates programme has learned that none of these records has been ratified by Guinness World Records.

His British passport, showing his date of birth as being 1 April 1911, as well as a letter from the Queen congratulating Mr Singh on his 100th birthday, have been shown to the organisation. But it says these are not considered sufficient proof of age.

'No evidence'

A letter from Indian government officials stating that no birth records were kept in 1911, and a statement from a former neighbour in India, have also been passed to Guinness World Records, but the organisation says these too are not evidence enough.

Fauja Singh recently completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in eight hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds, finishing in 3,850th place, ahead of five other competitors.

He received worldwide publicity celebrating his position as the oldest man to complete a marathon - numerous media organisations, including the BBC, announced he had made it into Guinness World Records.

It has also been widely reported that Mr Singh already had a place in Guinness World Records for the over-90 marathon category after running the 2003 Toronto marathon in five hours and 40 minutes.

But Guinness World Records has in fact not ratified this record, although Mr Singh is listed as a record holder for this performance on the World Masters Athletics website - an organisation which accepts a passport as a proof-of-age document.
"It's important to everybody who's over a certain age, because it inspires them"
Harminder Singh
Fauja Singh's trainer

Speaking to the BBC, the editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records, Craig Glenday, said: "We would love to give him the record. We'd love to say this is a true Guinness World Record, but the problem is there is just no evidence.

"We can only accept official birth documents created in the year of the birth. Anything else is really not very useful to us."

It is also claimed that Mr Singh holds UK records for the 200m, 400m, 800m, mile and 3,000m for his age group, but British Masters Athletics (BMA) says these records were not official as the event where Mr Singh performed was not attended by official timekeepers, as well as the fact no proof of Mr Singh's age was provided.

His name does not appear on the BMA website's list of record holders.

However, Fauja Singh recently claimed another eight records for 100-year-old men by completing eight distances ranging from 100m to 5,000m and it looks like those performances will be recognised by the British and World Masters Athletics. The Canadian official who oversaw his performance says Mr Singh's British passport was shown and is considered valid proof of age.

Mr Singh, who does not speak English, worked as a farmer in the Punjab before moving to Britain in 1992.

Inspirational

In the past, he has appeared in advertisements for sportswear firm Adidas, for its "Nothing is Impossible" campaign.

Mr Singh's trainer, Harmandar Singh, says he thinks recognition by Guinness World Records is important.

He said: "I think it's important to everybody who's over a certain age, because it inspires them and allows them to think 'yes, it is possible'.

"However, the fact remains that the Guinness Book of Records has its rules, and I think they are quite right to have them.

"However, in the developing countries, their standards simply aren't up to western standards."

Eddie

Many folk in the developing world have no documents at all regarding the date of their birth. My husband's parents were listed as being both born on 1st January, which I thought a wonderful coincidence, but apparently everyone is given that date! As to the year, an approximation is made, but it could be way out. As the Guinness Book of Records is based on dates, times and factual corroboration, I agree with them, documentation is needed.

Put this on a birthday thread but I guess it should be here....or not.

Have you noticed that as you age your defecation times can sometimes also be a part of your sleep cycle? If this is happening to you, I would suggest the latest Senior Citizen aid right along with those weird ass bath tubs with doors. The OSHA approved and AARP recommended "LCR" (Lap Crap Restraint), often called the Lapper Crapper, can prevent a rude awakening on the bathroom floor. Get the model with the optional shoulder restraint.

Cletus' company, Crappers on Casters, has installed them in all of their portapotties with excellent results. They often have to set up there units on very unlevel ground and the belts have served them well. No more complaints from people being thrown out the door during a good healthy shit simply because they released their grip on the wall bar. One particularly rotund lady with a large firebox actually did a complete somersault as she crashed through the door and then slid down the hill face first with her ass bouncing high in the air. Quite a sight...........scared the hell out of two kids playing hopscotch on the shuffleboard court at the foot of the hill.

This device is available from Fly-By-Night Industries, one of America's Foremost Manufacturers. We have been making Foremost for years and now also have the new and larger Fivemost available. All of our products come with a money back guarantee. Simply return the unused portion of the product and we will return the unused portion of your money.
