'Woolly mammoth' caught on video in Siberia

An astonishing video shot by a Russian engineer appears to show a hairy elephant-sized animal wading through a river in the wilds of Siberia.

Just like the ice-age creature, the beast in the images has a red hairy coat and clearly-visible giant tusks.
With its trunk swinging from side to side, the creature's coat would match samples of preserved mammoth hair dug up from permafrost in frozen Russia.

The incredible footage was filmed by a government-employed engineer last summer in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug region of Siberia. He was in the area to survey for a planned road.

Releasing the footage anonymously for the first time, the Russian national said he wanted to draw attention to the fact that woolly mammoths still exist in the vast unexplored wastes of Siberia.
Woolly mammoths roamed the Earth 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age, although scientists believe the last of the animals died out 3,500 years ago.

It's definitely elephant-shaped, but too far away to be able to say it's a mammoth. It could even be a spoof! (Two men in a plastic inflatable elephant, like some of the Loch Ness monster pictures)

I can see why someone thought it was a mammoth - but there should be a herd of them. And tusks.

I go along with the bear interpretation - in the middle of the film that becomes quite obvious.

But, as someone else posted, if it were a mammoth someone would have shot it then and there.

It's a bear wit yer salmon. The "snout" wouldn't be that colour if it was a wooly snout. Unless that there is the extremely rare siver snout wooly which was thought to be extinct... until now. I say they should have shot it to confirm it was almost extinct.

If you examine closely, you might note that the "bow wave" where the water meets the "animal's" legs translates without change as the animal "walks" across the stream. Some attempt may have been made to simulate a ripple, but it's poorly executed.

There are other clues easily spotted by experienced photoshoppers, one prominent one of which is the nearly uniform "blur" throughout the entire field of view (frequently used to obscure touchup artifacts). Nearly all video cameras approximating the apparent quality of the one we're supposed to believe do have some "autofocus" capability, and it's good enough in even the most primitive of cameras that there should have been some part of the images in focus, or very nearly so, even if other parts were "out of the depth" of the lens. Even if "locked" to a fixed focus (which can be done only with cameras that should still have taken better images), there should have been some variation in how far out of focus the parts of the image are, since the relative distances to features in the picture span a very long range.

One reporter identified the most amazing thing about the film as where on earth did he get a camera that bad?, which is a valid question, but only if you assume it's not a total hoax.

The person reported to be the one posting the video is well known for previous hoaxes, as well.

John

The video bears the words "Siberian Mammoth Copyright Michael Cohen, Barcroft Media"

I googled "Michael Cohen Barcroft Media" (without quotes) and I found this at http://ufoupdateslist.com/2011/oct/m22-003.shtml:

"...Michael Cohen and his website allnewsweb.com have for several years now passed off lame, hoaxed videos and related reports and pictures on his site regarding UFOs and "aliens" with nary a critical or objective evaluation...."

With reference to a different video of an alleged "alien," the writer questions Cohen's right to put a copyright notice on the video, when Cohen claims that he didn't create the video himself but that someone "leaked" it to him.

The writer also says that Cohen "brings disrepute to legitimate ufology."

'Nuff said?

How many photos have you seen of Noah's ark where it's still embedded in the ice on Ararat? The first one I saw could have been a grease smudge on almost any surface, or a shapeless shadow on a wall, badly out of focus; it made this mammoth picture look like proof positive.

Well, it looks like a fish to me, Pete.

Eliza, what I am thinkin' is that the video was taken last summertime, and got released to public scrutiny later. It's definitely Micca. My guess is, he stole a big fish from the local fresh seafood store and then he made his stealthy escape by wadin' across a real narrow part of the estuary. He probably figgered that people would take him for some kind of wild animal and he'd get away with it.

And you see? They did! His nefarious plan worked like a charm.

The fish has no doubt been et by now, so I figger it's all water under the bridge, and can't nothin' be done about it.

Does anyone remember that story about some prisoners in one of Stalin's siberian gulags, who cam across the the body of a mammoth preserved perfectly for million years until the movement of a glacier uncovered it? The poor prisoners were so hungry that they ate the frozen meat.

Might have been in Solzhenitsyn. can't remember.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were still mammoths?
