Two weeks ago my mom went in the hospital with stomach cramps and bleeding. The docs in the local Pennsylvania hospital did a poor job of testing. I was pretty upset when the just cut her lose after an IV. I kept saying you need to scope her to find out what is going on.. no what could I know. I have only had chrons disease since I was 18. Today her Colon ruptured, she is in critical condition. I am not sure how it is going to play out, she is quite elderly and it is not looking good...

Dan, I'm sorry to read this. I hope she is able to pull through, but regardless of the outcome, they need to keep her comfortable and pain free. You are her advocate, speak up for her when you need to. You might even ask the medical team what their plan is and work from there.

Well she survived the surgery, she is in ICU in a medical induced coma. Right now they still have her opened up to try and get rid of all the poison in her system. Her colon was shreded. They found a large tumor but it was self contained so the doc wasn't as concerned with the cancer as the infection. Wednesday they will operate again and try to put her back together. She will lose the colon .. spleen is now gone also ... very touch and go right now.

I am ok, My mom is a woman of great faith, either way the wind blows I will be ok and so will mom ...

very hard to watch this however

Thank you my friends, she is sick sick but her vitals looked decent last night. Now if she makes it through tomorrow's last surgery then I think maybe we can turn this. Doc gave pretty small odds that she would make it through the first one but if they didn't try it was all over. Well she did and I think she will tomorrow also. She is a tough old bird. Late 80's and acts like she is turning 60. She is non stop motion and it is terrible to see her so helpless.

Wish you could have all met my mom. She has the greatest energy and the best sense of humor anyone could have. She makes you laugh ... Looks like she is in her 60's. When my dad was killed, I was 14.. all the single guys kept asking her out because she was drop dead beautiful. Nope ... I asked her once to go out and she said, "I fell in love with your dad the day I met him, nothing has changed for me nor will until they lay me by his side"

That's my mom, never weighed more that 110 lbs her whole life, just a tiny little firecracker of a woman ... Her faith is so deep and strong. Hard to see her so sick

over 4 hours of surgery to put her back together, doc came out and said I never seen someone that sick and that elderly turn around so quick. They got the infection under control, the vials are now all stable. He said she is very sick but there is now no reason to think she won't make a full recovery ... he was amazed. He said he would have taken odd that she would not have made it to the first of the operations ... tough old girl for sure

I never doubt the power of prayer, I don't ... Here is a true story of recent. My close friend in Wisconsin is 69. He has a kidney from his brother as he had total kidney failure. His wife Carol last fall saw he was acting wierd. They ran some tests, He had the kidney failing and beyond that he had a massive inoperable tumor on the brain. After a lot of docs they said he will not make it to Thanksgiving. The frontal lobe of the brain is gone and the kidney is barely working. No chemo, no treatment even from the Mayo Clinic. We prayed no matter what happened we prayed for what will be will be. February of this year, in bed dying, no longer able to speak, he woke up, walked into his wife and asked "what is this all about" feeding tube , diapers. She freaked, back to the Mayo Clinic, docs were speechless, test after test, no tumor, brain healed, terminal cancer none, kidney function, perfect. The doc told his wife Carol, this is medically impossible, we ran every test in the book, the brain tissue once destroyed as he had is terminal and can't be reversed but there is no sign of anything, nothing wrong. I talked to him this weekend, he was back at the firehouse (volunteer fireman) having fun with the guys and mowing the grass. prayer, miracles, they do happen .. I swear to God this is an absolutely true story ... you can talk to him if you don't believe me. sometimes God says no, sometimes as with Lazerus he says yes. Jerry is a man like my mom of great faith. I said goodbye to him last fall, now I talk to him like I talk to you ... He is amazing .. like my mom

Dan,

Hardi's mom had a massive intestinal spill a few years ago when her appendix ruptured.... it got messy there... It was touch and go. Till I got on thyroid meds, tho, she was still tougher and had more stamina than I did, and is still going strong now several years later.

Healing may take a little longer than she will like, and it may be awhile before she has full strength, but at that age they are so powerful anyway that they usually take MY breath away.

TBTG you still have her, and just love the heck out of her every, every day that you can.

For sure Susan, I am so thankful that she had such a good doc also .. boy she is sick, it will take awhile for sure. Then again knowing my mom she may walk out next week. one time she was in her late 60's fell and broke two ribs. I took her to the er room ... yup broken ribs. Next day I caught her up a ladder cleaning windows ... the woman is no stop motion. Walks to the store to get her groceries. Loves to walk ... she is a tough old bird for sure ...

When I tell someone, that is just the way my mom made it , it ain't a compliment. Cooking wasn't one of her great skills

I know what you mean about "Mom's cooking". My mother overcooked just about everything. Cauliflower, at her hands, became a bumpy paste, calves liver a one-toned leather, garden peas a mess of burst globules...

It was not really her fault. I found a 1924 cook book that said how long to cook things. Garden peas, for instance, it said to boil for 20 minutes!

I will do Mary LOL ... so my sister calls yesterday, Mom is turning bad again .. I fly down 40+ miles. The old lady is watching her soap opera's on TV, they took her off the breathing machine. She says boy I am beginning to hate Jello like you ... They moved her to another room in ICU because it had a nice view of the lake and harbor and she was doing so well.   They told my sister that they changed the antibiotic because they saw some MRSA and wanted to nail it before it was a problem. She went from deaths door to soap operas. My sister hears MRSA and wigs .. gonna kick her arse. Mom wants her great great grand baby and her cat .. LOL   broke the mold with that old woman. Not a single complaint, nothing, just can't wait to go home. I said you are still in ICU, can ya give it a bit

My thoughts are with you and your family, dude. A tip from an old surgical nurse: when she decides it's time to get up, don't argue with her (though it may take arguing with the nurses and docs). Sitting up and walking are the best things she can do to get better. It doesn't take licensed personnel to help her, either. Family can walk with her (with a wheelchair and driver behind if you're afraid) several times a day, while the nurses will only be able to manage once or twice.

Pain can have a different quality after abdominal surgery. Tell her that severe itching/burning is the same thing as pain - if it's too much, ask for pain medicine. It's just not the same as stomach cramps or a bashed finger. If she thinks she's ok without medicine, believe her, especially if she's able to get up. She's lived a long life and learned to deal with pain. Let her be in control and less medicated, and she's less likely to get confused/combative.

And take care of yourself. I worry about your flying down the highway in a state of panic.

Her favorite movie is "The quiet man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara . Well of course she had to see the quiet man bridge in the Connemara ... I turn around and she is knocking on people's doors wanting to know if John Wayne or Maureen O'Hara slept there. So a year later I went on vacation with my doc buddie and our families to the British Virgin Islands. He owns a house there, he goes wow Maureen O'Hara is home. I go What !!! yes she is a good friend lives next door. So we go over, I ask her for an autograph for my mom and the lovely lady signs a great photo for her.

When I return I gave it to my mom, she was speechless then said, I have just the frame, it will fit in this one. I said MOM!!!That is my high school senior picture. She says, yes but it is Maureen O'Hara we are talking about ...

Outside my first apartment in my home town there was a 4 way stop where the roads came together. Well one night I hear this bam bam .. hiss and hubcap rolling .. I look out and hear this familiar voice yelling at this young guy "hush up young man, us older folks have great insurance. I go to the door and my mom walks up holding this guys hub cap and says very calmly "Dan, I believe I may have failed to come to a complete stop at the sign" Can you give the young man my insurance card ... true absolutely true stories.

One thing you don't do around mom is swear, even if you are not Catholic you will end up doing the rosary. I learned my extensive swear vocabulary from my dad who was always working on some car in the yard. You would never see dad's face just his feet sticking out of a car and would hear "Come out of there you dirty bastard" as he was trying to get a broken something out of the car to replace it.

I remember asking mom "what part is a dirty bastard, dad has so much trouble with that one"   Yup he and I both ... rosary

Took her to Rome once, ever single church we had to say the rosary. Now do you know how many churches there are in Rome ... A bunch I am here to tell ya.

I said Mom there is lots to see in Rome, not just the churches. "Why would someone go to Rome to see anything else" was her reply

Forgot to tell you, last night I visited with my uncle Rocky .. yup I got an uncle Rocky .. anyway we go in the room, they moved her out of ICU and she goes hush .. quiet Lisa is sleeping. Rock and I are who is Lisa , well it is her nurse. Asleep in the chair. She wakes up and apologies .. I said no apology needed, I do that a lot when I talk to mom.   She scurries out of the room. I said "Mom you didn't make her say the rosary 10 times did you" I get no .. this is not a Catholic hospital. The poor girl has a baby and was up all night .. I decided to just let her rest. She came in to do the blood pressure and I said just sit down and nap. I got ya covered ..

I used to work housekeeping in a hospital. She doesn't have to clean the room, that's what the paid us to do. Trust me, she's paying for it and they won't give her a discount if she helps.

(For one thing, you've got to use special cleaners because of the possibility of Staph A -- cleaning surgery and labor & delivery involved wearing damned near a "clean suit" and this was back in the early '60s).

Tell mom that when my grand mother was 93 she had a sprained knee and was put into "long term care"... She was out in a month, back in her own apartment where she lived independently for several more years...

Our band founder Ed would give her a run for her money, and then recruit her to lead the activities for the less-zippy inmates. Just let her know it is another area she can take over and organize-- not her room, but the staff. :~) We're off shortly to go work with our SECOND band, and entertain at a place like your mom is headed for.

A friend of mine has a photo album she calls, "Mom conquers the world." Dan, it sounds like all you need to do is add pix and you have a whole BOOK in you about this lady!

Probably one of the first things that will happen at the rehab hosp is an evaluation of where she is now and a prediction of how long it should take until she can go home. Whatever they predict, I suspect she will beat that!

In Ireland she got tired one day and just wanted to stay at the B&B. I really think she just wanted to do some knitting with the nice elderly lady that ran the place. My mom is very hard of hearing ... so was the elderly lady ... you could hear the both of them sitting on the back porch there going "say again" ... "What" .. "huh" with big smiles on their faces .. She had a grand time and the two are still friends .. none of that email stuff, too impersonal .. the old letter exchange ... At least they now can understand each other

Then I give her the shaw that Jacqui made for her .. silk threaded .. OMG beautiful .. She was blown away .. Thank you Jacqui, she looks and looks and says, The young girl is a master .. I could not do this quality of work even when I was younger ... YOU really made her day

Of course! The shawl - we should have expected this, but it is a nice surprise, isn't it! And Jacqui does such nice work! (Note to Jacqui - my friend came home from ~ four months of hospital and rehab early this month - is away now at daughter's since can't live alone yet - we'll get a photo of her in the shawl and post it where folks can see it on facebook. She loves it!)

Dan - I am so glad your Mom got the shawl. We were heading for the UK and I didn't get a chance to mail it myself - Kendall's granddaughter did that for me. There is always a little bit of anxiety about whether the shawls have reached their destinaTION. This one was very important.

So in 1998 a drunk and high truck driver drove an 18 wheeler right through her house. My Mom and My aunt (who since has passed) were upstairs of the old house. The truck collapsed and the house started on fire. All rooms collapsed except for the part of the floor with the two old ladies. The firemen got them both out without injury but the house was a loss. Well the truck was carrying oranges. The insurance company put my mom and my aunt up in an apartment until they settled the house loss. I went over to visit them and my mom goes look. She opens up the fridge, every inch packed with oranges. Mom says, "Your aunt and I figured they owed us that much"

So I didn't want her to keep driving the nurses crazy because she won't put in her hearing aid .. by the way, the nurses said she has been entertaining the whole staff. One said she should have been a stand up comic .. I said yes but she is not making it up.. Anyway, the nurses get what, come again ... so I called in a favor, I got this military sniper hearing headphone set like the special forces use. I mean you can hear the flies getting it on a mile away .. so I go in and she has the headset on and the TV is low low low, she says can't you turn the TV volume down it is really loud... LOL ... one extreme to another

The truck driver was a young man, Mom wrote a 5 page letter to him in jail about how bad drugs are and he would do better to try the rosary .. and that she was glad he wasn't hurt

One of the great lessons she taught me was through her losing her house. All the big gun lawyers wanted her to file a big lawsuit. She said NO ! The young man made a mistake, I pray that he learns and gets better.

Insurance on her home took care of her for another house but she and us lost everything we had as a kid

I told this story before but not my mom's reaction. A train jumped the track behind my house. The RR used carbide lights to work through the night to put it back on the rails. Well they left a huge can of carbide that my cousin and I found. Now being 11 years old we didn't know what it was so my cousin said, lets see if it burns. He stole some matches from his house and we tried to light it up ... BOOOM
it blew out all the windows by his dad's garage. The explosion sent me flying, shredded my cloths and burned off my hair ... other than that my cousin and I were toasty but unharmed. I went home crying .. After mom figured out that only my pride was hurt she goes

"That's what you and your cousin gets for playing with dynamite"

Not good, she was home, fine, now they rushed her back ... total kidney failure this time. I guess the surgeries were too much for her... at 88 it is probably time now ... I don't think they can fix that at her age ... pretty sick again ...

Doing better, so far the docs are pounding her with meds and fluids. She is awake and smiling again. Tonight she ate pretty good. The kidneys are a real problem at the moment but they are addressing it with IV stuff and fluids trying to get them to produce again ... Hopefully she can avoid long term dialysis.

I took her home yesterday, today she is not feeling all that well but it is to be expected, long trip.   I guess the cancer is worse than I thought.. I suspect they won't do anything because she is weak ... however she is smiling and has her great great grand baby there (my sisters, grandchild, little boy)   that makes her very happy.

she is doing really good, the docs are not sure yet what they want to do about the cancer thing but she has been up and walking around and acting like normal again. Her blood pressure keeps going up and down a lot but so far great.

so I drive down and visit mom in the nursing home. They will spring her in a week or so as she is feeling much better. I go in and this little old man with a walker say's oh your son is here, I will talk to you later. He hobbles out with his walker. Mom goes, he is a very nice man but a lousy bingo player ... I don't think he is Catholic. I said well that explains why he ain't much of a bingo player.

Then she says, we are friends, but it is good to know that at 89, I still got it

on the way down through the mountains I picked up this old hippie hitchin in the rain (do not do that ok, it is fine for me but not anyone else ok) he was a really nice man hitchin in the middle of nowhere. Had a real blast from the past talking about the old songs and concerts.

Lost his license from a DWI. He said at my age ya think I would have learned .. but I was wrong and now I walk or hitch.   He said the only people who ever give me a ride is old hippies like myself cause we are all brothers

We should have a thread about Moms. Dan, Terry and many others have had words about their moms that endear, entertain, enlighten us all.

Why, I would bet that everyone here has/d a Mom. Anyone care to start a thread? Maybe start it with reference to this thread? If that's cool with Dan, of course.
