Hillary Clinton Turned Down Opportunity To Replace Biden

CNBC

"Up until just a couple of weeks ago the White House was putting out feelers to see if Hillary would accept the vice-presidential nod and replace Joe Biden. Bill Clinton was, I’m told, urging his wife to accept the number two slot. He saw this as a great launching pad for her for running in 2016," author Ed Klein told Larry Kudlow on CNBC.

"She felt that if she were on the ticket with Obama and he lost, she would be tarred as a loser when she tried to run in 2016. On the other hand, if she was on the ticket and he won, and he continued his far left-wing socialistic policies, she’d have to defend those policies when she ran in 2016," Klein later explained.

Throw you in the cage with them boys, Krinkz, and wouldn't change a thing... You'd just take the #4 ass whup...

If she were my VP, I'd send her over to Russia to have a "little talk" with Putin-head...

Ed Klein has a history of being less than 100% accurate where Hillary Clinton is concerned. His 2005 biography of her was criticized by Politico for "serious factual errors, truncated and distorted quotes and overall themes (that) don't gibe with any other serious accounts of Clinton's life."

While I don't doubt that the possibility of Mrs. Clinton taking the VP job may have been discussed, Mr' Klein has no way of knowing if a serious offer was made. Furthermore, his assertions about her reasons for rejecting such an offer (if it was ever actually made) are pure speculation. It's just as likely that the idea was abandoned because of fears that "changing horses in midstream" would appear to be a desperate measure on Obama's part.

Exactly the thought that immediately came to me, McGrath. ;-) Only (some) Americans....those on the conservative side...could possibly imagine even for a second that Obama is "far left-wing socialistic" in his policies! What a hilarious notion!!!

Henry, the entire world outside the borders of the USA knows darned well that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are in any way left-wing or socialist. What you have in those 2 parties is 2 gigantic cronies of corporatism and the military-industrial complex and the banking sector. Instead of establishing, for instance, a public and equal form of universal socialized health insurance, such as exists in most of the rest of the modern developed world today, Obama did a giant giveaway to the privately-owned corporate health insurance industry by forcing people to buy their overpriced insurance! That's not socialism, no matter how much the Republicans scream that it is....it's corporatism...or fascism (the two being fairly much the same thing).

The Republicans call Obama "socialist" not because he is...but because they know their support base is so ignorant about the real nature of socialism that they wouldn't know it if they fell over it. It's propaganda to sway the utterly ignorant.

Obama is considerably to the right of center in his policies. He is no socialist. He also pursues a right wing military and foreign policy agenda, one that the Republicans are basically in approval of.

There IS no political Left in the USA at the upper levels of the Democratic and Republican parties. They are both right wing corporatist parties.

One more example: Instead of nationalising criminally irresponsible banks and lending institutions after 2008, which is what a socialist would have done, Obama gave them a huge bailout, rewarding the very crooks who created the financial meltdown. To call Obama a "socialist" is so ridiculous that it could provoke only laughter or unbelieving astonishment outside the borders of the USA.

Klein either has no idea what socialism is...or more likely, he's just saying what he knows will scare a lot of Americans and make them oppose Obama.

(keep in mind that I'm not supporting Obama. I'm just telling you...he ain't no socialist!)

Hillary is a phenomenally ambitious, determined, and ruthless woman as far as I'm concerned...another corporatist...and yeah, she probably thinks it would be better for her chances in 2016 if she did not run for VP this time. She wants to be #1, not #2 standing behind Barack Obama.

Good post Little Hawk. One of the saddest thing about those who believe in small government and 'libertarian' ideals in the US. is that they, the little people - the 99 % - are fighting FOR those who have all the money - the 1% - to oppress and control them. "Liberty" in the US is apparently conflated in the minds of the many, with the extremely rich, being "liberated" from the hideous crushing burden of paying taxes.

"Hillary is a phenomenally ambitious, determined, and ruthless woman as far as I'm concerned."

"as far as **I'M** concerned"

well, gee... I suppose we should just nod in agreement because you say this?

Why does competent and successful have to be seen in such terms? Yes, she's 'determined', and yes, she ran for president...but she has been an amazing team player in Obama's administration, and has made NO overt move (despite Sawsaw's link) to seek either the VP slot OR to suggest another presidental bid.

I am so weary of these sweeping generalizations (as you may have noticed) about the administration. The situation of money & corporations having too much power & influence does NOT show that Obama is in league with them...it merely shows that no matter WHO is president, any change is slow and must be done within the system... by degrees.
Can you really imagine...or do you comprehend... what might have happened if Obama had tried to 'nationalize the banks'? He is not trying to house-train a puppy... he is facing barely controlled lions & tigers, with only a whip and cap pistol! Now.... IF he had a 60+ majority in the Senate and maybe 275 seats in the House, you might see some significant regulation of Wall Street, various corporate dealings and environmental issues...etc.
Obama is president, not king, and he had 2 years of a Congress that was mostly with him, while dealing with wars we shouldn't have been in and a financial crisis verging on a depression. It is easy to 2nd guess 'what he should have done'..................and boy do I see a lot of it going on!

Where is there any contradiction between "ambitious, determined, and ruthless" and "competent and successful", Bill? I take it you wouldn't object to "ambitious and determined", so presumably it would be "ruthless" you object to.

It's hard to think of many (if any) successful politicians who don't have a ruthless streak.

And for the hundredth time, LH... You are parroting Republican propaganda... They have painstakenly planted the both-sides, twiddle-dee-twiddle-dum mantra to give them cover for their bullying behavior...

"2nd amendment remedies"....

((((((spit))))))

"Hell no, we won't!"....

(((((spit))))))

Guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns, guns and more guns...

This ain't both sides, LH...

You need to read "It's Even Worse Than It Looks, How the American Constitutional System Collidedf With the New Politics of Extremism", a collaboration between Norman J. Ornstein of the right leaning American Enterprise Institute and Thomas E. Mann of the left leaning Brookings Institute... Or...

...read their summary in their article printed in the "Washington Post" on April 27 of this year entitled "Let's just say it: The Republicans are the problem"...

Maybe if you would do that you would see the damage you inflict on discussions with your parroting of well-crafted and slick Republican propaganda...

I don't see a contradiction, other than I would point out that LH qualified that by *phenomenally* ambitious. What gets up my nose is the evident distinction made between a powerful woman and a powerful man. I think that *competent and successful* is far more often used to describe a man than a woman(while *ruthless* is more frequently used to describe despots, dictators and tyrants, and I object to that usage in this context).

To my mind, as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has been loyal, focused and effective.

A few random thoughts on the subject:

If Obama really wanted Hillary as his VP, she would have been given the opportunity to be on the ticket in 2008.

Hillary exercises more genuine political power as Secretary of State than she ever would in the largely ceremonial job of VP.

Assuming Obama wins a second term and that H. is retained as Secretary of State, she will be able to resign her post in, say, 2014, and devote 100% of her time to seeking the presidency, unenumbered by any official duties. As VP, she'd still have official duties to work around.

Hillary's already been Bill's de facto co-president. She doesn't need the vice-presidency as "training wheels" for the top job. She already knows how to ride that bicycle.

McGrath... "ambitious" in Little Hawk's post, seems to me to be clearly meant as a criticism that suggests that it is her personal status that she is pursuing, rather than a basic goal of progress toward an ideal.

I do not reject 'ambition' generically, but I saw it in the context of overall criticism.

I think, like Plato, that those who want to be politicians, are generally unsuited to the job.
I think, generally speaking, that anyone who has profound desire to tell others what to do, probably aught not to be allowed to do so.
I think also, that you have to be a ruthless SOB to become a powerful politician, man or woman; though considering the social obstacles in the way of a woman - and considering Maggie -then probably doubly so.

My criticism of Hillary Clinton, ladies, is pretty much the same as my criticism of most successful male politicians. It's not the fact that she's a woman that I'm focusing on at all (you're doing that in your misplaced defensive reaction TO what I said), it's the fact that she's a corporatist politician that I'm focusing on. In other words, don't be so foolish as to play the spurious "gender card" on me. I'd frankly much rather see women running the world if I had to make a choice between the 2 genders. I think they'd do a far better job of it than the men do. And I've always felt that way about it.

I consider women to be the more sensible, practical, and idealistic half of the human race, and I'm generally delighted to see them taking positions of leadership.

The nature of the present corporate system, however, brutalizes the people who ascend in its ranks. That tends to affect the women too, I'm sorry to say, and we end up with monsters like Margaret Thatcher now and then.

BillD - You object to me simply stating that something is my own opinion? (grin) Wow! I am feeling sooooo guilty for having stated an opinion YOU don't agree with! Ouch! I have trodden upon sacred ground. Punish me, Bill, beat me, put me in chains!

Little Hawk... I object to stating an opinion in terms that suggest you view it as **fact**...as in "...it's the [fact] that she's a corporatist politician..." I don't need agreement.. just clarity.

How about I find you a good manual on debate format instead of chains?

Hillary is one of the most kind person I know. She is scary smart, awesome sense of humor. I love Hillary one of my favorite people in the world and good friend. One other thing, she could care less what others call her.

Now as for fishing .. fly only .. that is the most fun. The guys here all go out with their down riggers, fish finders, high tech poles .. crap .. may as well use a net. Catch a big ass salmon on a fly, then you did something fun

Best fishing for them in the dead of winter at night. With a boat.

I think a hook might damage them less than a boat. It'd be hard to clean a squished fish, too. If you really want to beat them up before you eat them, you could maybe get a little hammer, and when you catch one, hit it on the head just hard enough to knock it out. I think it's bad for your karma to hit fish though, and might just damage your karma so you'll come back in your next life as a minnow, or even a bug.

"The first recording made with the Skillet Lickers was 'Hand Me Down My Walking Cane', recorded in Atlanta on April 17, 1926. It was released by Columbia on a 78rpm disc backed with 'Watermelon On the Vine'. The group would eventually record more than 100 songs for Columbia before splitting up in 1931. Three years later, Tanner and Puckett reformed the Skillet Lickers and had several releases on Bluebird Records. Tanner stopped making records in 1934, but continued performing into his seventies."

That three year hiatus seems to disqualify the Skillet Lickers from "the longest continually performing musical group" in America, a title which belongs to the Sons of the Pioneers (1933-date).

Hank... "Fly fishing? Save it for a windy day."

Real men know how to fly fish on a windy day. I learned from Ted Williams. Great story... IMO, of course. Reader's Digested... after ya wrap yer line around yer head, pull yer hat down and keep yer head down so nobody knows who ya are.

Seriously tho... real men can and do fly fish on windy days.

Salt water fishin is different. Never been on a big boat and dunno if I would care to go. Caught shark, smelt, mackerel, Arctic char... jigged cod. Fishin jack smelt and mackerel from shore in Aug & Sep on a full moon near dark is deeeeelicious. Gather various clams, crabs, mussels, periwinkles and a shitload of others and ya got a helluva BBQ on the beach. No fly fishin tho.

"...a criticism that suggests that it is her personal status that she is pursuing, rather than a basic goal of progress toward an ideal.

I suppose it is not inconceivable that there are successful politicians who are not personally ambitious. Pretty hard to think of any. I rather doubt if Hilary Clinton would be one.

"a basic goal of progress toward an ideal" is also of course pretty useful, and I imagine Hilary Clinton likely has her share of that. But it's more of a bomus than an essential. I can think of a few politicians who seem to have been pretty "successful" without too much of that. The last Clinton, Blair, just for starters...

Hmmm.. I personally have met several. At least, their public behavior seemed to show that. You can 'suppose' they were just hiding their real motives...but *shrug*

Want some names? (They are US...but..)

Try former Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon.. or former Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin who, "In his last two Senate campaigns of 1976 and 1982, Proxmire refused to take any campaign contributions, and on each spent less than $200 out of his own pocket"

Also look at retiring congressman Barney Frank of Fourth Congressional District of Massachusetts....and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who does an excellent job of seeming to be about the country rather than self...(whatever you may think of his slightly Socialist leanings)

I personally knew Representative Dan Glickman of Kansas who did a pretty good job of sounding like his major focus was on policy rather than personal gain, and ended up being well respected by BOTH parties.

I even include Al Gore, who wrote books on environmental issues before he was VP. HE wrote them...and recorded them for books-on-tape. His current focus in on global warming.
I suppose that any successful politician can profit FROM his efforts, but in this world, you need a bit of financial independence to even TRY to be influential in good causes.

So... in a couple hours, I could remember & find more, but they DO exist. I have seen several interviewed in recent months who at least sounded honest and dedicated....but names not on top of my head right now.

Bill, I would nominate Jim McDermott, congressional representative from Washington State's 7 th District (which includes Seattle) as a politician with genuine honesty and integrity—along with a willingness to stick his neck out for his constituents and for the American people in general.

He was given a tape by two people in Florida who had accidentally intercepted a telephone conversation between Newt Gingrich and John Boehner. They recognized that what the two were cooking up was both illegal and unethical. They taped the conversation, and because McDermott was on the Congressional Ethics Committee at the time, they gave it to him. McDermott presented it to the committee—but Republican Ethics Committee chairperson Nancy L. Johnson refused to act on it, and refused to allow the tape to be entered into the Ethics Committees records!

So McDermott, feeling that American citizens should be aware of what their elected representatives were up to, gave the tape to the press.

Boehner and Gingrich, boldly unrepentant for getting caught with their pants down and their hands in the cookie jar, sued McDermott! McDermott lost the law suit, and the appeals, on the basis that McDermott's act in giving the tape to the press was not "consistent with the spirit of the Ethics Committee (!!).

Jim McDermott is the kind of person who is willing to put it on the line for the American people, even when he knows that he'll probably get into deep do-do with some people for doing so!

In my book, he's one of the Good Guys!!

Don Firth
