Does an "unavoidable" Global bacon shortage concern you. Outside of hoarding, what do you plan in reaction? Does thinking of it make you agressive?


This situation is likely something we can't blame in Israel, though some may try a shot at it:)

Since the price increases predicted will affect all pork products they will put a crimp in our budget, although we don't expect that there won't be adequate supplies in our area - for those who can still afford it(?).

In most recent times pork in general has been about half the price of beef here - per pound, and while it's difficult to cook cheap beef so that it's tender enough to be enjoyed by those of us with no teeth at all, any idiot can cook most pork without turning it into something indestructible.

But there's always chicken for a backup.

Bacon (the US kind) is sort of a special case since it's quick and easy (until the smoke breaks out 'cause you didn't pay attention) when you just need a snack.

At present, there's probably actually a glut of pork on hand at the processors, since lots of farmers have been selling them off prematurely due to the high cost (and unavailability) of feed. It doesn't seem to be reflected in current prices though, so the processors must be saving it all for later.

I dunno about where youse are but I have seen bacon on sale here where the sign says the regular price is about a million dollars a pound over what I would pay for salted pork fat... a lot of it is just that. It's ludicrous. Yet, I see people buying it. It's unreal to me.

The big groceries buy the meat processing plants here and shut them down?... our chickens are now trucked a thousand miles, processed and trucked a thousand miles back to us and the price is double? WTF is that? But, again, I see people buying the stuff at the big grocery store. Newfoundland supplies New Brunswick with chicken at a decent price? Fuck Quebec and Ontario and their big money... bastards! But, the real tragedy is that they are slowly squeezing the local Coops out so that soon, they can triple their prices. Triple is better than double, eh?

I buy my pork from local farmers who don't feed their pigs corn. I don't think I'll have any problems, especially since I've already got a quarter of a pig reserved.

It goes well with pancakes (use the grease for the batter), chicken livers (when I can find a small enough container in the supermarket), and the odd BLT in an eatery. However, even if the price increased by an order of magnitude, it wouldn't greatly incommode my budget. I have plenty of other consolations.
