I am more than a little concerned about the effects our political system is having on kids... They don't deserve it... Nor do their parents...

This 24/7-365 campaigning is nothing short of a civil war and out kids are suffering just like kids in Egypt...

We need a serious reset on our elections and our broken government...

I have a bit of a different perspective. Sounds to me like that little girl's life is way too dominated by time watching TV.

Janie... yeah. Kinda sounds to me like the "adult" in that situation that keeps goading the little girl to keep crying for the camera needs a good swift kick in the arse. Kinda looks to me like child abuse and it sickens me. Fuck politics... someone needs to educate the bitch behind the camera to take better care of the children in her charge.

Seriously. That is absolutely disgusting... beyond comprehension.

Pardon me if I'm just a tad suspicious of that video. She is way to young to understand what is going on. Her parents most likely coached her for this performance.

"This 24/7-365 campaigning is nothing short of a civil war..."
"We need a serious reset on our elections and our broken government"

Bobert, you never wrote truer words. This election has not yet been settled, and I'd bet my house that both sides already have contingent strategies in place for the next election. And all media are aiding and abetting, if not outright encouraging them to implement theses strategies immediately.

The first and foremost way to reset elections and government is to somehow discourage professional legislators. But all politics is local and most often we keep returning the same folks to Washington, while we despise Congress as a body. California term-limits state office holders, and legislators, but would the Constitution permit that for national legislators? Why not if the Executive is term-limited? I heard it said that the Founders did not envision a permanent political class, but early on it turned out that way. It has just gotten worse. I wonder if anyone has ever ranked the amount of time individuals have stayed in elected government at all levels from local to state to federal offices.

According to earlier news reports that also featured the video, it was taken at a political rally that the parents took the kid to.

They might have thought it would be an "educational experience" although my opinion would be that at her age it's a little like signing up 7 year old kids to play kiddie football so they can "have the experience" of early concussions and a few ripped tendons to prepare them for the early Alzheimers and arthritis characteristic of the grownup pros; but it's possible they just couldn't afford a baby sitter.

Or it could be an outright fraud.

50/50 odds on either.

John

Seems to me like a perfectly understandable reaction on anyone's part...not just on the part of that little girl. Who wouldn't be tired of hearing about Obama and Romney at this point?

As Bobert said, "This 24/7-365 (day a year) campaigning is nothing short of a civil war"

Well, yeah, it's pretty much like a civil war...just without the gunfire and actual killing, so far.

It's awful. It's shameful in its negativity. It doesn't let up. It continually hurts the nation that it's supposedly serving. It's no sensible way to run a government, an electoral system or a nation.

This little girl seems to be around 5 or 6 years old. She is genuinely upset (vis the tears on her face and the red eyes) If your little daughter was in this state, would you be filming her on your mobile phone? I find it a bit suspicious that she knows the full names of the two candidates, and saying she's 'tired' of them is also quite odd. She needs a cuddle and a kiss, not a camera stuck in her face. People are strange aren't they?

I'd like to see everything that's been said, written, postulated, intimated, or otherwise uttered during this election campaign packed up in a lead-lined box covered with "TOXIC" labels and dumped down the deepest bore-hole ever drilled, never to be seen or heard from again.

If this election weren't so close that every vote is going to count, I'd vote for Chongo.

The video was featured in multiple TV news broadcasts across the country, beginning almost a week ago. Since it's too much trouble for what you learn, and hard to make useful notes, I don't look at most "TV news" on the web, or play most video inserts when there are text reports, but it's been imbedded in numerous reports with useful text. No need to go just to YouTube for it if you read the (web) newspapers.

The reports I've seen, however, didn't say whether it was mommy with a phonecam or some idiot TV reporter that shot it.

As a news report, it does capture about what a lot of us have been thinking about the campaign reporting - at multiple levels.

What I find so abhorrent, is the sheer $COST of all this bizarre campaigning...

I mean, it's an election, right?

You put a cross on a bit of paper and it's over...but no, they spend $billions whilst $TRILLIONS in debt!

WTF is it all about, Alfie?

Lizzie, it isn't money taken out of the treasury that's used for compaigning, it's contributions from interested parties. And they're trying to convince you to put your "X" in the box of their choice.

Kind of basic, really.

"contributions from interested parties" equals vote-buying, and it results in a corrupted process where the richest elements in society get what they want in government.

It would be better if all candidates were funded equally (and modestly) from the public purse, and all got exactly the same amount of neutral media coverage during a campaign, so they could fairly present themselves and their ideas without being slandered and demonized. That would be a fair and uncorrupted system. It would also be: socialism! (gasp!)

Little Hawk, it also represents $3.00 here, $5.00 there, and $20 somewhere else from millions of people giving what they can. And many of those who can't give much are kicking in with such tasks as canvassing and phone banks.

Am there. Doing that.

There's more of us than there are of them. We'll see how it shakes out. It's not a foregone conclusion like you seem to think.

Apparently the girl's mother claimed that they had been going somewhere in the car with the radio tuned to NPR which was doing a series of news features about the candidates. If I had been driving with a child that age who was getting upset, I would have switched to a folk show if one was available. If not, I would have switched to the 24-hour classical music public radio station.

And most of us in the UK would like to see the same here.

No billionaire donors for the Tories, and no group donations from trades unions who claim "The money's from our million members". Sure it is, but the power it generates when collectively applied keeps the Labour Party in thrall to Union interests, and if I wanted government by Unions I'd want to vote for it.

FFS Don, stop and think it through. Without union funding the rich can outspend the rest of us and there is no level playing field only a perpetual advantage for government by the rich, for the rich. But, oh, hang on, despite being poor that's what you want, isn't it?

No you clown, I've already said I agree with LH, so how does that gel with your nonsense assessment of my position.

Read what people say! It's a good way, generally, to find out what they mean.

To save you the intellectual stress of reading other peoples' posts, here is the comment I heartily endorse from LH:

""It would be better if all candidates were funded equally (and modestly) from the public purse, and all got exactly the same amount of neutral media coverage during a campaign, so they could fairly present themselves and their ideas without being slandered and demonized. That would be a fair and uncorrupted system. It would also be: socialism! (gasp!)""

I could easily live with the socialism of that solution.

PS I don't think that you could live with it though, since the unions would lose their political influence and be confined to what should be their remit, the best employment interests of their members.

That would be a new experience for them, since the last union bosses who did that are retired or dead.

I am reminded of the day when the comment was made to the worthy (?) Mr Kinnock:

""One day the unions will come to you and say "Neil?",........AND YOU WILL!""

How true, and how WRONG for unelected bodies to try to influence parliament in that way.

Don T.
