Israel blames Hamas for keeping shut Gaza crossing
Associated Press – 11 hrs ago

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli military spokesman says the militant Islamic group Hamas has pressured a Palestinian contractor into keeping closed the Gaza side of the only cargo crossing with Israel.
Maj. Guy Inbar says the crossing was set to open on Monday but the Palestinian operator of the crossing said he wouldn't come to work.
Inbar says Hamas wants control of the crossing, operated by its rival, the secular Palestinian Authority that governs the West Bank. There was no comment from Hamas.
The Kerem Shalom crossing was closed for a week after Gaza militants fired a rocket at the Israeli city of Ashkelon. The crossing is an economic lifeline for the territory's impoverished 1.6 million Palestinians, providing the vast majority of consumer goods.
Inbar says 70 trucks were waiting to enter Gaza.

So, HAMAS shuts down the border, starving all those Palestinian children, and no one can be bothered to comment?

Yet when Israel does it, it is genocide.

What seems to have happened is that the authorities in Gaza have appointed a different concessionaire to operate the crossing, and Israel is refusing to allow the change to take place, so the closing of the crossing imposed by Israel on Tuesday is still in force.

All very silly. But not perhaps precisely what is asserted by the Israeli military spots man.

Hamas blocks Israel supplies with takeover of Gaza border terminal

Special to WorldTribune.com
TEL AVIV — Israel has reported an attempt by the Hamas regime to
take over a border crossing.
The Israel Army said Hamas has forced the closing of its only cargo
border terminal with Israel. The Army said Hamas pressured a Palestinian
contractor not to open the facility on March 4.

Officials said Israel has become the leading supplier to the Gaza Strip
amid a crackdown on smuggling by Egypt. They said the crackdown has blocked shipments of arms, fuel and construction material.
Israel had closed the Kerem Shalom terminal for a week in wake of a
rocket attack from the Gaza Strip on Feb. 26. On March 4, Inbar said, 70
trucks had been waiting to enter Gaza from Kerem Shalom, which also links to the border with Egypt.
"The Palestinian contractor said he would not come to work," military
spokesman Maj. Guy Inbar said.
The Gaza Strip side of the Israeli cargo terminal has come under the
control of the Palestinian Authority. Officials said Hamas has insisted on
taking control of the cargo crossing, through which 300 trucks per day enter the Gaza Strip.
"The crossing is currently not operating, as the Palestinian contractor
responsible for the Palestinian side decided not to open the crossing
today," the Office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the
Territories said. "His decision stems from attempts by Hamas to replace the
current contractor with one of their choosing. Hamas has been actively
trying to push the Palestinian Authority out and take charge of the
management of Kerem Shalom so that they may collect revenue from goods that
enter Gaza."
"These actions by Hamas endanger the current security arrangements and
threaten the operability of the crossing," the coordinator's office said."

And for Don, from that great Israeli source...
GAZA CITY - Israel's sole crossing for goods traffic into the Gaza Strip remained shut on Monday, 24-hours after Israel said it would end a week-long closure. Israel said the holdup was because of attempts by the strip's militant Hamas rulers to introduce procedural changes and divert customs revenues earmarked for their rivals, the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. "Over 70 trucks laden with food and other goods are currently waiting on the Israeli side of the Kerem Shalom crossing for their Palestinian counterparts," an Israeli defence ministry statement said. "The Palestinian contractor responsible for the Palestinian side decided not to open the crossing today," it added. "His decision stems from attempts by Hamas to replace the current contractor with one of their choosing.""Hamas has been actively trying to push the Palestinian Authority out and take charge of the management of Kerem Shalom so that they may collect revenue from goods that enter Gaza," it said."Israel cannot allow the operation of the crossing under such circumstances given the security risks."A Palestinian source at the crossing said that Hamas was seeking to impose new duties on the import of goods into its territory."The Hamas government refused access to hundreds of trucks loaded with goods and aid to the Gaza Strip via the Kerem Shalom terminal because it wants to impose new charges on the haulage company," the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.Hamas said that the problem was due Israel's refusal to lower its fees for use of the crossing.A statement from the Hamas economy ministry released by government news agency Al-Rai said that movement of goods was expected to resume on Tuesday.Israel shut down operations at the crossing and also cut pedestrian access to Israel through the Erez crossing after a rocket from Gaza struck southern Israel last Tuesday.

Israel: Hamas Prevents Gaza Crossing's Reopening
Striking Truckers Led Hamas to Oust Crossing Operators
by Jason Ditz, March 04, 2013
Print This | Share This
The cargo crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, which was shuttered last week after Israeli troops shot three protesters, remains closed today despite Israeli plans to reopen it, and military officials say it is Hamas' doing.

The crossing had been controlled by the Palestinian Authority, despite the PA having virtually no control over the strip, and Hamas forced the contractor operating it on behalf of the PA to stop, with allegations of price gouging and striking truck drivers apparently prompting the move.

The company was informed by Hamas that they were being "relieved" of the crossing and they informed Israel they weren't showing up for Monday's reopening, keeping the 70 trucks on the Israeli side waiting on the border.

It's unclear how long the crossing will remain closed, but it comes in the wake of Hamas announcing new exit restrictions on Gaza civilians looking to travel to Israel or the West Bank, so this could be part of a broader closing of the strip to the outside world.

Hamas Imposes Exit Restrictions on Gazans Traveling to Israel, West Bank
Travel, Already Difficult With Israeli Restrictions, to Become Impossible for Many
Good thing that Hamas is taking such great care of the population of Gaza. ...

by Jason Ditz, March 03, 2013

Travel between the Gaza Strip and the outside world has for the past several years been the province of only a few privileged people, well connected enough to secure Israeli permission to leave the strip to travel to Israel or the occupied West Bank.

Navigating the Israeli system to secure permission to leave is no longer enough, however, as Hamas has announced it will ban all travel to Israel or the West Bank that is not previously authorized by the Hamas Interior Ministry.

Since Israel's own system is fraught with delays and last-minute approvals, getting timely Hamas approval on top of that is going to be difficult, and entirely impractical for people seeking emergency trips abroad for medical treatment or family emergencies.

Businessmen say that their understanding is that the new requirement won't apply to "regular travelers," nor apparently will it apply to anyone leaving by way of Egypt. Hamas has previously restricted travel of Fatah members in the Gaza Strip, and in late 2011 attempted a similar "exit visa" program, which it scrapped in the face of popular protests.

""Hamas said that the problem was due Israel's refusal to lower its fees for use of the crossing""

Not exactly an altruistic action for the benefit of hungry Gaza strip residents then?

""The cargo crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip, which was shuttered last week after Israeli troops shot three protesters,""

Slightly different story from the OP reference to a rocket.

""Hamas forced the contractor operating it on behalf of the PA to stop, with allegations of price gouging and striking truck drivers apparently prompting the move.""

Not exactly the same as claims that Hamas acted out of a desire to control the crossing. Seems they may simply be trying to combat corruption.

Isn't that the legitimate pursuit of elected governments? And last I heard, Hamas, not Israel, governs the internal afrfairs of the Gaza strip.

That is my one and only comment on this entirely unnecessary self indulgence on the part of the ubiquitous Israeli apologist, Bearded Bruce.

Israel Capitulates, Reopens Gaza Crossing in Recognition of Hamas Rule

The PA has lost its last foothold in Gaza and taxes on goods will go straight to Hamas.
By:         Yori Yanover
Published: March 5th, 2013
Israeli forces on Tuesday reopened the Kerem Shalom commercial border crossing with Gaza, after a week-long closure, a Palestinian official told Ma'an.

Palestinian Authority official Raed Fattouh said that the crossing will operate regularly on Tuesday, with 390 truckloads of goods set to enter Gaza and one truck of flowers to leave.

Israel closed the commercial crossing last Tuesday after a rocket was fired from Gaza toward Ashkelon in southern Israel, but agreed to reopen it Monday.

A dispute between Hamas and the company operating the crossing further delayed its opening. When the dispute was over, the franchise for operating the Gaza side of the crossing was taken away from the company with an authorization from the Palestinian Authority and given over to a company beholden to Hamas. That removed the last vestige of the PA's official presence in the Gaza Strip. And Israel, which until Tuesday could pretend to only be dealing with Hamas indirectly, through the PA – is now dealing directly with Hamas.

Officials in Gaza told Ma'an that the Hamas government dismissed the company in charge of the terminal after a dispute over the collection of customs revenue.

The officials told Ma'an that Hamas wants to keep the taxes, which are usually paid to the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in Judea and Samaria. Now everything will be going directly to the true rulers of Gaza, with Israel's full support.

Truck drivers at Kerem Shalom told Ma'an that rivalries over control of the crossing were impeding their work. Now, thank God, peace is restored and the Hamas coffers will fill up again. Those coffers had gone bare recently, because the Egyptians are flooding the smuggling tunnels with sewer water, depriving Hamas of import fees on the smuggled goods

Hamas closes Gaza crossing
Published Monday 04/03/2013 (updated) 07/03/2013 16:53

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Hamas government in Gaza closed the Kerem Shalom crossing on Monday, despite the fact Israel had agreed to reopen it after a one week closure.

Israel closed the commercial crossing last Tuesday after a rocket was fired from Gaza toward Ashkelon in southern Israel, but agreed to reopen it Monday.

However, the border remained closed on the Palestinian side.

Officials in Gaza, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the issue, said the Hamas government in Gaza has fired the company that operates the terminal after a dispute over the collection of customs revenue.

The officials told Ma'an that Hamas wants to keep the taxes, which are usually paid to the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

Hamas has decided to appoint a new company to run the terminal, they said.

Truck drivers at Kerem Shalom told Ma'an that rivalries over control of the crossing were impeding their work, adding that they hoped the terminal would reopen soon.

Israel's Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Eitan Dangot has told PA officials that Israel considers Hamas' appointment of a new company to run Kerem Shalom a security risk, the Israeli news site Ynet reported Monday.

Israel cooperated with the previous contractor because he operated the crossing on behalf of the PA, Ynet reported, noting that Israel will not coordinate with Hamas.

Ynet said that Hamas was demanding a tax of 170 shekels (around $46) for each truck that enters Gaza, to make up for lost profits from tunnel revenue after Cairo cracked down on smuggling under the Egyptian border.

Erez crossing

Meanwhile, Hamas is imposing new restrictions at the Erez crossing, the only passenger terminal on the Israeli border.

The government in Gaza announced Wednesday that residents must seek permission from the Ministry of Interior to enter Israel via the Erez crossing.

Palestinians already needed a permit from Israel to cross Erez.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights criticized Hamas' decision.

"Freedom of movement is already severely restricted by Israel; travelers have to wait many hours before being allowed to pass through the crossing and they are subjected to humiliating treatment," PCHR said in a statement.

The Gaza-based group noted that Israeli authorities usually only granted Palestinians permits a few hours prior to their departure, and often the permits are only valid for one day.

"This makes it impossible for them to refer to the Ministry of Interior to obtain prior approval for their travel," PCHR said.

It seems that your information is somewhat flawed, i.e. untrue!
Israel had already closed the border which was due to re-open, but when they objected to the change of operator and the current Gaza contractor went home, it remained closed.

However your claim that Israel doesn't care is wrong. The following from Israel National News website, 5th March 2013.:-

""The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (CoGAT), Maj.-Gen. Eitan Dangot, spoke this morning with senior PA officials in Ramallah regarding the unfolding events, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dangot emphasized that "Israel cannot allow the operation of the crossing under such circumstances given the security risks," according to the Foreign Ministry.
""

Also from the same article, a confirmation that, of all the many times that the crossing has been closed this is the only closure by Hamas, so who do we think has had the most deleterious effect on the children (and adults) of Gaza?

I'm just waiting for Keith to claim that website is anti Israel. I wouldn't be surprised.

Israel closes it when it is rocketed from Gaza, as right now.

But,
Hamas closes Gaza crossing

Of course, the fact that Hamas did speak on the subject and state that they changed the operator in response to corruption, has to be a lie, because you can't ever believe anything an Arab tells you, eh Keith?

Oh, yeah, you believed those anonymous officials! They were Arabs, weren't they?

I guess they must be the good Arabs whose story gels with your prejudice.

No Don.
I never believe what the politicians say.

Oh, yeah, you believed those anonymous officials! They were Arabs, weren't they?

What the people actually involved confide to independent Palestinian, Arab journalists is far more credible, yes.

Now I'm getting it.

Arabs are only liars when what they say disagrees with your viewpoint.

You do like your cards well stacked, don't you?

And if you don't believe any politicians, who are the Israelis whose denials you support?

That's why I suggested you keep digging. The hole is up to your bottom lip, so another two or three inches should stifle the worst of your self contradictions

It has nothing to do with race Don.
Politicians do lie.
Do you always believe them without question?

If an accusation is denied, then evidence is required whoever the accuser and accused are.

Here we have independent journalist, themselves Palestinian Arabs, reporting what the actual officials who run the crossings confided to them.

To me that carries more weight than embarrassed politicians' denials.

More on Hamas-

GAZA (Reuters) - New rules from the Education Ministry of the Islamist Hamas movement ruling the Gaza Strip will bar men from teaching at girls' schools and mandate separate classes for boys and girls from the age of nine.
The law, published on Monday, would go into effect next school year and applies throughout the coastal enclave, including in private, Christian-led and United Nations schools.
Critics of the new measures say the Islamist movement is trying to force its ideology on society, but proponents say they merely want to codify conservative Palestinian values into law.
"We are a Muslim people. We do not need to make people Muslims, and we are doing what serves our people and their culture," Waleed Mezher, the Education Ministry's legal adviser, told Reuters.
Hamas has administered Gaza since fighting a brief civil war with its Palestinian rivals in the secular Fatah party in 2007, a year after it won a surprise majority in Palestinian parliamentary polls.
The political split paralyzed the legislature and mostly prevented the passing of new laws in Gaza and the West Bank.
But Hamas parliamentarians in Gaza acted alone to approve the new education law, and the movement's critics have for years accused it of trying to build a separate state in Gaza.
Zeinab Al-Ghoneimi, a Gaza activist for women's rights, said the new law was part of a Hamas project to impose its values on Gaza residents.
"To say that the old law did not respect the community's traditions and that they (Hamas) wanted to reform people now is an insult to the community," Ghoneimi told Palestinian radio.
"Instead of hiding behind traditions, why don't they say clearly they are Islamists and they want to Islamize the community," she said.
Private and Christian schools, where classes are mixed until high school, would be the most affected by the decision. Gaza's government-run schools were already mostly gender-segregated.
The Gaza Education Ministry said the private schools had been invited to discuss the legislation before it was enacted but failed to do so.
Hamas leaders have repeatedly denied accusations by human rights groups they are trying to impose Islamic laws on Gaza.
Rights activists have criticized moves by Hamas's government in recent years to impose Islamic dress on female lawyers and school girls, ban men from working as hairdressers for women and interrogate couples walking in Gaza's streets.

Hamas Is Shaving the Heads of Young Long-Haired Men in Gaza
By Adam Clark Estes | The Atlantic Wire – 10 hrs ago

In the past week or so, police in Gaza City are cracking down on what they believe is a scourge of sacrilegious young men based on some pretty questionable criteria: fancy hair styles and fashionable pants. The Associated Press just published a report on how Hamas is taking their mission to impose strict Islamic practices on the people and says the police are literally "grabbing young men with long or gel-styled spiky hair off the streets, bundling them into jeeps, mocking them and shaving their heads." Apparently, too-tight jeans or low-waisted pants will also get you nabbed. It's no fun. "The only thing I want to do is leave this country," said Ayman al-Sayed, a 19--year-old Gaza resident who was abducted last week. "I am scared. They just take you from the street without reason. I don't know what they are going to do next."
Human rights groups obviously aren't thrilled about this new practice, but there might not be anything they can do to stop it. Hamas has been escalating its campaign to transform Palestinian society into something that looks more like Iran than it does the Gaza Strip. Last week, we learned that Hamas was splitting up schools by gender to better conform to strict Islamic standards. The law goes into effect at the beginning of next school year, but they're not exactly being transparent about these efforts. Zeinab al-Ghoneimi, a woman's civil rights advocate, told Reuters last week, "Instead of hiding behind traditions, why don't they say clearly they are Islamists and they want to Islamise the community."
Unfortunately, the list goes on. Hamas has kept women from competing in sporting events and are trying to force women to cover themselves with burqas, though there's been a lot of pushback on that front. With the looming threat of being kidnapped and beaten, young men will probably think twice about what they wear, now, too.
