So many good wishes from such a strange group.......What must you think of us? I don't know but I'd suggest you think this: "WOW!!! I'll bet I'm the only kid in my school who gets Birthday greetings from all over the world!"

We've all followed your life from the day you were born and are all pretty impressed with the young man you have become. Now do me a favor and give your very special Mom a hug for me for being your Mom.

By channels of coolness the echoes are calling,
And down the dim gorges I hear the creek falling:

freda underhill- I don't know Morgan's response to 'Bell Birds' but I like it. Vivid imagery, brings back a favorite memory of mine. One Autumn I went up into the Ochoco National Forest in central Oregon. Whole forest of Ponderosa Pine (a tall, reddish-brown tree with deeply carved and patterned bark); which kills underbrush and the branches are high off the ground so it is like walking in a park. The undisturbed duff is thick and cushiony underfoot.

Then every once in awhile, the Ponderosa pull back, forming a meadow, and there in the middle of the meadow is a grove of Aspens where shines "October, the maiden of bright yellow tresses". It is like the very sun is caught in their branches.

Not your birthday yet, Morgan. Just keeping the thread present.

Freda, "Bell Birds" was one of the poems I learnt at High School some 55 years ago.
A lovely poem which I still recite from memory.

Dear Morgan,

Your first birthday without your dear grandma. Honest, this will be the most difficult. The first of each anniversary or holiday is the hardest. We always, always think of our dear ones who are gone from us but special days like this are tough. You know she did not leave you because she wanted to, that she was struggling to keep on and wanted to spend more years with you.

When my dad was dying of cancer, among the very last words he was able to speak, "I just bought little boy his first car. Now everyone in the family has his own car." I hoped this meant he would live but what it did was express his wish that he could live to buy "little boy" his first car at age 16. My son was not yet 3 years old and his relationship with his granddad was special - like yours with your grandma. Although they had less than 3 years together, I know that gave my son a special sense of himself that I still see 50 years later.

You have been gifted with that special relationship with your grandma. You know her in your deepest self and she lives in you. You will listen to her all your life. And you will miss her too. Nothing can ever take from you the gifts she has given you. She would wish you to have a very happy birthday. Let it be so. You can celebrate her life with the best possible birthday.

Happy Birthday, Morgan! I know you don't know me...but I knew your grandma....at least on these virtual pages. She was a great lady, gentle, but with a fierce pride and a backbone harder than steel. The kind of lady any one would be proud to know and call friend.

Anyway, give your lovely mum a big old hug for me and for you, because she is surely missing her mum, especially on your big 10 year day....my god, ten years. I remember when Kat bragged about your birth. Good luck to ya, mate, and stay strong, but remember it is ok to weep for her, and to miss her. Being strong is also never being afraid to show your tenderness. Take it easy.
