Subject: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST,Guest Date: 05 Mar 14 - 09:16 PM As I see the increasing number of posts from one Guest or another, replying/commenting to another Guest post, it made me dizzy. But, I had a thought. Could a thread be deemed somewhat successful (let's say.reach 100) made up entirely of Guest post content, with no other posters other than Guests? Here Goes, post any topic, what you will, (or not) - swim or sink, Guest thread: Signed, Guest |

Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST Date: 06 Mar 14 - 01:49 AM Did you know that if you holler in a large enough empty building the sound will echo 12 times? |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST Date: 06 Mar 14 - 02:38 AM The guests troll in, the guests troll out.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 06 Mar 14 - 03:39 AM Well, I'm a Guest and not a Troll. Hello! Just wanted to say I've always enjoyed Mudcat and the Members seem to know me and respond kindly to my posts. I should think an exclusively Guest thread might be a little bland, as the Members are a feisty lot and have some cracking good discussions and, yes, battles. All good fun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: Ed T Date: 06 Mar 14 - 05:24 AM Maybe guests could have ID numbers, to identify one from the other, or names. Oh, I forgot, we have names, our own or made-up ones, already. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST, Date: 06 Mar 14 - 05:24 AM At first I assumed you meant only anonymous guests, but I've found a way to make my posts anonymous but still distinguishable. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST,Not realy a guest... Date: 06 Mar 14 - 05:36 AM ...but don't like to be left out :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST Date: 06 Mar 14 - 06:22 AM We do have ID numbers. Joe Offer and SRS amongst others know exaclty who we are due to our IP addresses. Or at least in my case I laughed my head off when something I wrote anonymously was credited to a member and he was emailed apparently. If at least three other people I know post from work, then the IP system is defunct as there are over 10,000 PCs share a single IP for outside communciation. (Big corporate server, locked down in some ways but Mudcat doesnt seem to hit the filter like some social networking sites.) So, Bloody Bugger Bum. He said it, not me. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST,CrazyEddie Date: 06 Mar 14 - 06:31 AM Is a guest-only thread "memberist"? And more importantly, how long do you need to be a guest, before you are considered "folk"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Mar 14 - 06:32 AM As it says on the membership page:
People won't mind if you use a consistent pseudonym if you feel uncomfortable using your own name, but common human courtesy demands that you not play games with your identity. If you want to be respected here, use a consistent name or pseudonym. Yes, the "rules" allow you to do otherwise, but don't expect people to respect you for playing identity games with them. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: gnu Date: 06 Mar 14 - 07:54 AM gnu is not a pseudonym. It's a pseudonyckname. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: GUEST Date: 06 Mar 14 - 10:24 AM I was only kidding about hollering in a large enough building's 12-time echo. I know no such thing, and I think it is highly unlikely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: gnu Date: 06 Mar 14 - 11:28 AM I'll echo that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: Jack the Sailor Date: 06 Mar 14 - 12:09 PM Eliza, I love ya! You know that I do. But the name you use or don't use very much colors how people perceive your posts. I doubt that people would know it was you or care that it is you if you dropped the name. Joe has a point. But may I point out that respect is very hard to come by in this forum and in this forum, as in life, some of those with the most respect have done the least to earn it. It seems that one Guest in particular claims to be using no name because his handle was abused but he seems to be abusing his lack of a handle as a cover for anonymous snide remarks. Other people who post without name might keep in mind that anything they post that way is likely to be read with sarcasm detectors turned on high because of the actions of that guest. If indeed there is only one of these unnamed whiny snipers. |

"No, I'm Spartacus" (I'm pretty sure I know who you are...but I'm afraid I'm no longer sympathetic to your continuing reluctance to be anyone.) Yes, I have read your occasional "I don't care, this is how it is." remarks. (well...gee... I 'guess' that was you claiming not to care.) See? Oh, you see... you just don't care. Right... "It doesn't have to make sense to you, it's our policy" |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: gnu Date: 07 Mar 14 - 12:40 PM Oh RATS! I thought this thread was to be a fun thread. A lark. I started my thread (closed, for good reason) because I was POd at a few certain guests and was quickly reminded, nay, corrected, that one bad apple does NOT spoil the bunch. I found that out because one particular guest contacted me. This guest is the salt of the earth and has good reasons to post as 'guest' Don't even think about asking me what those reasons are. It is up to Max to set policy and he has done so. Drop it! Now, let's have some good-natured banter and some fun and leave moderation and policy to the site owner and his crew. Carry on. Smoke em if ya got em. |

Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: JohnInKansas Date: 07 Mar 14 - 02:12 PM From: GUEST Date: 07 Mar 14 - 09:33 AM Quote examples, Jack. I'll own up to my remarks. GUEST, with no other identification, has made 100,535 posts at mudcat (as of a few moments ago). Some of those posts do not reflect favorably on the person(s?) responsible. While some of tho anonymous ones may have been from persons who don't know that they can do better, anyone who deliberately uses that "identity" must accept the blame for all of the worst of them. THEY ARE ALL YOURS. How many would you like us to cite? John |
Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: Jeri Date: 07 Mar 14 - 02:51 PM "GUEST, with no other identification..." Missed the part about "I'll own up to my remarks" then. People are ALWAYS better off taking what's posted at face value. Even if you think you know the person posting, when you ascribe motives and read sarcasm into a message, you have a good chance of being wrong. Just read what's there! I've heard people complain because they go to a session they've never been to before and don't understand the "rules". They don't know what's acceptable or how to join in. They can't figure it out for themselves because it's NEW, and nobody has told them how to act. It's not so dissimilar from those who complain about the anonymous ones. They don't have a clue how to treat someone unless they already know who it is. The culture of this place now is such that people read posts LOOKING for reasons to be offended, to argue, or just bitch slap the poster. They DON'T look for reasons to help, to understand or just be nice. Long ago, I saw a new person hounded off the forum because one very obnoxious person thought she was pretending to be someone she wasn't. I've seen people use different identities here, and they all believed "everyone else is doing it". THEY were the only ones doing it. Just respond to what's on the screen and stop looking for excuses to treat other people badly. Sooner or later, it's going to come around to you. |

Subject: RE: BS: Only for Guests From: gnu Date: 07 Mar 14 - 05:49 PM Jeri makes an... I was gonna say 'excellent' point but she makes more than one. She kicked my ass just lately and I deserved it. I was being weeny like a little kid on the playground who felt hard done by and asked her for advice. She gave it to me in spades! But... fact is, she is right, plain and simple. Suck it up and deal with it and stop yer weenin. Those are the rules... there are no rules except one... play nice. Cross that line and yer gone. I remember somewhere... oh darn... hmmm... oh! yeah! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. My problem has always been that when someone fucks with me or my friends or anyone herin, I follow the same rule and that does NOT work in open forum on the internUT. It just don't work at all. Jus sayin eh? Jeri... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyRZTAmcW7c |
