Subject: BS: Thanks, Obama
From: Joe Offer
Date: 14 Jun 14 - 11:30 PM

I guess I have never known of a U.S. President who has been more hated, than Barack Hussein Obama (the right-wingers like to emphasize the Hussein). Personally, I like Barack Obama. In fact, I like him more than any president who has held office during my lifetime, with the possible exception of Harry Truman (but I was four when Harry left office).

Today I came across a website called knowyourmeme.com. I admit that I don't fully understand the definition of the term "meme," but "Thanks, Obama" appears to be one of the more popular memes on the Internet today. Apparently, it refers to the habit of blaming Barack Obama for all sorts of things he couldn't possibly have any effect on. Here's the definition the Website gives:
"Thanks, Obama!" is a sarcastic expression used by critics of President Barack Obama to blame personal troubles and inconveniences on public policies supported or enacted by the administration. The phrase is often used to caption animated GIFs in which the subject appears to be struggling with a rather simple task, satirizing those who scapegoat Obama as the cause of problems for which he has little or no influence.

    Origin
On December 17th, 2009, the conservative political blog Authentic Connecticut Republican[1] published a post highlighting a demotivational poster of a young girl making a "middle finger" gesture with the caption "Thanks, Obama."

    Comments?

    -Joe-

Oh, I suppose I shouldn't have, because it's kinda not fair; but it brightens things up to do it occasionally. But who are you to talk, SRS? You can do it, too.
Usually, I just post music-related photos, and I'll do it for anyone who asks. But for the most part, no photos for BS.

From the perspective of this side of the Atlantic, the extreme conservatism of many American politicians and pundits seems to be holding your great Nation back, Joe. Mind you, I don't belive that the Conservative government, here in the UK, is doing us any favours either!

Do you think the labels still have any meaning?

What do Europeans think of Barack Obama, Shimrod? He's certainly not what I hoped he would be, but I think he's pretty good (considering the Congress he has to work with)
I live in an area where hatred of Obama runs rampant. I have to work hard to keep my mouth shut at times, but arguing with those bigots just isn't worth it....and they carry guns.

He tends to lauded and feted over here. His address to both houses of Parliament being a good example.

Nobody is a prophet in their own land and perhaps his politics are nearer to ours than his predecessor. Democrats always felt a warmer reception from the UK public although the whole American dream of guns, unaffordable healthcare and executing prisoners will always be foreign to us.

Oh, and spray on cheese.

I think that he's highly respected, Joe. But I also suspect that his hands are tied. Mind you he must be doing something right in order to get elected twice!

Currently, I'm fascinated by the situation in Ukraine. I think both Obama and Putin have handled it like chess players - rather than 'all-guns-blazing-cowboys'. I think that Putin is as interesting as Obama; ruthless (as a Russian leader probably needs to be) but cunning and wily like a fox. I suspect that both leaders have each others measure.

There are more hateful remarks about Obama than any president since Truman... (and *I* am old enuf to remember the nasty Truman 'jokes'.) But remember... Obama was elected twice.

When he got into office, those who flatly hated the IDEA of a person of African heritage in the job began immediately spouting any and all criticisms... and the ones who were clever enough to not directly make racist remarks began to throw generic mud at everything he did... or tried to do. You see, they realized that this was an intelligent, witty, educated, well-spoken, honest **Democrat** who also happened to be black, and who had to potential to embarrass the Republicans by doing good things and getting *horrors* credit!...unless they fought him every step of the way. He got 2 years of opportunity before the 2010 census & redistricting allowed 'them' to rig elections all over the country... and then to try to restrict voting in ways to reduced minority influence!

Note: the Republicans and Tea Party types almost never seem to put up candidates who have gone to school and studied and become competent in the skills needed to understand economics, world affairs, environmental issues, social issues...etc. They just study ways to cheat, pressure single-issue zealots and repeat nasty talking points & slogans. They can't FIND a conservative candidate who is both intelligent and who is also far enough right to satisfy the lunatic fringe populating the party right now.

Barack Obama IS one of the most well-prepared, intelligent presidents of MY lifetime... and thus a real problem for his opponents. They know that there are other well-prepared, intelligent Democrats waiting for 2016, so all they can do is begin the same sort of attacks early.... (I wonder what they would accuse Elizabeth Warren of if SHE decided to run?)

Alas, Bill, Elizabeth Warren has been guilty since birth of something almost as bad (in the reactionaries' eyes) as being born Black...she was born female and is still guilty of it.

Sigh.

Somewhere in my youth I remember a quotation from, I believe, Thomas Jefferson: "I regret for my country when I reflect that God is just."

Lynn, that quote is indeed Jefferson & the whole deserves elaboration:

"God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever. Commerce between master and slave is despotism. Nothing is more certainly written in the book of fate than that these people are to be free."

When there was a move afoot to racially integrate the armed forces, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for their own reasons, balked. But Harry Truman was adamant. He called a meeting of the JCS in his office. Waiting for Truman to appear, their jaws were set, their heels were dug in, and they were going to fight him every inch of the way.

When the President walked in, as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, he issued a terse order. Integrate the armed forces. Then he turned on his heel and walked out. All those firm jaws went slack.

No discussion. That was an order. Case closed.

Before that, Franklin D. Roosevelt, with his inauguration of agencies regulating the excesses of Wall Street, and starting the New Deal and putting people back to work with programs like the WPA, CCC, and such, thus ending the Great Depression drew really nasty fire from the usual suspects. Such things as appealing to hatred and prejudice by claiming that his name was really "Rosenfelt," he was Jewish, and he was deep into to International Jewish Conspiracy. He was also labeled a Communist, a Socialist, a Fascist, and just about every other nasty epithet anyone could think up.

There were also a couple of commentators who made a career of bad-mouthing and attacking Eleanor Roosevelt.

So the Yahoos attacking President Obama and family are Old Stuff. Same old same old.

(Sigh....)

President Obama appears to be completely out of his depth. He is not a leader of stature.

The fact that he was blackish, served the intended purpose and led most Americans to believe that there was to be a new beginning, but as most seasoned observers said it has turned out to be "smoke and mirrors.
Mr Obama was steeped in Chicago Dem politics, the foundations of the system never shifted one iota, "the people" got what they always get....what they deserve, for laziness and stupidity.

"President Obama will do exactly what he is allowed to do".....(Ake, immediately before Mr Obama's election.)

Funny thing, Ake. People said that same thing about Roosevelt both before he was elected and during the four terms he served.

People kept re-electing him because he got things done. So to make sure that a phenomenon like FDR never happened again, they passed a law that says a President can't serve more that two terms. (No matter how many people would like to elect him--or her--again).

But--I do wish that President Obama would read up on FDR and learn how he did things. The man was a bulldozer! And Obama needs some of that.

Obama serves the corporate interests. He is a fascist.

He also does everything in his power to make his party look bad, setting the stage for a loss by the buffoonish Clinton. This will put an even more hardline fascist in the executive branch, someone like the messianic Ted Cruz.

Obama is arresting people for speaking out against him, setting the precedent for his successor to go even further.

You get that crap out of World Net Daily, the arch-conservative electronic newsletter (daily e-mail), Guest? That's the sort of buffalo chips they serve up on a daily basis. But then, there are a number of such.

It's obvious, especially if you follow their stuff for awhile, that their main problem with President Obama is that he is the wrong hue to be occupying the White House. But they dare not say that openly.

To be given the attention it deserves. The gentle breeze of Truth will dissipate the bad smell fairly quickly.

"Lazy and stupid"......On reflection, I am being unfair to the American People, who seem to sincerely believe in freedom AND democracy. They have been shamelessly manipulated by a very corrupt political class, who decided the time was right for a black president....flavour of the decade, as it were. They are the experts, they knew that President Obama could achieve nothing is the way of real change, even if he wanted. It was a sop to the centre liberals....and the black vote would ensure his election.

Comparisons with FDR are ludicrous, we live in a different time, we are different people.....Global Capitalism has organised itself. It can never, now, be reformed, certainly not a single generation.

Even here, on what some like to call enlightened Mudcat, you get the reactionary nastiness that plagues decent society.

"Elected because he was blackish."

You know, any of us could have said that, as most of us understand irony. Sadly, this was said as part of a post to condemn him.

As I said, over here he is well received. In history class, we are taught about USA segregation and for some, it was taught in current affairs, so in a way we saw the election of a black guy as progress rather than the norm.

The vast number of British people would however see his politics as more to the right than many of ours, as we did Clinton, Carter etc. Also, presumably like many Americans, we can't understand why he hasn't pushed his creed further and been more proactive on gun law, capital punishment and equality of opportunity, especially as the latter is bound up in "land of the free" slogans.

By the way, like any country, we have our mix of saints and sinners but contrary to the foaming at the mouth lies sometimes put forward by one specimen, nobody wants to go back to capital punishment here. The news article this morning about the proposed executions about to take place in two states are more concerned with "are they still insisting on barbaric practice?" rather than the crimes of the prisoners.

Point of information Ian, I am opposed to Capital punishment.
Men who rape or murder infants should be put out of their misery, for their own sake.

My post concerning President Obama, is not a condemnation of the man(pawn), but rather a condemnation of the entire corrupt political class, both in the US and UK.

Around 70% in favour of Capital Punishment for murder in some circumstances.

But you are opposed to capital punishment. Just do it humanely...

Glad we cleared that up.

On a serious note, the only way to get to the top is to act like a bloke who wants to get to the top. I have had many dealings with senior politicians, ministers and civil servants over here over the years and have even briefed a Prime Minister once. A couple remain good personal friends. I sincerely believe that the vast majority are good people who set out with fire in their belly and were captured by the system. I could never be a politician as the line between advocating the views of your constituency and prostituting your own values is a fine line indeed. I am not a member of any party and prefer to be one of the most powerful people in the land, (floating voter.)

When I was in South Africa, I was told many times that Peter Hain is revered as a God over there for his anti apartheid work. In The UK, he is just another ex minister who fiddled his expenses.

The link to Obama is clear. No one is a prophet in their own land. Must have been interesting to see how the democrats had to choose between a black guy and a woman. Neither had been tested against a Presidential election before. Neither seeking election in a country that is conservative to say the least.
