bbc reporting is crap!

so ISIS is invading Iraq.
now one thing we know for certain is that invasions cost money. we know we've paid for three of them in the last few years. so instead of telling us that ISIS is invading - tell us who is paying for all this organisation, bullets, bombs etc.

then we can decide which country to smack in the gob. lastime we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq (an old favourite!). neither of which - it turned out had anything to do with 9/11.

if we are going to invade a country that has nothing to do with ISIS - then Iceland or Switzerland would manage it better. they would put up extra parking meters for the tanks, and probably be quite decent about it. charge a lot for coffee or a beer - but that's foreigners for you...

Iceland would be a great escape. The more I hear about what is going on elsewhere it sounds like heaven.

Maybe too much news?
After all, most of us have little control over such events.

Why invade? Just offer to do a house swap for a month.

And didn't Britain have a ASWbase up there in WW2?

According to The Daily Beast ISIS is being funded by wealthy donors in Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, three US allies. Who's to know?

I fail to find humor in the events taking place in Iraq.

ISIS is composed of activist Sunnis. The Iraq government is Shia-dominated.
The invasion of Iraq and deposition of Saddam Husain threw out the Sunni government. Now the Sunnis are re-building and want their slice of the country.

The three hostile groups in Iraq are a recipe for chaos and death.
(The third being the Kurds)

The unholy mixture was created by British and French pens as they carved up the Ottoman Empire following WW1.

Come now, the Sunni and Shia were knocking the seven hells out of each other from mid 7th Century, long before either England or France were even conceived of.
True, Sykes-Picot did little to help, but they'd still have been at each others throats even if Lawrence had been listened to.

" ... find out who the enemy is. then kick the shit out of them."

Unfortunately, the 'enemy' (see bodad's entry above) are also the US and UK's 'allies' and supply us with lots and lots of oil. It's a funny, profoundly toxic old world!

Still, it won't be long until climate change (caused by the oil - and other fossil fuels) finishes our species off ... Peace will finally prevail then.

Yes , I believe that there was an RAF base in Iceland in WW2 ; British humourist and comedy-scriptwriter Frank Muir was stationed there , and didn't find it funny ! Skarpie has had a rough time too ,what with having his village wiped out by an un-pronounceable volano ,etc. No, let's invade Singapore, it is much nicer !!

Q is correct: British and French pens did create Iraq and Syria, but it doesn't follow that doing otherwise nearly 100 years ago would have resulted in a significantly different situation in Syria and Iraq today. Maybe, maybe not. Arguing about hypothetical situations is diverting but useless.

The conflict in Iraq today is not national but chiefly religious and tribal. Its ultimate causes have more to do with the 2003 invasion and the mishandling of the brief "peace" by all concerned.

As unjust as European colonial administration may have been, it resulted - while it lasted - in nothing like this.

Besides, pinpointing a historical moment that set the ball rolling for *anything* is a futile enterprise. Every historical event results from countless influences. And creates countless others. It *is* a jungle out there, a jungle of cause and effect.

Was it *merely* defeat in WW1 that made Germany attack Poland and perpetrate the Holocaust? Was it merely the Treaty of Versailles? Was it merely Hitler? Was it merely these things - and no others - all taken together?

Of course not.

No single act by the French, British, Israel, the USSR, Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Bush, NATO, al-Maliki, or Obama is *the* cause of the ISIS attack on Iraq.

We also need to get over the idea, and fast, that an American President or anyone else has the personal capacity to predictably set everything right, if only he'd use it properly. (Which means, "The way I want it.")

In a way, the problem was caused by a British Colonel in 1999, who refused to consider including any plan to install a clean-up administration in the wake of a peacemaking operation, along the lines of the civil administrators put into Europe in the wake of the liberating forces, ensuring all Nazis were purged from local administration.

By leaving enemies in a position where they could seek revenge (and many of the Baathist elite under Saddam have resurfaced in this gang), we have made a rod for our own backs. In WWII they were removed from circulation into prison camps for long enough, a couple of years, for society to reform without them, and for them to be about as much use as chocolate teapots thereafter. They got what was left, bottom of the heap, and although some had status they could eventually recover, it was far from sufficient to return to the bad old ways.

So once again, a Colonel Blimp sunk us. God rot Staff Colonels!

We occupied the country on 10 May 1940. The USA took over the occupation in 1941.

Many people felt the same way, but at worst all they did was   *contribute to* an imperfectly foreseen problem. Additional NATO failures were only further unfortunate contributions. No single condition or action is likely to determine the future.

Other things were happening i Iraq too, like rebuilding, that were contributing (though unsuccessfully) to far different outcomes. And still other things, like the continued American presence, were influencing in unquantifiable ways the potential of both good *and* bad outcomes.

Hindsight is rarely 20/20. It's more like tunnel vision.

The Sunni-Shia division has existed for many years, as Lighter notes.
In Iraq, the Shias are (were) dominant in an area in the east and south of Bagdad; a kinship with the Shias in Iran.

Sunnis were more numerous in the west part of the "country," with the predominantly Sunni Syria, Jordan and parts of Turkey.

Kurds were dominant in the northern area of Iraq and adjacent parts of Turkey and Syria.

I feel that these divisions should have been foreseen and taken into account in the divisions made following WW1, but as Lighter says, hindsight is imprecise, and actions by the alliance and American occupation only added to the problem.

In 2003, the invasion force consisted of the Americans, UK, Australia and Poland. Later, over 30 more nations became involved (Iceland sending two troops; number of Kurdish irregulars unknown).

Bush and Tony Blair maintained that the action was to "disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support of terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people" (quote cobbled together from several speeches by our peerless leaders).

It looks like the U. S. may continue to be involved in one way or another, but the other nations have wisely retreated from further participation.

So lets punish Iceland for sending those two soldiers, by invading and building winter resorts and casinos.

Well , Guest is right

Yes , I believe that there was an RAF base in Iceland in WW2
We occupied the country on 10 May 1940. The USA took over the occupation in 1941.

not long ago the US left Iceland the Airforce gave up his base in
Kelfavík Airport ,
now you want to take Iceland , well its either US , China or Russia ...
so you can guess what we want up here in the North Atlantic ..

Yes my home town in Vestmann Island went hard in 1973 when it erupted ,
and yes we have another volcano waiting to erupt , Hekla , Katla , Vatnajökull -Glacier ...there are about 5 volcano in the Glacier .

so take Iceland make a star in your flag , its either you or them ..

but future will only tell the truth ..

all the best Skarpi Iceland .
