Subject: Funding 'The Ballad of Shirley Collins'
From: Matthew Edwards

I thought I had seen a thread* already on Mudcat about the project to make a feature documentary about Shirley Collins, entitled The Ballad of Shirley Collins, based mainly on the collecting experiences detailed in her excellent book America Over the Water. The makers, Burning Bridges and Fifth Column Films, are looking to fund the project through an appeal on Kickstarter; they hope to raise £25,000 by 22 July 2014, and have so far received pledges for £10,733. It would be wonderful to realise this project, so it would be great if more people respond to the appeal. You can see a short video, and read a description of the project here:- The Ballad of Shirley Collins.

From what I read on the description of the project on the Kickstarter web page the proposed film will definitely credit Dolly's role in their hugely influential EMI Harvest albums Anthems in Eden, and Love, Death and the Lady. In their own words "the film will also reclaim Shirley and her sister's contribution to music for posterity."

Hello all - thanks Matthew for posting this! I'm involved in the Shirley Collins film project so I hope it's okay to jump in (as a Mudcat guest) to say that anything you're able to do to support it - whether that's pledging yourself, or helping us to spread the word in person or online - would be hugely appreciated.

We have until 22 July to raise at least £25k, otherwise we lose all the money pledged so far. We're at over £12k now, which is brilliant - but we still have a long way to go.

@bubblyrat, agreed, we are looking to give Dolly's work the credit it's due (and we have some special plans up our sleeves for that, as long as we can raise the money).

If you've got any questions, leave us a comment or a message on the Kickstarter page, or get in touch on social media (Facebook /Twitter)

There are a couple of reasons in there why the movie they are hoping to should be interesting, even to those - like me - who don't know much about Shirley Collins at the moment.

Hello all, not posted on here for a little while -

We've got 10 days left of our Kickstarter campaign to make a film about Shirley Collins, with Way of the Morris directors Rob Curry and Tim Plester.

Please have a look, share with friends and consider pledging if you're able! It's been wonderful to get the project to this point, and we're obviously really keen to try and bring it over the line.

http://tinyurl.com/ShirleyCollins

Pledges start at just £1;

- For £5, you'll get your name in the credits, and a signed thank-you letter from Shirley;
- For £15, you'll get an exclusive album featuring new Shirley covers by Will Oldham, Sharron Kraus, Alasdair Roberts, MV & EE and many others;
- For £30, you'll get an exclusive Kickstarter-only signed first edition of Shirley's forthcoming book, By The Lines On His Hand;

...and there are many other enticing alternatives also available!

We also have a London closing show for the campaign on Sunday 20 July, with TREMBLING BELLS, DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON, THE OWL SERVICE, and MRS PILGRIMM:

https://www.facebook.com/events/583481635104375

There are other closing shows in Sheffield, Northampton and perhaps a few others - visit the Facebook page for details!

Thanks for reading, as I say - please do share, if you can!!! - and very happy to discuss the project, answer questions etc, below!!!

Sorry the above is a bit 'pluggy', by the way - I hope no-one minds too much.

Has anyone else been involved in something like this? It's a new one form me, and a fair old learning curve!

Why leave it so late to raise it here? Why is there a deadline at all? Where else has it been publicised?

Fair questions, Richard -

On the issue of a time limit, all Kickstarter/most crowdfunding campaigns need to be given an end-date by which the money will be raised (and if you don't meet the target, you don't get the funds) - it's just the way it works. With the benefits of hindsight, a longer campaign may have been good (this one will have run for precisely a month), but unfortunately Kickstarter doesn't permit changes once a campaign has commenced.

As for why it hasn't been raised here - I was startled to find that it hadn't been. It's very regrettable, and if it's vexing for anyone then I and everyone else involved will sincerely apologise.

It has had quite a lot of coverage through specialist music channels (including fRoots, The Wire, etc) as well as through EFDSS, though in general mostly on-line/through social media. Vic has also steadfastly and generously supported the thing through his 'Shirley Collins Appreciation Society' Facebook group.

It appears that the problem for crowdfunding campaigns is that many news outlets don't quite consider them news. They BECOME news if they conclude successfully, but that's cold comfort to us...!

We're doing everything we can to try and secure further coverage in the final furlong... for anyone on here, if you like the idea in question, please do share with fellow travelers, your local folk clubs, etc. There are a couple of great exclusive pledges available for clubs and societies (if I do say so myself!)

I hope this seems coherent, but very happy to answer any further questions.

In general, what do you think of the idea? Any questions or comments about the approach posited by Rob and Tim, as directors?

Yes I'd read up on the previous thread link and thought I'd chip in.
A long way short yet though and it could take me more than a fortnight to think up yet another blessed password.

Thanks JHW. We're Hoping to follow the example of the Moondog documentary that closed last month - it looked to have a way to go, with a few days left. but ended successfully!

However, any and all assistance is needed and massively welcome...

What other channels would you have expected to have heard about a project like this through, but haven't yet?

Who should we be asking to help us get the word out this week?

Thanks again all!!!

Quite a big 24 hours for pledges (including one of £2,500!!!), so we now have about 8k left to raise in 8 days - it really feels like we're edging closer, but please do continue to spread the word if you're so inclined...!

I'm delighted to see that the initial target of £25,000 has been reached with four days to go. This means that the project will go ahead thanks to all the 547 backers who have pledged funding so far. Any extra funds will be used to make an even better film, so I look forward to seeing the results some time in the future. Best wishes to the film makers.

Matthew

Thanks again to everyone for helping to get us over the line! The Kickstarter closes on Tuesday, but I think we'll keep the pledge options available via a Paypal account or suchlike as it'd would be great to be able to raise further funds and to still give people access to some of the exclusive rewards as the project develops further.

In particular, we'd love to be able to take Shirley to the US to return to some of the locations visited with Alan Lomax.

In terms of the right now, we have a London campaign closing party this evening in Dalston with Trembling Bells, The Owl Service and David Thomas Broughton:

https://www.facebook.com/events/583481635104375/

...and one in Sheffield tomorrow with Sharron Kraus, The Big Eyes Family Players and Paul & Liz Davenport!

There's a link to this film on Genevieve Tudor's Facebook page. Click on the image.

https://en-gb.facebook.com/groups/genevieve.tudor/

For a limited time, according to Genevieve. It's 94 minutes long. Does not require a Facebook Account.

It says "You may not be able to watch this if you're not in the UK."
