Subject: Shirley Collins From: babypix Date: 30 Jun 04 - 12:46 PM A recent posting regarding folk-related shops in London made me wonder if Shirley Collins is to be found... Ideas? Yes, Gargoyle, it's STILL me! Best, Deborah Robins Nut Hill Productions, Inc. |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: babypix Date: 30 Jun 04 - 01:17 PM Not that she's "missing" per se, but rather whether or not she is "find-able" in order to be interviewed for a television program. Your assistance is appreciated. Kind regards, Deborah Robins Nut Hill Productions, Inc. "Where Have All The Folkies Gone?" |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: Dreadnought Date: 30 Jun 04 - 04:16 PM So come on they Babypix, - tell us about your TV show! |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 30 Jun 04 - 06:10 PM Shirley's just published a book called "America Across The Water" about her sojourn in the southern states collecting songs with Alan Lomax, which is listed on Amazon.co.uk (though they call it "America Over The Water" for some reason). It's published by SAF Publishing with the ISBN 0946719667, and they would surely be able to get a message to her if all else fails. I second Dread's request - what's this about a TV show? Which side of the pond will it go out on? |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: GUEST,vectis Date: 30 Jun 04 - 07:32 PM Shirley lives down here in Sussex (UK) and is still actively involved in the local folk scene as well as participating in national events. |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: babypix Date: 30 Jun 04 - 09:38 PM "Where Have All The Folkies Gone?" is an eight hour, four-part television series initially planned for American cable and educational television broadcast, but also for licensing through the BBC and direct to dvd, etc. We have been hard at work for over a year in preparation for telling what we plan as the definitive and historical story of American Vernacular Music. Of course we acknowledge all of the requisite Western European and African influences, but our focus for this production is truly on how American music beginning in the 1600s parallels the growth and development of our young country. For lack of a better description, this is a "Ken Burns-type" documentary series which will be Narrated by Peter Coyote and in association with some of the finest talents in contemporary television production. Our last year has been consumed with meeting and interviewing venerable performers, scholars, critics, and experts on-camera with: Pete Seeger, Peggy Seeger, John Cohen, Sam Hinton, Wavy Gravy (first Emcee at the original Gaslight Club), Phyllis Barney (Folk Alliance), Jonathan Talbot (aka Juan Moreno), Larry Hanks, Hamilton Camp, Bruce Langhorne, Maxine Sellers, Mason Williams, Marc Silber, Mrs. Burl Ives, Honeyboy Edwards, Spencer Moore, Anna Lomax Chairetakis (obo her father, Alan Lomax), Bess Lomax Hawes, Rich Warren (obo WFMT "The Midnight Special"), Howard & Roz Larman (LA Folkscene radio program), Guy Carawan, Len Chandler, Tom Paxton, Theodore Bikel, Rob Koppleman (obo Lee Hays book), Alex Hassilev (The Limeliters), John Braheny, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, John Stewart (Kingston Trio), Roy Rogers (John Lee Hooker's Producer), Will Holt, Raun MacKinnon, Sonny Ochs (obo Phil Ochs Estate), Ellen Hawes, Meridian Green (obo Bob Gibson Estate), Raphael Boguslav, Jean Ritchie, Oscar Brand, Gene & Francesca Raskin, Doug Yeager obo the estates of Ed McCurdy and Josh White, Odetta, Paul Colby (The Bitter End), Art D'Lugoff (The Village Gate) , Jac Holzman (Elektra Records Founder), and the members of Marley's Ghost including Ed Littlefield, Jr., Jon Wilcox, Dan Wheetman, and Mike Whelan. Other interviews in the works will include interviews with: T Bone Burnett, Van Dyke Parks, Utah Phillips, Marc Savoy, Carolyn Hester, Faith Petric, Ed Pearl, Barry Olivier(Berkeley Folk Festival), Gordon Bok, Harold Leventhal, Ronnie Gilbert, Christine Lavin, Michael Cooney, Michael Johnson, Mark Moss, Claudia Schmidt, Glenn Howard & the American Musical Heritage Archive, Joan Baez,Ani DiFranco, Irwin Silber, Barbara Dane, Bob Dylan, Bob Neuwirth, Fred Silber, George Pickow, Tracy Chapman, Judy Collins, Shirley Collins, Norah Jones, Nora Guthrie obo the Guthrie Estate, Peter Yarrow, Sandy & Caroline Paton, Keb Mo, Taj Mahal,Maria Muldaur, Rosalie Sorrels, and Jesse (Nicky)Cahn obo his dad, Rolf Cahn...and many more These interviews will be edited and placed in context with historical archival footage and stills, live on-tape segments, and animated graphical segments. It's gonna be a beautiful thing and a serious study and tribute to an important American genre we hold dear. As folkies ourselves, we feel a strong responsibility as "keepers of the flame", so to speak. We hope that members of this forum will continue to generate input for us, particularly in relation to information on elder performers, or those influential performers who may not have been commerically successful, yet important nonetheless. Thanks for letting us into your world. Warm regards, Deborah Robins Nut Hill Productions, Inc. |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 08 Jul 04 - 04:59 AM If you wish to cover the scene in the UK in the late 50's-early sixteis there are many more than Shirley that helped spread the word and many visitors from the US. The Ballads and Blues Club in London (one of the earliest)featured many eg; Peggy Seeger (already mentioned), Dean Gitter, Ralph Rinzler, Fred Gerlach, Sandy & Caroline Paton, Winston & Mary Jane Young, Rambling Jack and Derrol Adams, Alan Lomax, Guy Carawan etc etc etc. The number of british people singing US material was quite considerable and when Ewan decided suddenly that that was no longer kosher and went away and formed the Singer's Club. The Ballads & Blues continued in the vein of welcoming any performer that did a good job including such British performers doing American material as Cyril Davies, Long John Baldry, Red Sullivan, Lisa Turner, Malcom Price, Pete Stanley, Steve Benbow etc etc |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: GUEST,Hootenanny Date: 08 Jul 04 - 05:00 AM Sorry I got carried away but many of those performers made a great contribution in those days and tend to get overlooked. |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: GUEST,DMcF Date: 08 Jul 04 - 05:26 AM There was a thread here just a wee while back 'Can Shirley Collins sing?' (I believe). I took the trouble to write in (from home, logged on under my 'member-name - I'm at work here, hence 'guest') with an emphatic 'YES, she hits the spot for me!' But as I recall, she wrote in herself with summat like 'Of course I can you cheeky people!' So it seems she might occassionally read these hallowed pages - maybe she'll contact you direct. Hope you do establish contact - it'll be grand to see and hear one of my fave singers on the TV. - Duncan McFarlane |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins From: treewind Date: 08 Jul 04 - 02:18 PM Hmm, that's what I thought, for a moment, in that thread - then I remembered that anyone can post a message signed "GUEST, Shirley Collins" Anyway I've had nice emails from Shirley, Martyn (in France!) and Deborah thanking me for putting them in touch with each other so I know they are in communication... that's my good deed for this week.
