There are several websites devoted to the subject, and at least one book, Audie Murphy did it
backwards - war hero first - star later. The most conspicuous absence from uniform was John Wayne, perhaps he had good reason, I don't know.

Leslie Howard - RAF... lost in 1943

Charles Durning - US Army, Silver & Bronze Stars - European Theater

Eddie Albert US Army, Bronze Star - Pacific Theater

All noted for their modesty regarding their service... Audie Murdhy's book never discusses his medals... instead it goes into the life of a GI Joe and his own circumstances as poor, rural kid that went to war and faced the tragedy of combat.

arrgh!
Eddie Albert worked for the Army prior to the war then enlisted in the Navy.

The war office also had a number of Hollywood directors who often used their own color film to record the action... available on DVD and worth watching. Most "war" movies of the period used actual footage of bombing runs and other Defense materials.

Not sure if he's a celebrity but the late George McGovern, one of my favorite public figures, was a decorated bomber pilot in WWII.

Johnny Cash was drafted into the Air Force but served in Germany, post Korean War.

Gene Autry had a distinguished war record in the USAAF. I believe he flew transport planes over the Hump and insisted on wearing his cowboy boots.

Both Gene Autry and John Wayne were 35 when Pearl Harbor was bombed.

The Service only took people up to 34.

Both tried to get in. Autry was an experienced pilot and won his appeal.

John Wayne was rejected a second time due to hearing problems and a leg injury he had suffered playing football for USC.

After doing his missions, Gene Autry was one of the Service's top PR men in recruiting.

A lot of sports celebrities did military service, too. Even though I am not a sports fan, as a New Englander my mind immediately went to Ted Williams who served in various branches of the US military during World War II and the Korean War. (And while I think his decision to be cryogenically frozen is bizarre, that's not what this thread is about. Just thought I'd get that in before someone else decides to go there.)

Mohammad Ali refused to be drafted into military service during the Vietmam War, mainly because of his Muslim religious beliefs and position within his chruch/religion. He was charged, but eventually exonerated.

Fast 0-forward to todays Military actions in the Middle East.

"What is all the commotion about?
Nobody asks other boxers about their religion.
But now that I'm the champion,
I am the king, so it seems the world is all
Shook up about what I believe.
You call it the Black Muslims, I don't.
This is the name that has
Been given to us by the press.
The real name is Islam.
That means peace."
— Muhammad Ali, as quoted in Ali Rap, edited by George Lois

Somewhere in my mind, I recall Mohammed Ali saying "no Vietcong ever called me a nigger."

Back to our side of the pond. Most people who were celebrities when we were young were ex military, due to conscription and before that, the war. Most of the music hall people were involved in ENSA, (every night something awful) and most transferred from regiments. The Goons being a good example.

What Musket said.
Virtually every able bodied male and a good number of females had some form of war service when I was growing up in 50's & 60's Britain.

The United States has about 21.8 million military vetrans.

We have just under 1.5 million right now on active duty.

The population of the US, if you count legal and illegal residents, is about 340 million.

So no, not many people serve anymore.

At the peak of WWII, we had about 12 million in uniform.

From that Bastion of Truth Wikipedia:

During World War II, Walter Matthau served in the U.S. Army Air Forces with the Eighth Air Force in England as a B-24 Liberator radioman-gunner, in the same 453rd Bombardment Group as James Stewart. He was based at RAF Old Buckenham during this time. He reached the rank of staff sergeant.
