Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 27 Jun 15 - 10:15 AM Yes to what Megan L suggests, assuming she means 'thread title'...;-) Maybe, if you can't track down this particular artist :-( you could ask what similar artists mudcatters would suggest. Apart from these three examples at the moment we don't know what sort of / names of other music you enjoy or reject. My hunch is that the recordings are a few decades old and not many people in the whole world will know of him now. And I'll ask again, can you or have you gone back through your browser history PAGE BY PAGE round the time you think you downloaded these tracks? |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 27 Jun 15 - 11:15 AM I was niggled by the thought that it might be Watt Nicoll -- a Scottish singer and writer of (mainly) comic songs in the late 60s and 70s. I was never familiar enough with his repertoire to recognise these tracks posted here, but there is some material on Youtube. After a while he seemed to disappear from the scene, but I believe he went to the US and trained as a motivational speaker (and maybe even a hypnotist?), working there for many years. Within the past three or four years he reappeared in Britain with the focus on his consultancy work. I tried to look him up on Wikipedia but didn't get too far…. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,kenny Date: 27 Jun 15 - 12:16 PM Sorry Anne - fairly certain it's not Watt Nicoll, but a good suggestion. No Dundee enough ! He was known professionally as "The Man", and I believe at one point was brought in to motivate the Scottish football team at a World Cup. No' one of his most successful results, I think. The mystery continues.................. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 28 Jun 15 - 09:25 AM This is unbelieveable. I have searched all the places on my computer or history in my browser - nothing... Thank you for your help. I can only wait, nothing more. |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Kenny B Sans Kuki Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:52 AM If its 1970s sounds as if it could be Alex Campbell although cant find anything in his discography..... the Dakota nomads could be a red herring |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: Effsee Date: 29 Jun 15 - 11:09 AM That is NOT Alex Campbell! Sounds like fake Scot to me. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Kenny B sans kuki Date: 29 Jun 15 - 04:02 PM Ah Ha Oh well that certainly rules out Ewan McColl In the same age group could it be Archie Fisher, he has recorded with a plerothra of faces, places and styles , peut etre? Also could be the kind of song the Battllefield band would do ... they wer in the states around the 70s This the best I can do with the words so far. Corrections invited Looks like a updated /sanitised version of Matt McGinns "Heilan man" WHISKY DRINKIN' MAN If you are a tourist Or just passin thro You'll need eyes in the back o yer heid Tae see me comin thro He'll never gie in The whisky drinkin man Wi his bagpipes on his shoulder He serenades hi crew.... Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 29 Jun 15 - 04:47 PM And it's NOT Archie Fisher -- or Battlefield. The style is more punchy and vigorous, along the lines of Gaberlunzie (although they were a duo, rather than a solo turn). And the text is more direct/less subtle than anyone Scottish would expect from the two performers named. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Chris Wright Date: 30 Jun 15 - 01:08 AM Pretty sure it's the band that go by the name 'Longshot Nelson and the Disjoints', who seem to be a contemporary band, despite the retro sound. How did I figure it out? Answer: I spent fifteen seconds on Google looking for a band that does a lot of Matt McGinn covers... Here are a couple of their other tracks for comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI7dOwdRW84 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS1HygpvSnE And their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/longshotnelsonandthedisjoints |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Anne Neilson Date: 30 Jun 15 - 03:12 AM Chris, I think you've cracked it -- but I begin to wonder about the purpose of the original post…... |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Dave Date: 30 Jun 15 - 04:18 AM Thats a bit of a find. A mixture of covers, traditional, and his own stuff. Listen free then download for 50p per track. They are from Ayrshire, and maybe slightly bonkers. Flintcount has done us, and hopefully them, a favour. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: GUEST,Kenny B Sans Kuki Date: 30 Jun 15 - 07:22 AM Thanks Chris well googled Listened to the tracks ... could be ive written on their face book page to ask Slight thread drift I sometimes brainstorm w remotely possible answers in the hope that my good humoured team members will contradict me with the right answers and it has a roughly 60% success rate by triggering the reply "thats nonsense" its "xxxxx" from the hidden depths of their memories. |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish) From: FreddyHeadey Date: 30 Jun 15 - 10:55 AM I'm struggling to get my head round this. 'Creative Recluse' at nelsonschainsaws.tumblr.com/ says he is... "Also known as JB Nelson, Sleepy Eyes Nelson and Longshot Nelson." It would be interesting to know what his real name is. I wonder if anyone in Scotland has seen him performing? There are vids of him at the State Bar Glasgow & Jazz Bar Edinburgh(see his YT uploads page) 'Sleepy Eyes' Nelson seems to do American bluesey tracks www.facebook.com/sleepynelson 'Longshot' Nelson does Scottish tracks 'JB' Nelson does Gothic Americana,Dark Country,Alternative, Experimental stuff. and also lists The God Channel : Experimental - Noise - Industrial Sundowner : Synth Pop - Industrial - Dark Soundtrack He operates a small record label cheapwinerecords.bandcamp.com/ which lists other artists. I wonder how many are him too. I have asked btw. His YouTube page has an 'About' saying he is base in Scotland www.youtube.com/user/nelsonschainsaws/about & lots of uploads. Here are a few for comparison : Early, as an un-named band, with melodica The Stranger Longshot Nelson Matt McGinn Cover - The Rolling Hills O' The Borders - Sleepy Eyes Nelson i couldn't buy beer JB Nelson gunsmoke trail Sleepy Eyes Nelson & Slate Dump(who, to me, looks like it might be the guy in 'The Stranger' ?) Down The Line Blues - |

Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish)-found! From: Stanron Date: 01 Jul 15 - 01:01 PM So this whole thread has been a covert promo for a 'contemporary band' with it's own recording label. Am I wrong in thinking that legs have been pulled? |
Subject: RE: Searching for name of the artist (Scottish)-found! From: GUEST,flintcount Date: 03 Jul 15 - 02:48 AM And after 7 months... Finally. I don't know how to thank you all. I don't know what to say, because I'm completely stunned... You've done great job. That's interesting, because i've found him last night accidentaly and decided to write here about him. But when i saw that one day before you've found it too... It's just impossible. Thank you for help. Thank you for something, that i can't descript by words. It's one of the biggest treasures i have. Kind regards, Flintcount from Poland |
