Subject: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: Donuel Date: 29 Jun 15 - 10:21 AM Women live longer. Women who are post menopausal for five years can't be accused of hot flashes. Over half of all men over 50 will have fatiguing sleep disorders from getting up multiple times to pee due to ever growing prostates. Frequent urination during the day make men less available for duty than women. Men die earlier according to actuary figures. Women have more of their brain devoted to speech than men. In risk situations more women process the information as a problem solving mental exercise while men may process the information from their amygdala as an emotional risk / reward exercise. Women's sleep cycle is more dependable. Women who had children tend to live longer and have stronger immune systems. OSO |

I'm sure Hillary Clinton considered her basic health in that long process about whether to run again. If Ruth Bader Ginsberg is any indication, a woman in high places oughta do just fine. |

Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: DMcG Date: 30 Jun 15 - 01:17 AM I was surprised to learn around 10% of presidents die in office of national causes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: DMcG Date: 30 Jun 15 - 02:31 AM *Natural* causes. By a pure coincidence, around the same number were assassinated, which might be *national* causes, in some cases, I suppose... |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: Bill D Date: 30 Jun 15 - 10:00 AM 10% of 44 is only 4 +..... which is not exactly statistically significant since those who did were in or before 1945, and might have lasted longer with modern medicine. FDR was worn out, and Harding had pneumonia, among other things. |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: DMcG Date: 30 Jun 15 - 12:35 PM True, it is of low statistical significance given the sample size. I looked it up because I didn't know of any at all (though even as a Brit I should have remembered FDR) I did have a look at the UK as well. We've had six die in office of natural causes, rather than 4, over roughly the same time frame. It's not really comparable, though, because our prime ministers are not directly elected and, at least until recently, often became head of the party then stayed there a long time, in part because we have no limit on the number of terms. It is only since around the last twenty years or so that it has become the done thing for a party leader to resign if they don't win the election. |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: DMcG Date: 30 Jun 15 - 12:44 PM I should say, though, along with Joe that it would be a serious logical error to reason from a set of statistics to decide how an individual will turn out. Stats just don't work that way round. |

Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: Mr Red Date: 01 Jul 15 - 03:57 AM Then there was Thatcher. interestingly - I have read in the New Scientist and on radio documentaries that: sleeping less that the normal (for normal humans) 7½ / 8 hours per night brings with it a higher risk of Alzheimer's, later in life. 4 hours (reputedly) and those later years. Just saying. Scuse me while I take a power nap, I only got 7 hours last night. |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jul 15 - 06:48 AM Check out DMcG's very sound post on that score, Mr Red. |
Subject: RE: BS: Physically best prez , man or woman? From: Mr Red Date: 01 Jul 15 - 11:45 AM I checked out TED.com on why we need 7½ / 8 hours sleep a night. http://www.ted.com/talks/jeff_iliff_one_more_reason_to_get_a_good_night_s_sleep#%3C/A Apparently brain blood vessels are concentric tandem conduits. The physical act of sleeping dilates the outer vessel and lets cerebral fluid course down to the inner reaches which mops up the prions. This action gets less effective with age, hence the correlation (not a proven cause) with Alzheimers. FWIW Bill & Hillary would appear to have got more sleep that Bush, if the account of their first night at the White House is to be believed. Or the first morning, to be pedantic. So check the Presidential candidates' sleep preferences before voting. How much sleep did Reagan get? Just asking. |
