I'm using Windows 7. (Having seen Windows 8 on my husband's computer, I decided to give Windows 8 a miss.)

Now I'm receiving enticing notices about downloading Windows 10 for free. ("Hey, little girl, would you like to get some free software? There are games and apps, just for you...")

Naturally they don't tell me how to get rid of it if I don't like it.

Who has tried it?

Actually, they do tell you how to revert within the first month. There was a whole thread around the introduction. It's fine. I like it and transition went without a hitch (although YMMV).

If you check the 2 previous threads of the last few weeks,
you'll get a reasonably balanced view that Win 10 is in some aspects much better than Win 8.1,
but carries with it serious concerns regarding data privacy and enforced updates.

Also some of us fairly well experienced computer users encountered significant problems with the upgrade to win 10;
so reverted back to win 8.1.

Some might question just how and why win 10 is actually superior to win 7...???

I've just updated an old pc and it runs much faster. I haven't found anything that doesn't work properly but a few things are no longer where I expected to find them - they're all in one place! If I don't find anything wrong in the next few days I'm going to update my current pc.

Had difficulty getting the win7 to win10 upgrade to start, but once it did it completed without problems. I customised the settings during installation to mitigate the privacy issue as described on the web. Overall I was impressed with the upgrade procedure.

It starts up no quicker than win7 - despite MS claims. One program didn't work - Secunia PSI which I use to update non-MS software; I reverted to v2.

Some features vanished during the upgrade - eg hibernate, trackpoint icon - but I waa able to get them back after some googling. Backup looks good compared with win7's backup.

It's now running fine and I marginally prefer the user interface to win7. Finally it introduces virtual desktops! But little advantage over win7 IMO.

on my trusty old desk top i have retained word 7, and that's how its gonna stay. it works great. and has the old word, which works fine and costs nowt,

I'm generally satisfied with Windows 10, but not perfectly so. Of the 8 installations I've done, two had problems and I had to revert them to Windows 8.1 - both were low-powered Win 7 computers with lots of bloatware. And I still can't get Audacity to work on Win 10 because Audacity can't find where Win 10 hides the audio drivers. I'm expecting Audacity to come up with a "fix" any day now.

Fascinating - folks dancing to MicroSpawnOfSatanSoft's tune without having to do so, even tho its a royal pain in the arse.

Whatever happened to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

What can WIN 10 do for you that WIN 7 can't?

I have made the conversion on my Windows 7 computer. Several programs needed major tweaking and our browsers are still concussed, but the new OS is working adequately.

Pay close attention to the privacy settings during installation. Read every screen thoroughly.

What does Windows 10 do that Windows 7 can't? I assume that Microsoft will continue to support it a bit longer.

Uh-Huh. That's as may be - and a pretty tenuous assumption considering MicroSoft's history. I wouldn't count on it.

Greg, most of us have to use software that is shared by others, or produce work that others can use on their computers, so we are stuck with mass-market products such as Microsoft Word and PowrPoint. Despite our best efforts, we are not entirely in control of our means of production. There it is.

I bought my computer with Windows 7, just before Windows 8 came out; so I got a free upgrade to Windows 8 and then to 8.1, and now to Windows 10. I feel each new operating system has been an improvement, making things run a little more smoothly. My own computer is running very well on Windows 10, with the exception of the problems I've had running Audacity. I converted three 2-yr-old HP computers from Win 8.1 to Win 10, and they're doing well.

And luckily my boss's Win 7 computer is working well with Win 10. It's just two very underpowered computers that gave me fits. These two computers are used by our college interns, and they tend to download strange things onto their machines.

Still, I'm holding off on installing Win 10 on any more staff computers, until I'm sure things will go well.

I didn't really see the problem with Win 8.1 - it seemed to work fine and I'm not very techy. Nevertheless, I've upgraded two computers to Win 10 and they seems to work well too. I had a problem with the task bar on my ultrabook the other night - but, in the end, that turned out to be ludicrously easy to fix and left me feeling like a bit of a dork. The only real problem that I've encountered, so far, has been with getting my ultrabook to speak to my digital projector (it worked with Win 8.1). I'm sure that there's a work-round for that too but I'm giving a talk next week so will take my ancient, extremely heavy, steam-driven (Win Vista) Toshiba lap-top because I know that that works!

I haven't tried Cortana yet. I rode from North Carolina to DC last year with Amos and his lady friend Siri, and Siri kept leading us astray and Amos wouldn't let us pay attention to the highway signs. That was enough of those artificial women for me....

Cortana has not been activated where I live, which is fine. The transition to Windows 10, from 8.1 on my desktop and from 7 on a laptop, went without any problems. It boots up in two seconds and does everything I need it to do. if you're worried about privacy and Big Data following you in order to send you targeted advertising (and I do hate that with a vengeance), you will need to go through your privacy settings but that's really par for the course with most new software, Google, Facebook etc.
All in all, it's an operating system, like anything new, you take a week or two to get used to where everything is and after that, it works just fine. No big deal.

We have lots of computers - my husband's business used them to control communications for the emergency services.

Some have upgraded to W 10 first try, others, like the one I am using, will download and attempt to install, then fail.

As he is winding up the company at the end of this month there are lots of bits and pieces around which can be put together to make up a working PC.
It seems strange that this one, which is fairly new with W 8.1 and has several truly humungous disks which have swallowed the contents of several older PCs and barely show double figures of fullness, will not upgrade, but a cobbled together box of the best bits off the shelves at the end of the workshop - no bother.

Installed without any problems on my one-year-old Dell Win 8.1 laptop. Took a little longer to upgrade than I'd been led to expect, but everything is working fine. I took the 'custom' upgrade option so that I could turn off as much of the tracking stuff as possible, and it seems to have worked out OK.

Been running Win 10 for about four weeks now and I haven't found anything to complain about. Not really that much different to 8.1 if, like me, you're just a basic user of bog-standard software for email, spreadsheets, word-processing and web-surfing. The big benefit is that I no longer get constant, daily messages that I used to get with 8.1, telling me I have Windows Updates awaiting installation then, when I ran install and restarted, getting more messages telling me it couldn't complete the Updates and that all the changes were being undone.

Much ado about nothing, AFAIC, but then I keep it simple, I don't try to do clever-shit stuff, and I'm not a tinfoil-hatter.

I upgraded about a month ago from Win 8, and I haven't noticed much significant difference. Had to shut off my anti-evil program for it to install. I don't believe it told me I had to do that, so I had a problem at the start.

I think it might have something like "you may have to temporarily disable your security..." but it looked like it was installing. It wasn't -- I got the "hold on, were doing stuff" or whatever message for a LONG time. THAT was when a message about disabling security might have been helpful. It was long enough ago that I don't remember exact details, but the install was fairly painless.

just a brief recap of my longer rambling complaints on the previous thread...

I unboxed a brand new Lenovo E50 "Win 8.1 with Bing"
[budget price PC - it's full proper Win 8.1 - just preset at factory to Bing search engine to reduce manufacturers licence fee]

Installing the new PC went immediately to Win 10 upgrade download.

I custom installed to avoid as much unwanted crap as I could disable.

For the first day it seemed to be working fine,
then "Restart" began to fail intermittently during further system and driver updates.
Until it froze during an essential driver update, and "Restart" failed completely to ever work again.

After 3 wasted days trying to google a fix, I gave up and reverted to Win 8.1.....

But restart still failed to work;
so I had to resort to the Lenovo OneKey Recovery 'safety net'.

The PC now seems to work ok, except I can't now create a recovery drive because system components are missing...

It instructs me to use the Win 8.1 install Disc, which Lenovo obviously did not include.
So I downloaded the Win 8.1 recovery install to USB drive.

This however does not appear to provide a system repair option, only full new clean install...!!!???

So basically Win 10 effed up a brand new virgin unused PC...

I posted earlier, but my post is not here.

Joe Offer says that Win 10 does not work with Audacity. Shimrod says it doesn't work with his digital projector. (I can hear the DH cussing now.)

I worry that it won't work well with Noteworthy Composer and MIDI.

I don't care how many games it can play. I'm not impressed that a Microsoft platform can handle Microsoft products. I want it to handle the unusual, personal tasks (such as musical tasks) which I care about.

I don't believe I'll switch.

FWIW, I have no [problem whatsoever using Audacity or any other music related program. Windows 10 is unable to see the files pn the memorycards in Nikon cameras however and that's a major nuisance when I wnt to quickly whip one or two pics off the camera for immediate use. Nikon's ViewNX-i can do a (complete) file transfer from the camera, or I stick the card in a cardreader so I am not completely stuck.

leeneia,

Why do you have this obsession with MIDI not working?

Years ago you kept worrying about Microsoft no longer supporting it, but it did.

It still will. MIDI under Windows will last longer than you, or I.

Noteworthy Composer works very well with Windows 10. Every time a new operating system comes out, there's a period of adjustment when Microsoft and the software and hardware manufacturers have to tweak their drivers and such so things work together smoothly. Usually after about 6 months, it's smooth sailing.

I find the Windows 10 Start menu to be the best design they've had yet. I like the active tiles that give me news and weather and stocks. I didn't mind the dual-desktop setup of Windows 8.1, but this is far more to my liking. Everything seems very easy to get to.
I also like the new file manager, and find it much easier to use. Of course, much of the operating system is invisible to us users - but to me, that part also seems to work very well.

I know it's fashionable to rant about Microsoft, but I have to say that I generally like their products and I don't believe they're conspiring against me.

Like Joe, I generally like MS products.

What I'm waiting for, with bated breath, is the Surface Pro 4. I bought the first SP and thought that it was great ... except for the crap battery life. Eventually I acquired a SP 2 which has (slightly) better battery life. I was intrigued by the idea of docking these devices so that I could add a second monitor and USB peripherals when not carrying them around. Annoyingly, MS did not make their docking station available in the UK but I eventually managed to find a dock, made by Belkin, which does the trick. MS markets SPs as 'tablets that can replace your laptop' but when docked, and linked to a bigger monitor, wi-fi keyboard and mouse, they make excellent small-form desktop PCs.

I skipped buying a SP 3 (I got my SP 2 at a reduced price when the SP 3 first came out). But I will be very tempted by the SP 4 - which should have some very high specs. And, of course, it will also come pre-loaded with Win 10. Phew! Back to the thread topic!

Thank you, PFR and Joe. How nice to have somebody talk sense. (Ed, my concerns are founded in painful experience.)

The site PFR linked has this to say:

"Windows 10 is a free update for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Details on upgrading are available at the Microsoft site. Make sure your music apps and hardware are compatible before you update."

Please note that far-from-reassuring last sentence.

Fortunately I have Joe's word, based I hope on experience, that Noteworthy Composer and Windows 10 are compatible. Now, will it be compatible with my darling little Music Star MIDI controller? It's very old, but it fits on my desk.

Before you update, it makes sense to run the routine that checks if your PC is up to it. Attach any devices you want to include in the check, then run the routine.

I attached my external HDD and my BluRay drive and ran the check. It initially told me that my Nvidia card wasn't compatible but, when I ran it again a few weeks later, it checked out OK - presumably a new driver had been installed in Windows Updates - and I had no problems with the installation, or since.

If you're on 7, here's a link to the check routine download.

Thanks for trying, but that is to see if I can download Windows 7. I've been using Windows 7 for a long time.

I searched for the same thing for Windows 10, but I wound up on a hinky site. I'd like to find the routine you are suggesting, however.

Sorry, I searched for the check routine and that was what came up! I'm on my iPad, so didn't try hitting the button to see what happened!

Do you still have the 'Get Windows 10' app in your toolbar? If you have, the check system routine can be run from there (that's where I got it from, but it was before the release of Win 10, and I was advance-reserving a download/update.

If you don't have the app,my pu could try running the compatibility appraiser, following the instructions here.

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas other than to call MS Support and talk it over with someone there.

If you are receiving messages about the upgrade, I assume the upgrade app has been installed on your machine. Look for the Windows logo on the right of your taskbar. This app provides the routine for checking if your machine is compatible with Windows 10.

It's on the task bar, but not yet installed: downloaded yes, ready to install when I give it the go-ahead, which won't be for a while yet, but not yet installed.

I'm always afraid of pushing the wrong buttons. Learned that from my ex wife.

The App is installed. That's the first tstep but most importantly, before you start the process, the app will let you test the suitability of your system. That's all I said.

If there was any point to watching "The Guns of Navarone," it was to learn the lesson the German soldiers learned: Beware the grease-bearing lifts. But Windows 10 was free and I was suckered in. Now I have no sound, not from You Tube and not even from my own files on the desktop. It used to be a piece of cake to restore the sound: select hidden icons on the right side of the task bar and click on the speaker symbol. AS someone has observed Cortina doesn't know "task bar." Can anyone give me back my sound or my old version of Windows?

Shimrod, I have just been given a surface for Windows RT. RT? On the box, it states that in order to get it to work, you have to sign in and buy the service--Cloud only. A little research shows that it can be upgraded to 8.1 but not to 10. Seems like a piece of crap to me. Plus, it can only be used with apps from the Microsoft store.
