There is no best line from that bimbo's plagiarized spew. Same mental capacity as The Trumpshit - or worse, if that's possible.

I'm sure Ake, The Professor, and Mr. T loved it, tho.

Herman Melville notwithstanding.

Ake:
Thank you for the feedback. It was my effort to be humorous by wild over-exaggeration, that Melania would've lead with the most identifiable line in English literature. I was kinda hoping that others would pile onto the thread with more such lines and we could have some fun.
(sigh- not the brightest thread idea, my 'pologies)

I gather that the RNC was quite something. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair

I admit that I've been following the Republican National Convention quite closely this year - and I've found it fascinating. I watched Melania Trump's address, on Monday, 18 July, and I liked it - and I liked her. I thought her best line was "he's the guy." It was disarmingly human.

Then came the controversy on Tuesday morning, 19 July - the discovery that several lines from the speech were copied almost exactly from the First Lady Speech that Michelle Obama gave when her husband was nominated in 2008. The irony was delicious, and so were the desperate attempts from Republican staffers to deny the plagiarism, or to blame it on Hillary Clinton.

But then the explanation, on Wednesday, 20 July. Snopes.com (click) tells the story very well. Meredith McIver, who has worked as a Trump ghost writer since at least 2007, admitted that she wrote Melania's speech and mistakenly included words from the Michelle Obama speech. McIver explained that she had interviewed Melania by phone, and Melania had given her quotes that she admired. McIver confused the Obama quotes with quotes from Melania herself, and included them in the speech. McIver offered to resign, but the Trump campaign did not accept her resignation. In her letter of explanation, McIver says that Melania "has always liked Michelle Obama." I was very pleased to hear that somebody in the Trump machine shares my admiration for Michelle Obama.

So, I still like Melania - not that I had any impression of her at all before the convention. The speech was a very human thing, and the mistake was a very human thing.

Gee, it's the last day of the convention, and I was surprised that we didn't have threads on the convention. I woke from my pre-convention nap this afternoon, and was going to start a thread titled "Mysteries of the Republican Convention." Alas, I found two threads now, both on very limited aspects of the convention. So, do I start another thread? I dunno.

I guess I can say what I want to say in this thread. Although I liked Melania's speech, I found many of the speeches truly frightening. Most frightening of all was the one from Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a master at twisting the words and acts of Hillary Clinton. The guy sounded demented - and hateful.

Another scary speech came from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who seems to want Trump to make him Attorney General so he can indict Hillary Clinton in a kangaroo court - with all the convention delegates shouting, "Lock her up!" and "Guilty!"

Equally scary was the speech from the token Christian in the group, Dr. Ben Carson. The speech from Carson was so weird, then he immediately made it into Snopes.com. Carson really sounds like a nice person, but it's hard to believe that a neurosurgeon can sound so incredibly stupid.

Here's the memorable excerpt from Carson's speech:
Now, one of the things that I have learned about Hillary Clinton is that one of her heroes, her mentors, was Saul Alinsky. And her senior thesis was about Saul Alinsky. This was someone she greatly admired and that affected all of her philosophies subsequently. Now, interestingly enough, let me tell you something about Saul Alinsky.

He wrote a book called "Rules for Radicals." On the dedication page it acknowledges Lucifer, the original radical who gained his own kingdom. Now, think about that. This is a nation where our founding document, the Declaration of Independence, talks about certain inalienable rights that come from our creator, a nation where our Pledge of Allegiance says we are "One nation under God." This is a nation where every coin in our pockets and every bill in our wallet says, "In God We Trust." So are we willing to elect someone as president who has as their role model somebody who acknowledges Lucifer? Think about that.

Read the Snopes story - it's a good one. While it's true that Alinsky called Lucifer ""first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment," Alinsky doesn't express any admiration for Lucifer. So, it's true that Alinsky acknowledges Lucifer. So did Dante, who makes Lucifer a major character in his Inferno. Interestingly, Lucifer is not mentioned in the Bible, but that's another story.

I think Carson's purpose is to make the Christian right think that Hillary Clinton is allied with Lucifer, thereby making it important that Americans vote for Trump, despite his less-than-Christian attitudes toward immigrants and other moral issues, and his opposition to the Pope.

There's more weird stuff about Hillary and Alinsky here (click). Of course, about the worst thing he can say about Alinsky is that he was a "community organizer" - like Barack Obama was later. Oh, hey, did I mention that I'm working as a volunteer community organizer myself?

So, anyhow, there have been some fascinating Mysteries of the Republican Convention this year. One would write a book about it.

It's time for choir practice, but I can't leave without saying something about Wednesday night's speech from Ted Cruz. His speech was standard conservative doctrine. It was actually a very good speech, although I don't accept his doctrine. Cruz spoke in a gentlemanly manner about Trump, but he failed to endorse Trump - and the entire crowd booed him for that. This morning (Thursday), Cruz said he couldn't endorse Trump because Trump had insulted Cruz's wife and accused Cruz's father of participating in the JFK assassination.

Christie and others called Cruz "selfish" and worse for failing to honor his pledge to endorse the party nominee, but I have to say I have a grudging admiration for Cruz because of this. What Trump said about the Cruz family, absolved Cruz of any obligation to endorse Trump.

Cruz's speech was vetted by the Trump folks, so they knew exactly when to cue the "Boos!" and have Trump step into the VIP box. Very stage managed, I heard.

Cruz is a loon, but at least he's a political loon. Trump is - what? I keep waiting for him to step down because he's tired of this. And there's still time for that.

So, Trump's speech went 73 minutes, which may be a record. The thought occurred to me, could all of the speeches for the whole convention have been written by the same speechwriters? For the most part, it was the same message, over and over again, all week long.

WOW
I get to correct Joe Offer on the bible.
Lucifer is mentioned once in the bible. Not the fallen angel but the planet Venus - the light bearer.

On Melania
That poor woman was used by the Donald. She is a very private person who would have preferred to watch the convention at home in front of the TV. I found her quite charming.
Frankly, if he is elected, I believe she will be miserable in the spotlight. I expect #1 Daughter will function as First Lady.

Let all the poisons that lurk in the mud hatch out.

I think the Repugnicant Convention has taken the place of the Republicans. They have turned their version of politics to a hate-based system.

Young people should know that it wasn't always that way. Once there were arguments based on principles and differing opinions on shared facts and a common love of country that was understood to apply to both major parties.

Now the Republicans have retreated from that damn radical Charles Darwin and embraced a promoter with no principles. He is a BS artist, meaning that what he says is not related to truth, nor lies either, it is simply the argument that convinces whoever he wants to convince right now.

To defeat his ilk requires a shared relationship to reality, which the internet makes all to easy to shape-shift away.

Really depressing is the realization that many many people who represent themselves as established politicians or full of moral rectitude have embraced this slide from reality with such seeming ease:

Mike Pence pushes an imaginary and corrupt narrative

Finally, we who disagree with this fall from political grace have to be aware of embracing the dark side ourselves. There are aspects of the current

Don't know if I'd call myself a "Radical Democrat," Louie. I prefer to call myself a "radical moderate," and I'm proud of the fact that people can't predict my positions on things. Even Greg_F and Steve Shaw can't put words in my mouth with any degree of accuracy. I favor Medicare for All, or some sort of single-payer healthcare; and yet I'm not necessarily opposed to Wall Street.

I liked Hillary Clinton's response to the Republican Convention today:
Hillary Clinton said on Friday afternoon that she agreed with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who earned scorn from the Republican Party when he encouraged attendees of the Republican National Convention to vote their conscience in November while refusing to endorse nominee Donald Trump.

"Something has gone terribly wrong when someone says 'vote your conscience' and gets booed," Clinton said at a Tampa rally.

The presumptive Democratic nominee added: "I never thought I'd say these words, but Ted Cruz was right."

Clinton encouraged voters to do what Cruz advised and cast their ballot for president in accordance with their conscience.

Here's a video:I wish Hillary would take better care of her voice. She's been shouting too much during this campaign, and she doesn't need to do that. And shouting doesn't lead itself to rational discussion - and rational discussion is what Hillary does best.

Ivana Trump was married to The Donald 1977-1992. She seemed to be one woman who could keep Trump under control. And in her own right, she was almost as entertaining as The Donald.

Reality TV shows were made for people like those two. Hell, they could have been The Kardashians....

Louie Roy,
You grew up with FDR as President! Wallace should have gotten the nomination , not Truman. Remember the flak Ike got for playing too much golf?

This probably was the last GOP convention. 2 of the speakers did say this, either by Freudian slip or on purpose.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I imagine many stupid white unlikely voters sipping Red Stripe are as happy as pigs in fudge.

I was expecting to be lied to, insulted, filled with fear and assaulted by declarations of war. I was not disappointed.

The means by which America will be great again was made perfectly clear by Donald for Donald and of Donald until we perish from the face of the Earth.

The convention was a toss up between ineptitude or sabotage. To be fair I would call it sabotude.

At the end of Melanoma's speech what I saw was different than Ebbie.
A father would normally put has hand at the small of his daughter's back or give them a hug about the shoulders but Trump ,ugh, grabbed   Melonoma low on both hips with his stubby fingers grasping her butt.

Russia has incinerated 90% of their weaponized Small Pox Virus. It was to be used on the survivors of the first and second Nuke strikes.

Unfortunately, they began with 200 TONS of VIRUS !!

The sins of our fathers are great and mostly unknown.
My sin is that I know the what and where of many of their sins and have done nothing but merely talk about them

Hey, Joe Offer, remember those years some time ago, when Bill Clinton was elected -- and what condition HIS voice was in? He was hoarse forever almost. I remember people going on about acid reflux in his esophagus, do you remember that, as if he needed an organic excuse for his voice sounding like it was shot. So your observation about Mrs. Clinton brings back memories.

Here's a report from the Associated Press:
UK SINGERS, OTHERS COMPLAIN ABOUT TRUMP'S USE OF THEIR MUSIC
LONDON (AP) (July 22, 2016)-- The estate of former Beatle George Harrison is complaining about the use of his music at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Harrison's family tweeted Friday that the use of the song "Here Comes the Sun" during the introduction of candidate Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka was not authorized and was "offensive and against the wishes of the George Harrison estate."

Rocker Paul Rodgers also complained about the use of his "All Right Now" at the climax of Trump's speech.

Earlier in the convention, Queen guitarist Brian May and the band Queen complained about the use of the band's 1977 hit "We Are the Champions" during a Trump convention appearance.

A newspaper in the Italian town where Luciano Pavarotti lived says the late tenor's loved ones were also unhappy that the Trump campaign played one of his signature arias, "Nessun Dorma." The Gazzetta di Modena on Thursday quoted Pavarotti's widow, Nicoletta Mantovani Pavarotti, and other family members as saying in a statement that the "values of brotherhood and solidarity" that Pavarotti expressed in his career "are incompatible with the world vision proposed" by Trump.

During the U.S. primary season, both the Rolling Stones and Adele complained that the Trump campaign was using their songs without permission

In my local newspaper (Sacramento Bee), a different version of the same article said that "Trump's Campaign and the Republican Party say they have paid license fees to use the songs."

So, I'm wondering what's the truth here. Do the artists or their estates have the right to control how the recordings are used, or must they allow use to anyone who pays a licensing fee?
